A long-running effort to repair malfunctioning lights along State Route 2 in Lake County appears to be moving closer to construction, with county officials now identifying a potential funding source and possible 2027 timeline.

Lake County and the six cities along Route 2 — including Mentor — have been negotiating a replacement for the decades-old maintenance agreement covering the highway.

Earlier this month, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said the city had received a draft agreement but still wanted a financing provision addressed. Now, the negotiations appear to have advanced.

Lake County Commissioner Morris Beverage III told News 5 Cleveland that the county and cities are close to a new agreement. Beverage said approximately $1.8 million remains in a county permissive motor-vehicle-tax fund and that the county plans to use that money for the Route 2 lighting project.

Once a new agreement is signed, the Lake County Engineer's Office would put the lighting work out to bid. Beverage told News 5 that construction could potentially begin as early as spring 2027 if the communities and county reach agreement soon.

For Mentor drivers, that could mean progress on a lighting problem that has frustrated Route 2 motorists for years.

The project is not yet final, however. The maintenance agreement still must be completed and signed before bidding and construction can move forward.

As fall leaves begin piling up around Mentor, the city is reminding residents that where those leaves end up can make a difference for local streams — and ultimately Lake Erie.

Residents should never sweep or blow leaves, grass clippings or fertilizer into storm drains or dump yard waste along stream banks. According to the City of Mentor, excess leaves and grass can reduce oxygen levels in the water, harm aquatic life and contribute to flooding when storm drains become blocked.

There are better options for fall cleanup. Residents can compost leaves and other yard waste, use a mulching mower to return chopped material to the lawn, or bag yard waste for collection.

The city also recommends taking a little extra care when fertilizing lawns this fall. Consider testing the soil before applying fertilizer, use organic products when appropriate, and always sweep fertilizer that lands on driveways, sidewalks or other hard surfaces back onto the lawn rather than allowing it to wash into storm sewers.

Stormwater can carry pollutants from neighborhoods into local waterways and eventually Lake Erie, making a few simple cleanup habits important for the entire community.

Deshaun Watson delivered when Cleveland needed him most Sunday, leading a late touchdown drive that lifted the Browns past Carolina 21–18.

Trailing 18–13 with 4:25 remaining, Watson guided Cleveland on a 65-yard, eight-play drive and found Harold Fannin Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown with 1:48 left. Watson then connected with Denzel Boston on the two-point conversion, giving the Browns their second straight comeback win.

Watson finished 16 of 30 for 144 yards and two touchdowns, both to Fannin, while adding 45 rushing yards. His biggest play may have come with his legs — a 21-yard scramble on third-and-3 during the decisive drive.

Fannin led Cleveland with seven catches for 51 yards and two scores.

The Browns’ defense was tough all day. They finished the job when Ronnie Hickman intercepted Bryce Young with nine seconds remaining.

Cleveland improves to 2–1 and now faces a quick turnaround before hosting division rival Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

Cleveland closed the regular season Sunday with a 3-2 loss to Kansas City, one day after locking up its third straight AL Central championship.

With several regulars getting the day off, the Guardians still produced nine hits. Daniel Schneeman and Jo Adell supplied the offense with solo home runs, while David Fry joined them with two hits. Parker Messick allowed one run over three innings before Austin Peterson worked five innings in his second major league appearance. Vinnie Pasquantino’s second homer of the day, in the eighth, broke a 2-2 tie.

The loss leaves Cleveland at 85-77, but the bigger story is what comes next.

Sunday’s other results finalized the path: Houston beat the Athletics 9-0 to win the AL West, while Texas lost 6-4 to Minnesota and was eliminated. That means the No. 3 Astros will host the No. 6 White Sox in a best-of-three Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday.

Cleveland, the AL’s No. 2 seed, receives a first-round bye and will host the winner in Game 1 of the AL Division Series on Saturday, October 3.
