Mentor families could soon get answers to one of the biggest questions facing the district: what the school system will look like after consolidation.

Mentor Public Schools officials said at the Sept. 8 Board of Education meeting that they hope to finalize the grade configuration and identify the buildings involved in consolidation by the end of September. Additional special board meetings are expected this month as the district works toward a plan for the 2027-28 school year.

Several major decisions remain.

The district's goal is to close three elementary buildings, but officials are still testing different school combinations against updated enrollment projections. A K-4 elementary configuration is one possibility, although officials said some elementary buildings could remain at or near capacity for years.

Another closely watched option is moving eighth graders to Mentor High School. The district said the high school has considerably more available space than other buildings, but board members also raised concerns about the developmental impact of placing eighth-graders in an 8-12 setting.

Special-education space, transportation, schedules and building layouts are also part of the review.

Finances add another constraint. The district says consolidation needs to generate roughly $3.4 million to $3.5 million in savings, following about $6.6 million in reductions already made this school year.

A staggered transition remains possible, but delaying some closures could also delay part of those savings.

Mentor residents are seeing construction on several fronts this fall, with overnight sewer and road work underway while AT&T continues fiber installation in multiple neighborhoods.

Storm and sanitary sewer work began near Center Street and Johnnycake Ridge Road to prepare utilities for future service to the Bolton property. Crews are working from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with lane closures overnight. Normal daytime traffic patterns are restored each morning. At the Sept. 1 City Council meeting, officials said the intersection phase, including pavement restoration, was expected to take about two weeks.

The first phase of Mentor Avenue resurfacing is also underway from the city’s eastern boundary to approximately Hopkins Road. Most work will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with completion expected by the end of October.

Meanwhile, AT&T has fiber projects underway in Pinegate, Championship Estates/Norwood-Durrell and neighborhoods off Jackson Street between Hopkins and Heisley roads.

The AT&T work raised concerns after some Championship Estates-area residents said they received no door hanger or letter before crews began working within utility easements extending into their yards. City officials said they would press AT&T to improve advance notification.

The City of Mentor will hold a community remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The ceremony will take place at the Mentor Safety Forces Memorial, located between the Mentor Police Department and Mentor Fire Station No. 5 at 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.

Residents are invited to gather in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in New York City, at the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. The ceremony will also honor the first responders who ran toward danger that morning.

For many Americans, the 25th anniversary is a significant milestone — a chance to remember those who were lost, recognize acts of courage and service, and reflect on the sense of unity that followed the attacks.

The Guardians let an early lead get away Wednesday night in Baltimore, falling 9-5 to the Orioles as Cleveland continues to fight for postseason position.

Cleveland jumped ahead 2-0, but the game changed dramatically in the third inning. Baltimore sent 14 batters to the plate and scored eight runs against starter Foster Griffin, turning the Guardians’ early advantage into an 8-2 deficit.

Dylan Beavers had two hits and drove in three runs during the Orioles’ big inning.

Cleveland showed some power while trying to climb back into the game. Chase DeLauter and Nathaniel Lowe each homered, but the Guardians never recovered from Baltimore’s third-inning surge.

The loss carries added weight with the American League playoff race tightening in September. Cleveland remains in position for the third AL wild-card spot while also trying to catch the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Both teams are off Thursday. The Guardians open a three-game series Friday night in Minnesota, with left-hander Parker Messick scheduled to start. Messick is 11-9 with a 2.53 ERA as Cleveland enters another important series in its postseason push.
