Newly reported police and school district records are providing important context to a Mentor Schools dispute that Mentor Local Buzz witnessed at the Sept. 8 Board of Education meeting.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer report that a threatening Facebook comment about Superintendent Craig Heath was reported to Mentor police Aug. 27, two days after a parent posted criticism of Heath online.

Board member Rose Ioppolo says she accidentally “liked” the parent’s original post — not the later threatening comment — and had no involvement with the Fairport Harbor man who wrote it.

According to the police report reviewed by cleveland.com, investigators contacted the man, who acknowledged writing the comment but said he initially believed the situation was fictional, later removed it and would not harm anyone. Police ultimately closed the case.

The investigation later became part of a disagreement during an Aug. 27 executive session. Ioppolo says Heath wrongly connected her to the threat because of the accidental Facebook like. The district disputes that account and says Heath did not accuse her of being associated with the alleged threat.

Mentor Local Buzz witnessed the dispute become public Sept. 8, when Ioppolo criticized Heath’s conduct during the board meeting before leaving early.

Lake County residents can weigh in Thursday on Vision 2050, a long-range comprehensive plan intended to help guide the county’s growth and planning decisions for years to come.

The Lake County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public-comment workshop for Thursday, September 24, at 10:30 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers at the Lake County Administration Building, 105 Main Street, Building A, 5th Floor, Painesville. Commissioners will hear public comments while they consider adoption of the plan. The county’s notice does not say that adoption or a final vote is guaranteed Thursday.

Vision 2050 is Lake County’s first new comprehensive planning effort in roughly 65 years. The county says it addresses subjects including housing, transportation, economic development, agriculture, parks and recreation, education and environmental stewardship. Mentor Marsh is specifically identified among the natural resources considered in the planning effort.

An easier morning may have less to do with adding another good habit and more to do with deciding, preparing and letting go of a few things before the day begins.

A calmer morning often begins the night before—not with a complicated routine, but with fewer decisions waiting for you when the day starts.

Think about the first 30 minutes after you wake up. You may be deciding what to wear, what to pack, what to eat, what the kids need, where your keys went, whether there is time for one more task and whether you should already be checking messages or headlines.

None of those choices is especially difficult on its own. Together, they can make the morning feel crowded before you have even left home.

The goal is not to wake earlier. It is to remove a little friction.

That might mean setting out clothes, putting work or school items by the door, packing lunches or deciding on breakfast before bed. It might also mean deciding that the dishwasher, laundry or email can wait.

A useful rule is to protect three things:

Decide what you can before morning.

Put essential items where you will actually need them.

Remove at least one task that does not have to happen before you leave or begin work.

Then protect a small amount of transition time. Five or ten unclaimed minutes can be enough to keep one delay from making the whole morning feel rushed.

Phone habits deserve attention, too. If notifications or headlines immediately pull you into other people’s priorities, consider waiting until you are dressed, fed or otherwise ready for the day.

Every household will look different. A parent managing a school departure, an early-shift worker and someone working from home do not need the same routine.

The useful question is simple: What can tomorrow morning ask less of you?

A calmer start is often created not by adding more habits, but by removing unnecessary pressure.

The Guardians found another way to win Tuesday night — and with only five games left, every one matters.

Nathaniel Lowe’s sacrifice fly in the ninth inning scored Chase DeLauter and lifted Cleveland to a 3–2 victory over Boston, extending the Guardians’ winning streak to six games and keeping them alone atop the AL Central.

Cleveland improved to 82–75, maintaining a one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox, who also won Tuesday.

That one-game cushion is especially important because Chicago owns the tiebreaker after winning the season series 7–6. If the teams finish with identical records, the White Sox win the division. Cleveland therefore needs to finish outright ahead of Chicago. The Guardians’ division-clinching magic number is five.

Angel Martínez had three hits Tuesday, while rookie Parker Messick allowed one run over five innings. Boston tied the game 2–2 in the eighth, but Cleveland immediately answered in the ninth. Cade Smith then worked a scoreless bottom half for his 40th save.

Cleveland has two games remaining in Boston, followed by three at Kansas City to close the regular season. Chicago has two remaining at Kansas City before hosting Colorado for three.

Mentor boys soccer continued its recent turnaround Tuesday night with a 6-2 road victory over Riverside, giving the Cardinals their third win in their last four matches.

The surge follows a difficult stretch in which Mentor dropped six straight. Since then, the Cardinals have beaten Chardon 10-1, Euclid 7-1 and now Riverside, with their only loss during the four-game stretch coming against Avon.

Mentor improved to 4-7 with Tuesday’s victory and snapped a five-game road losing streak dating back to last season.

The Cardinals return home Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they host Shaker Heights at 7 p.m.

Lake Catholic volleyball survived a back-and-forth battle Tuesday night, defeating Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 3-2 in Mentor.

The Cougars took the decisive fifth set 15-9 after the teams traded the first four sets, 25-11, 20-25, 27-25 and 23-25.

Lola Loncar led the defensive effort with 30 digs and four aces, while Ahnna Bergant delivered 22 kills, 16 digs and a solo block.

The victory improved Lake Catholic to 11-3 and extended the Cougars’ home winning streak to 15 matches dating back to last season.

Lake Catholic is back home Thursday against Beaumont, with varsity scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
