🌡️ Heat Advisory Issued for Mentor Wednesday as Heat Index Nears 100

Mentor and Lake County are under a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the hottest conditions expected during the afternoon.

Temperatures across Northeast Ohio are forecast to reach the low to mid-90s in many areas, while high humidity could push the heat index — what it feels like outside — to around 100 degrees in many communities.

Wednesday could also begin with rough weather. The National Weather Service says a cluster of thunderstorms may move through parts of Northeast Ohio during the morning, with some storms potentially producing damaging winds.

Once those storms move through, attention turns to the heat.

Residents spending extended time outdoors should take frequent cooling breaks, stay hydrated and move strenuous activities to cooler parts of the day when possible. Extra attention is warranted for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes and anyone with health conditions that can be aggravated by heat.

The heat should begin to ease after Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region, bringing additional chances for showers and thunderstorms Thursday.

📅 Mentor Planning Commission to Review City’s Long-Term Land-Use Plan Thursday

Mentor’s Planning Commission will meet Thursday evening to review the city’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan update, according to a public notice issued by the City of Mentor.

The work session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3 in Council Chambers on the third floor of the Mentor Municipal Center, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.

According to city planning materials, a comprehensive plan looks 20 years or more into the future, and Mentor’s current plan was adopted in April 2011.

The city says the update builds on its 2024 Housing Study and includes a review of commercial and industrial areas for potential development or redevelopment. The planning process is intended to help shape future land-use policies and zoning strategies.

For residents, Thursday’s meeting is an early step in that process. The city’s notice does not identify specific zoning changes, development proposals, affected properties or recommendations that commissioners will consider.

That means no major land-use change has been announced through this meeting notice. The more consequential story will come as specific recommendations emerge and the city explains what could change, where and when.

🏫 Mentor Students Share What Makes Their Schools Special

What do students enjoy most about attending Mentor Schools?

Mentor Public Schools recently put that question directly to students and compiled their responses into a short #MentorMoment video shared ahead of the new school year.

The video gives students the spotlight, offering a quick look at their own perspectives on being part of the Mentor school community.

It is a simple but timely back-to-school feature. While much of the conversation surrounding schools naturally focuses on schedules, policies, academics and district decisions, this video focuses instead on what students themselves enjoy about their schools.

For Mentor families and residents, it offers a positive glimpse of the district through the voices of the students who experience it every day. The video is very cute.

🌿LIVE BETTER: How to Rebuild a Routine After It Falls Apart

When your usual habits disappear, the best way back may be smaller than you think: restart one useful action and let consistency grow from there.

When a routine falls apart, the instinct is often to rebuild the whole thing at once.

Back to the early alarm. Back to the walk. Back to meal planning, stretching, reading, packing lunch and getting to bed on time.

That can feel productive, but it can also turn a restart into another overwhelming project.

Routines disappear for ordinary reasons. Work gets busy. Travel interrupts the week. Family needs change. A stressful stretch takes over. What worked a few months ago may simply stop fitting the life you have now.

Instead of asking, “How do I get everything back?” ask a smaller question:

“What is one useful action worth restarting first?”

Choose an anchor habit: one behavior that gives the day a little structure. It might be drinking a glass of water after waking, walking for ten minutes after dinner, preparing tomorrow’s breakfast before bed or putting your phone away at a set time.

Then restart below your old level.

If you once walked three miles, begin with ten minutes. If you used to prepare lunches for the entire week, pack tomorrow’s. If your evening routine had six steps, choose the one that helps most.

Starting small is not lowering the standard. It is rebuilding reliability.

And you do not need to wait for Monday, the first of the month or a quieter week. A routine can restart on a Wednesday afternoon.

Once the anchor feels dependable, decide what comes next. Some old habits are worth restoring. Others belonged to a different schedule, season or version of your life.

A temporary interruption is not permanent failure.

Sometimes it is useful information.

Restart one helpful action. Make it easy to repeat. Let it become steady.

Then build from there.

👉🏻 Before you try to bring everything back, the full Live Better edition includes a four-question Routine Restart Test, a busy-day strategy and a simple five-step plan for rebuilding habits around the life you have now.

⚾ Williams Fans Career-High 13 as Guardians Beat Blue Jays

Gavin Williams delivered exactly the kind of September start Cleveland needed Tuesday night, striking out a career-high 13 as the Guardians beat Toronto 6-1 at Progressive Field.

The victory strengthened Cleveland’s position in a crowded American League wild-card race. The Guardians entered the night holding a narrow lead for the final playoff spot and have now won 11 of 15 games since Aug. 12.

Williams controlled the game from the start, allowing just two singles and one unearned run over seven innings. Toronto did not collect its first hit until the fourth inning, and Williams finished even stronger, striking out the side in the seventh and fanning five of the final six hitters he faced.

Cleveland supplied the offense with three two-run homers.

Patrick Bailey put the Guardians ahead 2-1 in the fifth with his eighth homer of the season. Rookie Angel Genao added a 426-foot pinch-hit homer in the seventh, and Angel Martinez stretched the lead to 6-1 with his 14th homer in the eighth.

Hunter Gaddis and Matt Festa each worked a scoreless inning to complete the three-hitter.

The Guardians continue the series Wednesday with Joey Cantillo scheduled to face Dylan Cease as Cleveland tries to keep its late-season momentum rolling in the playoff race. Cleveland currently holds a 1.5-game lead over two teams for the final wild-card spot, while sitting three games behind the Chicago White Sox.

⚾ Pirela’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Captains Past Loons

The Lake County Captains kept their second-half division hopes alive Tuesday night with a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win over the Great Lakes Loons.

José Pirela delivered the biggest swing, hitting a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. It capped a three-RBI night for Pirela, who also doubled home Anthony Martinez and Cannon Peebles in the sixth to give Lake County its first lead.

The game had been scoreless through five innings, thanks in part to a strong outing from Captains starter Harrison Bodendorf. He allowed just two hits over five shutout innings while striking out seven.

Great Lakes scored first in the sixth and later regained the lead, 3-2, on Victor Rodrigues’ two-run homer in the seventh. Lake County answered again when Dauri Fernández doubled home Tommy Hawke to tie the game.

Cam Schuelke earned the win with two scoreless relief innings and two strikeouts.

The victory moved Lake County to 31-28 in the second half and within 3½ games of Great Lakes in the division race.

With only six games remaining — all against the Loons — the Captains still have an opportunity to make up ground directly against the team they are chasing.

👉🏻 Tuesday’s walk-off was important, but the bigger story is what the Captains now face over their final six games. See where the division race stands and why every remaining matchup with Great Lakes carries added weight on the Local Buzz website.

🏀 Cavaliers Move Local Game Broadcasts to DAZN

Cavaliers fans in the Mentor area will have a new local streaming option beginning with the 2026–27 season.

The Cavaliers announced that locally televised preseason and regular-season games will stream live and on demand through DAZN. The change means fans who regularly watch non-national Cavaliers games may need to use a different service once the new season begins.

The team also said 15 games will be available free and simulcast over the air locally, giving viewers several opportunities to watch without a DAZN subscription.

One important detail remains unanswered: subscription pricing has not yet been announced. The Cavaliers also have not released all viewing details for the new arrangement.

For local fans, the main takeaway is simple: how you watch most locally televised Cavaliers games is changing this season, but the full cost and viewing options are still to come.
