A Mentor man has been sentenced to a minimum of 24 years and a maximum of 28 years in prison in the case involving two bicyclists seriously injured near the entrance to Headlands Beach in June.

Michael Leppelmeier, 42, pleaded guilty in July to two counts of felonious assault and one count of robbery. Cleveland 19 reported that Lake County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey W. Ruple imposed the sentence Monday.

The case stems from a June 3 incident on Headlands Road. According to the City of Mentor, a 72-year-old Mentor man told police an SUV crossed the double yellow line and struck him head-on while he was riding his bicycle. A 68-year-old Mentor man told officers the driver stopped, assaulted him and threw his bicycle into a nearby pond. Both men suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police traced the vehicle to an Orchard Road home, where officers said Leppelmeier approached them with a knife before retreating inside. An hours-long standoff followed before Mentor SWAT officers took him into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m.

The victims were again at the center of the case during Monday's sentencing. Cleveland 19 reported that one told the court he believed his bicycle helmet may have saved his life, while another asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence.

Prosecutors requested a 20-year prison term, according to Cleveland 19. Judge Ruple imposed the longer 24-to-28-year sentence.

Residents in southern Mentor are scheduled for mosquito treatment Tuesday, Sept. 22, as Lake County General Health District crews continue mosquito-control work around the county.

The treatment is scheduled for Mentor zones 3A and 3B, which cover the southern portion of the city. The work is weather permitting, and residents should be aware that the schedule can change even after an area has been placed on the list.

The health district bases treatment decisions on mosquito trap counts, complaints and an area's past history. Treatment can be delayed or canceled if mosquito counts fall below the required threshold, winds exceed 15 mph, there is at least a 50% chance of rain, temperatures drop below 55 degrees or equipment problems arise. The district also evaluates whether treatment is warranted on Air Quality Advisory days.

You do not need to diagnose the house in the rain.

Just watch carefully enough to learn what happens when the water starts moving.

Mentor took Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin down to the wire Monday night before falling 3–2 in a five-set match in Chardon.

The Cardinals held a 2–1 advantage after three sets, but NDCL rallied to take the fourth and then won the deciding fifth set. The set scores were 21–25, 25–13, 19–25, 25–21 and 15–6. The loss moved Mentor to 6–4 on the season.

Mentor has little turnaround time. The Cardinals are back on the court tonight at Cleveland Heights, continuing a busy stretch of their schedule.

Lake Catholic returns home tonight looking to add to an impressive start to the season.

The Cougars enter their matchup with Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy at 10–3, including a 3–0 victory over St. Joseph Academy last week. Lake Catholic's most recent match was a tight 3–2 loss to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Sept. 17.

Several Cougars have produced strong numbers this season. Senior Ahnna Bergant leads the team at 3.1 kills per set, junior Emma Riebe has recorded 50 blocks, and junior Lola Loncar has 214 digs and 28 aces.
