Lake County experienced another small earthquake Saturday evening, continuing a run of minor seismic activity in the eastern part of the county this year.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 1.9 earthquake at about 6:12 p.m., with its epicenter roughly 1¼ miles northwest of Perry. The quake occurred at a depth of about 10½ kilometers.

No damage was reported.

At least one person about 20 kilometers from the epicenter reported feeling weak shaking through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system. The response was classified as Intensity II, a level associated with weak shaking that may be noticed by some people but does not cause damage.

Saturday’s tremor was reported as the sixth earthquake in Lake County this year, following several other small earthquakes around Madison and eastern Lake County.

Minor earthquakes are not unusual in this part of Northeast Ohio. The region has experienced stronger earthquakes in the past, including a magnitude 5.0 event in 1986.

Residents who noticed shaking Saturday evening can submit a “Did You Feel It?” report to the USGS, which uses those observations to help determine where an earthquake was felt and how strongly.

Lake County seniors are being warned not to trust an online video claiming Congress created a new property tax relief program for older homeowners.

According to The News-Herald, the YouTube video tells seniors to contact their county auditor and request a “Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request” form that it claims is required by federal law.

Lake County Auditor Chris Galloway says no such form or federal law exists.

Galloway told The News-Herald that his office has received calls, emails and in-person visits from seniors looking for the nonexistent form. He said county auditors elsewhere in Ohio have received similar questions.

The video uses artificial intelligence to deliver misleading commentary in a way that can make the false claims appear credible.

Galloway urged residents to be cautious of online content promising major tax savings, government payments or debt elimination, particularly when it does not point to official government documentation.

Legitimate property tax relief is available in Ohio. The Homestead Exemption is available to qualifying homeowners, including certain residents age 65 or older, permanently and totally disabled homeowners, qualifying disabled veterans and certain surviving spouses.

Ohio House Bill 479 also authorized a one-time, state-funded property tax reduction for Homestead Exemption recipients, with the credit scheduled to appear on January 2027 property tax statements.

The 171st Lake County Fair wrapped up its six-day run with 106,012 visitors, as several events set new records during this year’s fair in Painesville Township.

According to the Lake County Board of Commissioners, one of the biggest records came from the annual 4-H Livestock Auction, which generated $606,000 across more than 340 lots — up significantly from $430,000 in 2025.

The fair’s opening-night bake sale also reached a new high, bringing in $8,491, while a record 236 riders competed in the fair’s motocross event.

Harness racing drew a strong field as well, with 98 horses competing across 17 races on opening day.

County officials credited favorable weather along with the work of volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors and supporters for another strong year at the fair.

With more than 106,000 people through the gates and several new records in the books, the 2026 Lake County Fair provided plenty of evidence that the longtime local tradition remains a major summertime draw.

Then imagine the compromise on an ordinary Tuesday. Carry in groceries. Put away coats. Make dinner. Do laundry. Work from home. Think about what happens when something needs repair.

Character is not the same as inconvenience, and efficiency is not the same as soullessness.

Sometimes an imperfection is simply a problem.

Sometimes it is evidence that a home was shaped by the people who came before—and the very thing that makes it feel irreplaceable.

The Guardians’ August slide continued Sunday with a 5-3 loss to the White Sox, leaving Cleveland four games out of first place in the AL Central.

Cleveland led 2-1 when rain stopped play after the first inning for 2 hours, 23 minutes. Both starting pitchers were removed after the delay, and Chicago took advantage of the Guardians’ bullpen in the third.

Randal Grichuk tied the game with an RBI double before Colson Montgomery hit a three-run homer off Craig Yoho, turning Cleveland’s early lead into a 5-2 deficit.

The Guardians had a chance to answer after loading the bases in the third against Hagen Smith, who was making his major league debut, but Brayan Rocchio lined out to end the inning.

Steven Kwan had two hits and extended his on-base streak to 25 games, tied for the longest active streak in the majors. José Ramírez added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Cleveland is now 58-61 and has lost five of its last six. The Guardians trail first-place Chicago by four games as the division race begins to tighten.

After an off day Monday, Cleveland opens a series Tuesday in Detroit with Tanner Bibee scheduled to face Drew Anderson.

The Lake County Captains salvaged the finale of a difficult road series Sunday, scoring three runs in the 10th inning to beat the Lansing Lugnuts 11-9 and avoid a six-game sweep.

Lake County struck first when Jace LaViolette hit a two-run homer in the opening inning. Lansing answered with four runs in the second against Guardians pitcher Ben Lively, who was making his third rehab start. Lively allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over three innings while striking out two.

The Captains' offense responded with plenty of power. Welbyn Francisca and Jeffrey Mercedes each homered twice, while Anthony Martinez and Luis De La Cruz helped Lake County build an 8-4 lead.

Will McCausland kept the Captains in control with five strong relief innings, allowing two runs on four hits without a walk.

Lansing tied the game with two runs in the ninth, but Lake County answered immediately in the 10th. Jonah Advincula doubled home the go-ahead run before Mercedes launched a two-run homer for an 11-8 lead. Logan McGuire closed it out for his fourth save.

The Captains improved to 18-22 in the second half, five games out of first and tied with Dayton for fourth place. After Monday's off day, those same Dragons come to Eastlake for a six-game series beginning Tuesday.
