A long-planned redevelopment in Mentor’s Old Village area has cleared a major hurdle.

Mentor City Council unanimously approved Ordinance 26-081 on Sept. 1, a financing measure tied to the Uptown Mentor project. City Manager Kenneth J. Filipiak told council he believes the ordinance is “the last step to allow our Uptown Mentor project to go forward.”

The project has been in development for years. City officials said previous council actions involving the properties date to 2020, 2023 and 2025, and the city’s law director told council that a related deed transfer has already been completed.

Filipiak said the city is looking forward to seeing significant improvement in the Old Village area.

What remains unclear is when residents will actually see work begin. The Sept. 1 meeting did not include a construction start date, completion schedule, total project cost or current tenant lineup.

A major expansion of cancer care in Lake County is nearing completion, and it will eventually change where some Mentor patients receive treatment.

University Hospitals is preparing to open a new $39 million Seidman Cancer Center at UH TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township. UH has said the regional cancer hub is expected to open this fall and will expand medical and radiation oncology, infusion services, supportive care, pharmacy services and access to clinical trials that previously were available only at UH Cleveland Medical Center.

The project has a direct Mentor connection. UH announced last year that cancer services currently offered at its Mentor Health Center will eventually move to TriPoint. The Mentor buildings used for those services are expected to be repurposed for other medical care.

UH’s website continues to list Seidman Cancer Center services at the Mentor Health Center, so that transition has not yet been completed.

News 5 Cleveland reported Sept. 2 that the new TriPoint center will span more than 40,000 square feet, with 35 infusion treatment areas, 40 exam rooms and advanced diagnostic imaging. The station also reported that the facility is expected to be completed in about six weeks.

UH has said affected patients will be contacted directly as appointments are moved and that it intends to minimize disruption during the transition.

A new wave of Lake County children has enrolled to receive free books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Carrie Dotson, executive director of local program partner Lifeline, told News 5 Cleveland reporter Katie Ussin that approximately 7,500 Lake County children are currently enrolled. Dotson estimated that the program added a couple hundred local children during the week following Parton’s passing.

The Imagination Library mails one free, age-appropriate book each month to participating children from enrollment until their fifth birthday. Every Ohio child younger than five is eligible, regardless of family income.

Although the books are free to families, Lifeline raises the local funding needed to sustain the Lake County program. Support comes from organizations including United Way of Lake County and the Lubrizol Foundation, along with grants and individual donations.

A wagging tail, turned head or flattened ear is only part of the message. Learning to notice the whole animal can help you recognize comfort, uncertainty and the moments when your pet would rather have some space.

Pets communicate constantly, but their messages rarely come through one signal alone.

A wagging tail, flattened ears or a turned head can mean different things depending on what the rest of the body is doing and what is happening around the animal.

Start with the whole picture. A comfortable pet often looks loose rather than rigid. The eyes may appear soft, the mouth relaxed, and movement easy. An uncertain or overstimulated pet may become still, lower the body, turn away, pin or rotate the ears, tuck or lash the tail, hide, retreat or watch something more intensely.

Context matters just as much. A dog rolling onto its back may be enjoying play in one situation and trying to reduce tension in another. A wagging tail does not automatically mean a dog wants to be approached. A cat that begins lashing its tail during petting may be signaling that the interaction has gone on long enough.

When a pet repeatedly turns away, freezes, hides, tries to leave, growls or hisses, the safest response is usually to create more space rather than insist on continued contact.

It also helps to learn what relaxed behavior normally looks like for your own pet. Ear shape, tail carriage, posture and social style vary among individual animals, so comparison with that pet’s usual behavior is often more useful than relying on a universal chart.

Finally, pay attention to change. A pet that suddenly becomes irritable, withdrawn, reluctant to be touched or unusually reactive may be uncomfortable or unwell. New or persistent behavioral changes deserve a conversation with your veterinarian.

You do not have to become an animal behavior expert.

You simply have to notice more before assuming more.

The Cleveland Guardians’ hold on an American League wild-card spot got a little more uncomfortable Wednesday night.

Toronto rolled to an 11-0 win at Progressive Field, cutting Cleveland’s advantage over the Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers to just 1½ games for the third and final AL wild-card position.

Guardians starter Joey Cantillo endured a difficult night, allowing a career-high nine runs over 5⅓ innings. Five of those runs were unearned after a defensive error helped Toronto extend a five-run second inning.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered the biggest blow, launching a three-run homer and finishing 3-for-4 with a season-high five RBI.

Cleveland’s offense never found an answer against Toronto starter Dylan Cease. The Cy Young Award contender scattered four hits across six scoreless innings, struck out four and did not allow a runner beyond second base.

The Blue Jays added a Josh Smith solo homer in the eighth and finished with their second-largest victory margin of the season.

The loss evened the series at one game apiece and added more pressure to an increasingly crowded playoff race.

Cleveland will try to rebound in Thursday’s series finale, with Tanner Bibee scheduled to face Toronto right-hander José Soriano.

The Lake County Captains’ playoff hopes took a major hit Wednesday night as the Great Lakes Loons rolled to a 13-7 victory at Classic Auto Group Park.

Great Lakes grabbed a 3-0 lead through two innings and then broke the game open with 10 runs between the fifth and seventh. Lake County eventually fell behind 13-1 before mounting a late rally that made the final score more respectable.

Captains starter Joey Oakie took the loss in his first start at Classic Auto Group Park, allowing three runs on four hits over two innings while striking out two and walking one.

The Captains did show some life late. Anthony Martinez homered in the fourth, while Dauri Fernández started a five-run eighth with a solo home run. Riley Nelson, José Pirela, Garrett Howe and Tommy Hawke also helped drive in runs during the rally. Pirela added an RBI double in the ninth.

But the bigger concern is the standings.

Lake County dropped to 31-29 in the second half and sits 4½ games behind first-place Great Lakes. West Michigan is also ahead of the Captains, leaving Lake County with virtually no room for another loss.

The Captains and Loons continue the crucial series Thursday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
