Mentor Schools is asking families, staff and community members to weigh in as the district considers major changes to how students could be organized beginning with the 2027-28 school year.

Among the ideas under discussion is moving eighth-grade students to Mentor High School. That could free space at Shore and Memorial middle schools, which could potentially serve grades 4-7, while elementary buildings would be consolidated for younger students.

Nothing has been finalized.

The district says attendance boundaries, transportation, staffing, student supports and transition planning are among the issues that would still need to be studied before recommendations or decisions are made. It has also said no decisions have been made about which elementary buildings could close.

The discussions are part of a larger financial plan. Mentor Schools has already implemented about $6.6 million in reductions for the 2026-27 school year and says another $3.3 million in reductions are planned for 2027-28, likely involving consolidation and additional staffing reductions. Those future reductions are expected to move forward regardless of the outcome of the district's November operating levy.

Residents can provide feedback through the district's consolidation survey, which remains open through Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Families planning to attend Mentor’s Just Kids’ Stuff Garage Sale should note an important schedule correction.

The event will be held Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mentor Community Recreation Center, 6000 Heisley Road. The City of Mentor says its printed Fall 2026 Mentor Special Edition incorrectly listed the hours as 2 to 6 p.m.

Shoppers can browse gently used children’s clothing, toys, books, baby gear and other family items in an indoor, weather-protected setting.

Residents interested in selling can reserve a table for $25, while the nonresident price is $30. Vendors should call 440-205-3608 to confirm availability.

Mentor is not included in Lake County’s latest mosquito treatment schedule for the week of Sept. 7.

The Lake County General Health District’s updated schedule lists treatment in Painesville Township on Tuesday, Sept. 8; Kirtland and Perry on Wednesday, Sept. 9; and Willowick on Thursday, Sept. 10. No spraying is scheduled for Monday because of the Labor Day holiday.

The Health District uses mosquito treatment to help reduce mosquito populations and the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. Treatment areas are selected based on mosquito trap counts, resident complaints and past activity.

For Mentor residents, the key takeaway is simple: no treatment is currently scheduled in the city during this round.

The schedule can change, however. Weather conditions, mosquito counts, temperatures, wind and other factors can delay, cancel or alter planned treatment.

Residents who want to check for future Mentor dates can follow updates from the Lake County General Health District or call its mosquito treatment hotline at 440-350-2088.

Skip the usual attraction checklist. Pittsburgh feels surprisingly new when you build the day around neighborhood markets, independent shops, riverfront walks and a view from above.

Pittsburgh is familiar enough that many Northeast Ohio travelers think they already know it. But a return trip can feel surprisingly different when Downtown becomes the backdrop rather than the destination.

Start in the Strip District, where the best approach is simply to walk. Markets, specialty food shops, coffee stops and independent businesses make it easy to spend a full morning browsing instead of treating the neighborhood as a quick stop on the way somewhere else. Pick up something local, stop for lunch and let the neighborhood set the pace.

From there, continue into Lawrenceville. The two neighborhoods fit naturally into the same part of the day, keeping the route manageable while adding a different mix of shops, restaurants and neighborhood character.

The key is not trying to cover the whole city.

Choose two or three compatible areas and let Pittsburgh’s geography shape the trip. After the Strip and Lawrenceville, make time for a riverfront walk before heading across the Monongahela to Mount Washington.

An incline ride and a walk along Grandview Avenue provide the clearest view of how Pittsburgh fits together: rivers below, bridges in every direction, Downtown at the point and neighborhoods climbing the surrounding hills.

For a one-day trip, keep the plan simple: morning in the Strip, early afternoon in Lawrenceville, a riverfront walk and Mount Washington before heading home.

Stay overnight and the pace improves. Linger over dinner, save the overlook for evening or give the riverfront more time the next morning.

Repeat visitors may discover that the most memorable part of the day is not a major attraction at all. It may be a market counter, a small shop, a stretch of trail or a neighborhood street they had always passed through.

Sometimes a familiar city feels new when you spend more time in the places between the landmarks.

One week after winning a one-point game by a 14–13 score, Lake Catholic found itself on the other side of the exact same result Saturday.

Akron Buchtel edged the Cougars 14–13 in a nonconference matchup at Tim Flossie Stadium, dropping Lake Catholic to 1–2 through the first three games of the season. The victory was Buchtel’s first of the year and also moved the Griffins to 1–2.

For Lake Catholic, it was another close finish after last week’s 14–13 victory at Avon Lake. The Cougars opened the season with a 41–7 loss at Cardinal Mooney before responding with two straight games decided by a single point.

A full scoring breakdown and individual statistics from Saturday’s game were not available Saturday evening.

Lake Catholic now turns its attention to a notable home date with Gilmour Academy on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on the Lake Catholic campus, where the school says the matchup will be only the third varsity football game played on campus.

The Cougars will enter that game with a chance to get back to .500 after an opening stretch in which very little has separated them from their opponents over the past two weeks.

The Guardians couldn’t carry Friday’s doubleheader momentum into Saturday night, falling 6-0 to Detroit in Cleveland.

Rookie starter Parker Messick still delivered one of the bright spots, striking out a career-high 12 over six innings. He allowed three runs, with Riley Greene accounting for much of the damage on two solo homers.

Cleveland’s offense never found an answer. The Guardians managed just three hits and pushed only two runners beyond first base as Tigers starter Framber Valdez worked seven scoreless innings.

Despite the loss, Cleveland remained in the American League’s third wild-card position, keeping the Guardians in playoff position as the regular season moves deeper into September.

Outfielder Chase DeLauter missed the game with a sprained right wrist and is considered day-to-day.

The series wraps up Sunday, with Gavin Williams scheduled to start for Cleveland against Detroit’s Jackson Jobe.

The Lake County Captains were shut out 5-0 by the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday, leaving one final game before the season ends.

Starter Nelson Keljo took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits over 2⅔ innings. He struck out five but walked six.

Great Lakes scored all three early runs in the third inning on bases-loaded walks to Eduardo Guerrero, Victor Rodrigues and Gio Cueto.

Lake County’s bullpen kept the game close through the middle innings, but the Captains’ offense was unable to break through. The Loons added two more runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Rodrigues and an RBI single from Cueto.

The Captains will finish their season Sunday at 1 p.m.

It’s also Family Fun Sunday, with pregame catch on the field, player autographs and postgame kids run the bases.
