A quick heads-up before Monday morning: Hopkins Road will be closed in both directions between Tyler Boulevard and Twinbrook Road from Sunday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 7.

You may not travel that stretch of Hopkins every week, but I do—so I figured a reminder might save someone from heading several minutes out of the way before the coffee has fully kicked in. 😄

Crews will replace a 16-inch water line and repair roadway damage caused by a water main break last winter.

Drivers who normally use Hopkins Road should choose another route and allow a little extra time. No official detour was included in the closure notice, so this may be one of those weeks when your preferred side street suddenly becomes everyone else’s preferred side street, too.

The schedule is weather-dependent and could change if conditions delay the work.

Watch for temporary traffic signs near the construction area and check for updates before traveling through that part of town.

Hopefully, this reminder reaches you before the “Why is everyone turning around?” stage of your morning commute.

Lake County property owners have until this Wednesday, August 5, to pay second-half 2025 real-property taxes without penalty.

The extended deadline also applies to 2026 manufactured-home taxes. Payments made by mail must carry a U.S. Postal Service postmark by Wednesday.

The Lake County Treasurer’s Office warns that a 10% penalty may be charged on unpaid taxes after the deadline. Residents who still need to pay can use the county’s online payment portal, mail their payment or visit the Treasurer’s Office in Painesville.

Mentor City Council declared Aug. 1, 2026, “Israel Fox Day” in recognition of a Revolutionary War veteran who later became part of the Mentor community.

According to historical information provided by the City of Mentor, Fox was born in Glastonbury, Connecticut, in 1755 and completed four enlistments during the Revolutionary War.

His service included three-month enlistments in 1776, 1777 and 1779, followed by a six-month enlistment in 1780. Fox was associated with the 19th Connecticut Regiment, commonly known as Wolcott’s Regiment, which participated in the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Long Island.

The city also reports that Fox witnessed the Oct. 2, 1780, execution of British Major John André in Tappan, New York. André had been captured while assisting Benedict Arnold’s attempt to surrender West Point to the British.

By 1832, Fox was listed as a Mentor resident and had secured a military pension. The exact date and circumstances of his death are not known.

Fox was first buried in Mentor Pioneer Cemetery and was later interred at Mentor Municipal Cemetery. His grave is recorded as 63-13-3.

The recognition is part of Mentor’s America250 observance honoring Revolutionary War veterans who settled in the city or were buried here.

Gavin Williams delivered one of his best starts of the season Sunday, allowing just one hit over 5 2/3 innings as the Cleveland Guardians shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-0, at Progressive Field.

The win helped Cleveland avoid a weekend sweep and gave the Guardians a strong finish before opening a new series against the New York Mets.

Williams retired the first 15 batters he faced before Tim Tawa singled to begin the sixth inning. He struck out 10 and walked one, extending his streak of double-digit strikeout games to five straight starts.

That run puts Williams in rare company. He joined Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw as the only pitchers in Major League Baseball history to record at least 10 strikeouts with one walk or fewer in five consecutive games. It is also Cleveland’s longest such streak since Shane Bieber reached six across the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Rookie Chase DeLauter led the offense with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth inning. Patrick Bailey opened the scoring with a second-inning home run, and Kyle Manzardo added an RBI single.

The game included a 94-minute rain delay and a brief benches-clearing exchange, but no physical confrontation followed.

Cleveland’s bullpen finished the two-hit shutout after Arizona loaded the bases in both the sixth and ninth innings.

The Guardians are off Monday before hosting the Mets on Tuesday, with Joey Cantillo scheduled to start.

The Lake County Captains returned to .500 Sunday with a 1-0 victory over the South Bend Cubs in a rain-shortened seven-inning game.

Starting pitcher Jacob Zibin led the way with six scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit and three walks while striking out two, improving his record to 3-2 with a 3.74 ERA.

Cam Schuelke took over in the seventh and protected the one-run lead to earn the save. South Bend put the potential tying run at second base with no outs, but Schuelke retired the next three batters to finish the shutout.

Lake County improved to 17-17 and remains firmly in a crowded Midwest League East Division race. The Captains are two games out of first place, with five teams separated by only three games.

That makes the upcoming road trip especially important. After an off day Monday, Lake County will begin a six-game series Tuesday against the Lansing Lugnuts, who enter at 13-22 and sit at the bottom of the division.

The series gives the Captains a chance to move above .500 and gain ground while the East standings remain tightly packed.
