A disagreement involving Mentor School Board member Rose Ioppolo and Superintendent Craig Heath moved into public view during the Sept. 8 Board of Education meeting, where board members offered sharply different accounts of an earlier confrontation.

Ioppolo said Heath behaved in a way she considered unprofessional, intimidating and untrue during an Aug. 27 executive session. She said she had hoped the matter could be addressed privately and told the board she wanted accountability for what occurred.

Other board members disputed parts of her account.

Vice President Lauren Marchaza called Ioppolo’s description “devoid of the facts” and said she would not participate further because the discussion involved a personnel matter.

Board member Daniel Hardesty described the Aug. 27 incident as a verbal altercation involving two people. He specifically said there was no physical threat and said both sides contributed to the confrontation.

Board President Maggie Cook said Ioppolo presented board members with a written account shortly before the Sept. 8 meeting and wanted the matter addressed within a limited period. Cook said the board needed more time to review it.

Because the underlying incident occurred during executive session, the public meeting record does not establish whose description of that encounter is correct.

After roughly 16 minutes of discussion, the board unanimously approved its previous meeting minutes. Ioppolo then said she was excusing herself and left before the first public-comment period.

The disagreement comes as the board is also working through major decisions involving school consolidation, district finances and a November operating levy.

Two areas of eastern Mentor are scheduled for mosquito treatment this week as part of the Lake County General Health District’s mosquito-control program.

Mentor 1-A is scheduled for treatment Tuesday, September 15, followed by Mentor 1-B on Wednesday, September 16. Both areas are in eastern Mentor, and all treatment is weather permitting.

Residents should know that a scheduled date does not guarantee spraying will take place. Treatment can be delayed or canceled because of winds above 15 mph, a 50% or greater chance of rain, temperatures below 55 degrees, mechanical problems, or mosquito counts that fall below the district’s treatment threshold. Officials also evaluate conditions on Air Quality Advisory days.

The Health District selects treatment areas based on mosquito-trap results, complaints and past mosquito activity. The program is intended to reduce nuisance mosquitoes and help lower the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Because the schedule can change daily, Mentor residents are encouraged to verify the latest information before treatment night. The Health District’s 24-hour mosquito treatment hotline is 440-350-2088 or 440-918-2088.

A few passing sprinkles didn’t keep families from enjoying Mentor-on-the-Lake’s ninth annual Fall Festival on Saturday.

The Sept. 12 community celebration featured animal exhibits, a magic show, inflatables, pony rides, yard games, food trucks, community vendors and live music. Mayor Dave Eva has described the Fall Festival as the city’s largest annual event.

A big part of the festival’s appeal is that the family entertainment remains free. That gives residents an afternoon of activities without having to add admission costs to the family budget.

The festival has grown in popularity over the years, although no official attendance figure was provided for this year’s event.

Despite a little damp weather, the festival once again gave Mentor-on-the-Lake families a chance to spend time together and enjoy one of the city’s biggest community traditions.

Skip the citywide checklist. A day centered on German Village and Franklin Park offers historic streets, independent shops, good food and gardens at a pace that leaves room to actually enjoy them.

Columbus can easily become a weekend of driving from one popular district to another. For this trip, do the opposite: choose a small part of the city and stay awhile.

Start in German Village, where the neighborhood itself is the attraction. Brick streets and sidewalks, closely spaced historic homes, small gardens and a mix of restaurants, cafés and independent businesses make it an easy place to explore on foot.

Give yourself permission to wander before deciding what comes next. Notice the masonry, ironwork, front steps and little details that disappear when you are watching the clock. Stop for coffee or breakfast, then make time for the Book Loft of German Village, the independent bookstore known for its maze of 32 rooms. This is not a ten-minute stop.

Stay in the neighborhood for lunch. Grab a sandwich for Schiller Park, settle into a café or choose a sit-down meal, but resist the urge to drive across Columbus for something “better.” The point is to let one neighborhood hold your attention.

Later, make the day’s one purposeful move to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Its gardens, plant collections, artwork and current exhibitions create a natural change of pace without turning the afternoon into another sightseeing circuit. Some historic Conservatory spaces are closed for a major renovation, so check current visitor information before you go.

If you want more time, stay overnight near German Village or downtown and give the evening back to the neighborhood.

That is the appeal of this version of Columbus. You cover less ground, but notice more of where you are.

A city getaway can feel remarkably personal when the itinerary leaves room for walking, browsing, eating and simply staying put.

Lake Catholic made a rare varsity game on its own Mentor campus a memorable one Saturday, defeating Gilmour Academy, 14-7, in a physical matchup decided in the final minutes.

According to reporting from the News-Herald, Saturday marked only the third varsity game played on Lake Catholic’s campus. The Cougars are now 3-0 in those games.

Lake Catholic took a 7-0 lead after recovering a Gilmour fumble on the opening possession. Quarterback Max Pisano later connected with Brady Moran for the touchdown.

Gilmour tied the game in the third quarter with a 15-play, 85-yard drive, but Lake Catholic’s defense delivered when it mattered most.

Pisano stripped the ball from a Gilmour player late in the fourth quarter and returned the recovery to the Lancers’ 41. The Cougars converted the takeaway into the winning score when senior Danny Zmorowski ran in from 2 yards with 1:29 remaining.

Junior Amarion Levitt then intercepted a pass with about 30 seconds left to seal the victory.

Lake Catholic improved to 2-2 and will try to win two straight when it hosts rival Benedictine on Friday, Sept. 18.

The Guardians lost more ground in a tightening playoff race Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis.

The loss dropped Cleveland to 1½ games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. The Guardians also hold just a one-game lead in the race for the final AL wild-card spot, leaving little margin for error down the stretch.

Cleveland struck first on an RBI from Travis Bazzana, but Minnesota answered with four runs in the third inning against Franco Aleman. Twins prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez tied the game with a home run in his first major-league at-bat, and Minnesota added three more runs before Cleveland escaped the inning.

Daniel Espino had opened the game with two scoreless innings, but Aleman allowed four earned runs and five hits while recording only two outs.

The Guardians fought back in the fifth. Brayan Rocchio drove in a run on a groundout, and Steven Kwan followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Cleveland could not finish the comeback. The Guardians went hitless over the final four innings and struck out eight times in the final three.

Cleveland will try to salvage the series finale Sunday, with Tanner Bibee scheduled to face Minnesota’s Joe Ryan. With the division race widening and the wild-card cushion down to one game, the Guardians need a quick response.
