Mentor is seeking bids for another paving package as several unrelated street and bridge projects continue or move through planning.

The proposed 2026 Mentor Facilities Paving project carries an estimated construction cost of $990,000. Bid documents identify work at Mentor Cemetery, Garfield Park, Dogwood Lane and the intersection of Mentor Avenue and State Route 306.

Plans include resurfacing eight existing cemetery road sections and building five new sections. The package also includes work on Garfield Park’s lower parking lots, an isolated Dogwood Lane repair and targeted pavement and drainage repairs near Mentor Avenue and SR 306. Some Garfield Park improvements are optional and may not be awarded.

Bids are due September 4. The contract documents list November 13 as the completion deadline, but no contractor or construction start date has been announced.

This is separate from the larger Mentor Avenue resurfacing project that began August 24.

A girls sports movement that started small in Mentor has reached a major statewide milestone.

Girls flag football is now the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s 29th fully recognized sport, with its first sanctioned season coming during the 2026–27 school year.

The Mentor connection goes back to 2020. News 5 Cleveland reports that Bob and Gennine Berwald helped start the local effort after Bob, a longtime Mentor teacher and coach involved with Northeast Ohio Flag Football, approached the Cleveland Browns about developing girls high school flag football.

At first, only two girls had signed up — the Berwalds’ daughters.

That changed quickly. According to News 5, the program grew to six recreational teams by spring 2021 and helped lay the groundwork for high school competition in Northeast Ohio.

The sport has since expanded dramatically. OHSAA says 162 girls flag football teams competed across Ohio this past spring, up from 20 schools with teams three years earlier. The association formally approved the sport in June after a unanimous board vote.

For Mentor, the milestone gives a local story statewide significance: an effort that began with two girls now sits at the roots of a new varsity opportunity for athletes across Ohio.

Lake County commissioners have made two different decisions on property-tax relief — and the distinction matters for homeowners.

Commissioners unanimously renewed the county’s additional homestead exemption for qualifying seniors and permanently and totally disabled homeowners. Lake County says the added exemption roughly doubles the average homestead benefit, from about $500 to about $1,000 a year.

But commissioners did not renew a separate Lake County owner-occupancy tax break that had provided an additional reduction for homeowners living in their primary residence.

Here’s the important part: Lake County homeowners are not losing Ohio’s regular owner-occupancy credit. That state credit remains in place and is actually being increased under changes to Ohio law.

However, homeowners who received both the Ohio credit and Lake County’s additional owner-occupancy reduction last year will no longer receive the county portion for tax year 2026. Depending on the property and other tax changes, that could mean less total relief than they otherwise would have received.

The change applies to the 2026 tax year, which for real estate generally means it will first be reflected on property-tax bills paid in 2027.

The county’s decision also affects schools and other local governments that receive property-tax revenue — one reason the issue drew significant debate before the vote.

The Guardians keep finding ways to win.

Cleveland erased an early five-run deficit Tuesday night and beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-6 in 10 innings, extending its winning streak to six games.

José Ramírez led the comeback with five RBIs and three doubles. His biggest swing came in the 10th, when he drove a two-run double into left-center to break a 6-6 tie and put Cleveland ahead for good.

Steven Kwan was just as important, finishing with five singles in his second career five-hit game. He also scored the tying run in the eighth after reaching on a single and coming home on another Ramírez double.

The Guardians needed the comeback after starter Gavin Williams allowed five runs in just 1 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. Cleveland trailed 5-0 in the second before steadily cutting into the deficit and eventually tying the game in the fifth.

A key defensive play helped keep the comeback alive. In the eighth, Angel Martínez made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Mike Trout of a potential two-run homer and preserve a 6-6 tie.

Erik Sabrowski struck out the side in the ninth, and Cade Smith escaped a second-and-third jam in the 10th to earn his 35th save.

Cleveland will try to keep the momentum going in Wednesday’s series finale, with Joey Cantillo scheduled to face Grayson Rodriguez.

The Lake County Captains survived one of their wildest games of the season Tuesday night, rallying for three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 19-18.

Lake County jumped out to a 9-0 lead and later held a 16-9 advantage, but neither was enough on a night when pitching was hit hard on both sides. Cedar Rapids kept battling back and erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning to turn a 16-11 deficit into an 18-16 lead.

Instead of folding, the Captains answered immediately.

Jeffrey Mercedes helped bring Lake County within a run in the ninth before Tommy Hawke put the ball in play and a Cedar Rapids error allowed two more runs to score, giving the Captains a 19-18 lead.

Cam Schuelke then delivered the pitching performance Lake County needed most, working a scoreless bottom of the ninth to secure the save.

Anthony Martinez, Cannon Peebles, Dauri Fernandez and Jose Pirela all homered for Lake County. Starter Aidan Major struggled, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 3⅔ innings, while Melkis Hernández earned the win in relief.

The victory improved Lake County to 27-26 in the second half. The Captains have won seven of their last 10 and remain 3½ games behind first-place Great Lakes.
