Mentor CityFest gets underway Friday, Aug. 14, giving residents an easy way to start the weekend with live music, food, family activities and entertainment at Civic Center Park.

The festival runs 5–11 p.m. Friday at 8600 Munson Road, with free admission and free parking. According to the City of Mentor, bounce houses and some activities require a wristband, but there is no charge simply to enter CityFest.

Opening-night activities begin at 5 p.m. with food vendors, giant inflatables and games, Kids Tent carnival games and the Main Street Tent, where local businesses and nonprofit organizations will be on hand. Those areas remain open until 10 p.m.

Families will have three chances to catch the Cincinnati Circus Thrill Show, with performances scheduled from 5–6 p.m., 7–8 p.m. and 9–10 p.m. Fest Money Trivia also runs from 7–8 p.m. around the festival grounds.

At the Civic Amphitheater, Diana Chittester performs from 6:30–7:30 p.m., followed by Friday’s headliner, Just Like Pink, a P!NK tribute, from 8–10 p.m. The concert is also listed on the official Mentor Rocks schedule.

For residents who want the CityFest experience without committing an entire day, Friday is a good fit: arrive for dinner, let the kids enjoy the activities, catch some live entertainment and finish the evening with the concert.

One of CitiFest’s biggest family attractions this year will be the Cincinnati Circus Thrill Show, with six approximately one-hour performances scheduled in the Civic Center parking lot Friday and Saturday.

This is not a traditional animal circus. The Cincinnati Circus describes its stunt production as a fast-moving mix of athletic skill, suspense, comedy and audience participation.

Depending on the performance, the show may feature aerial performers, dramatic chair-stacking and balancing acts, fire performances and the company’s signature Wheel of Death, a large rotating apparatus on which performers balance, run and perform stunts.

The City of Mentor has not published the exact act-by-act lineup for CitiFest, so families should expect the specific combination of stunts to vary.

Showtimes are:

Friday, Aug. 14: 5–6 p.m., 7–8 p.m. and 9–10 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 15: 2–3 p.m., 4–5 p.m. and 6–7 p.m.

CitiFest admission and parking are free. Some separate inflatables and activities require a purchased wristband.

Mentor CityFest gets a P!NK-sized soundtrack Friday night when Just Like P!NK takes the Civic Amphitheater stage for a free concert from 8–10 p.m.

The Dallas-based six-piece touring band is led by singer, dancer and silk-aerialist Julia and builds its show around P!NK favorites including “So What,” “Just Like a Pill,” “Raise Your Glass,” “Try,” “Who Knew” and “Just Give Me a Reason.” The group’s live show combines a full band with the high-energy performance style and aerial elements associated with P!NK’s concerts.

There’s plenty happening before the headliner. CityFest opens Friday at 5 p.m., with food vendors, giant inflatables, games and other activities continuing through the evening. Diana Chittester performs from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at the amphitheater, followed by Just Like P!NK at 8.

Admission and festival parking are free. CityFest is held at Mentor Civic Center Park, 8600 Munson Road, with parking available at Mentor High School, Mentor Senior Center, Mentor Fire Station #5, Mentor Police Department and the Laketran lot on Market Street. Some attractions, including bounce houses and certain activities, require a purchased wristband.

The Guardians put the ball in play all afternoon Thursday. The problem was almost none of it turned into offense.

Cleveland managed just four hits in a 3-0 loss to Detroit, dropping the three-game series to the Tigers despite Detroit’s pitching staff failing to record a single strikeout. It was the first MLB shutout without a strikeout since 2014.

Keider Montero held Cleveland scoreless for 6 1/3 innings, allowing three singles and one walk. Rookie Chase DeLauter collected two of those hits, but the Guardians never found the big swing they needed. Steven Kwan went 0-for-4, ending his career-high 27-game on-base streak.

Parker Messick gave Cleveland a chance, allowing two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out six. Detroit scored on Dillon Dingler’s third-inning groundout and Eduardo Valencia’s solo homer before adding an insurance run in the eighth.

The loss leaves Cleveland at 59-63 and fourth in the AL Central, four games behind first-place Chicago. More importantly for the playoff picture, the Guardians remain just 1½ games out of an American League Wild Card spot despite going 3-7 over their last 10 games.

Cleveland returns home Friday to open a three-game series against San Diego, with Gavin Williams scheduled to face Michael King.

The Lake County Captains salvaged a split of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Dayton Dragons, falling 3-1 in the opener before Riley Nelson delivered a walk-off single for a 4-3 win in Game 2.

Lake County managed just three hits in the opener. Luis De La Cruz drove in the Captains’ only run with a ground-rule double, while starter Jackson Humphries allowed three runs over 4.2 innings. Zane Petty followed with 2.1 scoreless innings and four strikeouts in his High-A debut.

The Captains’ offense came alive early in Game 2. Jeffrey Mercedes launched a two-run homer in the first inning, and De La Cruz broke a 2-2 tie with his first High-A home run in the third.

Dayton tied the game again in the sixth, but Lake County answered in the seventh. Tommy Hawke and De La Cruz opened the inning with singles before Nelson drove home Hawke for the Captains’ fifth walk-off win of the season.

Lake County is now 21-23 in the second half and 5.5 games behind first-place Great Lakes as the race for a Midwest League East playoff berth continues.

The Captains host Dayton again tonight at 7 p.m. at Classic Auto Group Park for Stand Up to Cancer Night, followed by Fireworks Friday.
