One Death, Higher Taxes

Here's the math most couples never see coming.

When one spouse passes, the survivor usually keeps most of the household income — but starts filing as a single taxpayer. Same IRA. Same required distributions. Roughly half the standard deduction, and tax brackets that compress to nearly twice the rate at the same income.

It's called the survivor's tax trap, and it's one of the most preventable problems in retirement — if you act while both spouses are alive and rates are still low.

Craig Wear, CFP®, has walked 3,000+ families with $1M+ in IRAs through exactly this planning. His new book, Roth Conversion Reset, lays out the year-by-year framework for converting at today's rates so the tax problem never lands on the person you love most.

📰 Mentor Council Tables Fab 5 Fields Plan Amid Industrial-Space Concerns

Mentor City Council has tabled the proposed Fab 5 Fields indoor sports complex after an Aug. 18 hearing raised concerns about traffic, parking and a larger issue many residents may not realize the city is facing: a limited supply of available industrial space.

Fab 5 Fields wants to convert a roughly 41,000-square-foot manufacturing building at 7420 Clover Avenue into an indoor athletic facility offering soccer, flag football, lacrosse, softball, court sports and youth events.

The Planning Commission conditionally approved the proposal July 1. Council, however, heard arguments that this particular building should remain available for manufacturing.

Mentor has about 14 million square feet of industrial space — roughly 36% of Lake County’s total. According to the city’s second-quarter market report, just 4% of Mentor’s industrial space was vacant.

The concern isn’t simply that Fab 5 Fields would occupy an industrial building. City officials said recreational uses have previously been allowed in older or smaller industrial properties. They view 7420 Clover differently because it is a relatively modern building still considered suitable for manufacturing.

Parking and traffic added another layer. The property currently has 80 parking spaces, compared with 205 required for the proposed use, and the city engineer raised concerns about heavier peak traffic on the narrow section of Clover Avenue.

Fab 5 Fields remains pending. Council’s next regular meetings are Sept. 1 and Sept. 15, but the Aug. 18 record did not specify when the proposal will return.

🦟 Mosquito Treatment Scheduled Tuesday in Southern Mentor

The Lake County General Health District has mosquito treatment scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the southern portion of Mentor, according to the treatment schedule updated Aug. 21.

The scheduled treatment includes Mentor zones 3A and 3B and is weather permitting.

LCGHD conducts mosquito treatment in densely populated areas of Lake County to help reduce mosquito populations and the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Residents should know, however, that a scheduled treatment is not a guarantee that spraying will take place that day.

LCGHD says treatment may be delayed or canceled because of low mosquito counts, winds above 15 mph, a 50% or greater chance of rain, temperatures below 55 degrees, mechanical problems or conditions associated with an Air Quality Advisory.

Because the schedule can change daily, residents should confirm the latest information directly with the Lake County General Health District rather than relying on an earlier posted schedule.

The district's 24-hour Mosquito Treatment Schedule Hotline is (440) 350-2088 or (440) 918-2088. Residents can also check the latest schedule on the LCGHD Mosquito Control page.

👉🏻 Want to know why treatment dates can change, how areas are selected and the best way to check your neighborhood before spraying begins? We break it down on the Mentor Local Buzz website.

🛣️ SUNDAY DRIVES: Detroit + Belle Isle: A City Escape With Room to Breathe

Spend the first half of the trip inside Detroit’s neighborhood energy, food and street life—then cross onto Belle Isle for water, green space and a completely different pace.

Detroit works best for a Sunday drive when you stop trying to “do Detroit” and choose one part of the city to experience well.

For this trip, make Eastern Market the energetic first half. The district brings together food, murals, old market sheds, brick buildings and the feeling of a neighborhood in motion. On Saturdays, the year-round market runs from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it an easy anchor for a weekend visit.

Walk before you rush. Browse the sheds, look up at the architecture, notice the murals and choose lunch because something looks good—not because the clock says it is time to move on.

Then change the mood completely.

Belle Isle sits in the Detroit River, but the shift feels larger than the drive suggests. City blocks give way to water, lawns, tree-lined roads and long views across the river. Pick one or two stops that genuinely interest you, then leave room for the part that cannot be scheduled: a shoreline walk, a quiet bench, the skyline at a distance.

That contrast is the reason this trip works. Detroit supplies the energy. Belle Isle gives you the exhale.

For a one-day trip, start early and keep the plan narrow: Eastern Market, lunch, then Belle Isle. For a weekend, give the city more breathing room on Saturday and save the island for a slower Sunday.

Drivers should know that a Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Belle Isle, and busy warm-weather periods can occasionally limit inbound traffic. Arriving early makes the day easier.

This trip especially suits couples, friends, photographers and travelers who enjoy city life but do not want an entire getaway built around reservations and checklists.

You do not need to see all of Detroit.

You need enough of it to feel the city—then enough space to let the day soften.

👉🏻 There’s much more to making this pairing work than choosing two stops—see our full Detroit and Belle Isle guide for the best way to pace the day, what to prioritize, what to skip and how to turn it into an even better weekend escape.

⚾ Guardians Win Third Straight, Pull Even for Final AL Wild Card Spot

The Guardians are back in the thick of the American League playoff race.

Cleveland beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 Saturday night in Denver, extending its winning streak to three games and moving into a tie with Texas for the final AL wild-card spot after the Rangers lost to the Angels.

Jo Adell delivered the biggest swing, following a José Ramírez single with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. It was Adell’s 20th home run of the season.

Ramírez’s hit was the 1,752nd of his career, moving him into fifth place on the franchise’s all-time list.

Tanner Bibee gave Cleveland six solid innings, recorded his 16th quality start and earned his first win since July 20. Patrick Bailey added a two-out RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-2.

Colorado pulled within one on Connor Norby’s ninth-inning homer, but Cade Smith retired the next three hitters for his 33rd save.

Cleveland will try to complete the series Sunday with Foster Griffin scheduled to face Tomoyuki Sugano.

⚾ Captains Keep Playoff Push Alive With Win

The Lake County Captains are making things interesting in the Midwest League East race.

Lake County defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-1 Saturday, riding six scoreless innings from Jacob Zibin and a five-run sixth inning to move to 26-25 in the second half. The Captains have now won seven of their last 10 and sit four games behind first-place West Michigan.

Zibin delivered exactly what Lake County needed. The right-hander improved to 4-2 with a 2.66 ERA after allowing just two hits, walking none and striking out seven over six innings.

Tyler Howard gave the Captains a 1-0 lead with his third home run of the season in the fifth. He struck again during the decisive sixth, lining a two-run single that scored Welbyn Francisca and Anthony Martinez.

Jose Pirela then broke the game open with a three-run homer to right, giving Lake County a 6-0 advantage.

The bullpen took it from there, with Wisconsin's only run coming on an Eric Bitonti sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Lake County has already secured the series victory and will go for another win Sunday at 2:10 p.m. Eastern.

👉🏻 With the Captains gaining momentum and no remaining head-to-head games against West Michigan, the playoff chase now becomes a numbers game. We break down what Lake County can control, what needs to happen ahead of them, and why every remaining game carries a little more weight.
