A long-planned transformation of Mentor’s Old Village area is expected to take a major step forward this month.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the approximately $10 million Uptown Mentor development is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25, according to Cleveland.com. Plans call for a four-story mixed-use building with 45 market-rate apartments and approximately 14,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.

The development is planned along Mentor Avenue in the Old Village commercial corridor. Restaurants, shops and other neighborhood-oriented businesses could eventually occupy the first floor, although no tenants have been announced.

City documents describe the building as a gateway project intended to help create a more attractive, walkable commercial district while remaining sensitive to nearby residential properties. Mentor City Council approved a development and public-financing agreement for the project on Sept. 1.

The groundbreaking will mark an important public milestone, but preparations have already extended beyond architectural plans. Environmental treatment has begun on portions of the property, and the city’s agreement establishes detailed requirements covering the building, apartments, parking, landscaping and long-term financing.

Lake Catholic football is coming home Saturday — and this won’t be a typical Cougars home game.

Lake Catholic will host Gilmour Academy at noon Sept. 12 at the school’s John Gibbons Outdoor Athletic Complex. According to the school, it will be only the third varsity football game played on campus in Lake Catholic history.

That makes Saturday a rare opportunity for students, families and alumni who are accustomed to seeing the Cougars play most home games away from the school campus.

Lake Catholic is building a full game-day experience around the occasion. Parking and tailgating begin at 7 a.m., general admission gates open at 10:30, and food trucks, a Kids Zone and the Spirit Store open at 11. Kickoff follows at noon.

There will also be a strong alumni connection. Lake Catholic plans to recognize its 2001 state championship football team at halftime, while members of the Class of 1981 will be gathering on campus as part of their 45-year reunion weekend.

General admission tickets are currently listed at $11 online, and the school recommends purchasing in advance. Fans should check Lake Catholic’s official game-day information before heading out for the latest ticket and parking details.

Mentor residents looking to build their technology skills have three free learning opportunities coming up at Mentor Public Library.

The library will offer Excel 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 22; Excel 2 on Wednesday, Sept. 23; and iPad Basics on Thursday, Sept. 24. All three classes run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Main Library, 8215 Mentor Avenue.

Excel 1 introduces worksheets, basic formulas and printing options, while Excel 2 moves into more advanced work with formulas, functions, troubleshooting and worksheet formatting. The iPad class covers everyday device navigation, common apps and settings.

The programs are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

There are a few things to know before choosing a class. Excel 1 requires previous Microsoft Word experience, and iPad Basics is intended for non-iPhone users. iPad participants also need to bring their own device and Apple ID login information.

Mentor-on-the-Lake’s ninth annual Fall Festival will bring six hours of family activities, food and community fun to the City Hall grounds on Saturday, September 12.

According to the city, the festival will run from 1 to 7 p.m. and feature bounce houses, pony rides, local vendors, food trucks and live entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Families can make a full day of it or stop by for a favorite activity, grab something to eat and browse the vendor displays. Admission and parking are free.

The festival will be held at Mentor-on-the-Lake City Hall, 5860 Andrews Road. Visitors may want to check the city’s official channels before leaving home for any last-minute schedule or weather-related updates.

Mentor returns home Friday night with a chance to put last week behind it and start Greater Cleveland Conference play on the right foot.

The Cardinals host Brunswick at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. Both teams enter at 2-1, but their first three weeks have looked very different.

Mentor opened with two wins before running into a strong St. Ignatius team last weekend. Brunswick, meanwhile, has been far more unpredictable — capable of scoring quickly, but also vulnerable defensively.

That contrast gives Friday’s matchup some real intrigue.

For Mentor, the biggest question is how quickly the Cardinals can reestablish their rhythm. Their best football so far has come when they’ve controlled the pace, sustained drives and kept the game from turning chaotic. That could be especially important against a Brunswick team that has already shown it is comfortable in high-scoring games.

There is also added significance because conference play begins now. Mentor swept the GCC last season, including a convincing win over Brunswick, but Friday starts a new race with both teams back at 0-0.

A strong response at home would give the Cardinals exactly the kind of reset they need.
