College can be a great path. But for some young adults, a skilled career can offer another route to strong earnings, valuable credentials and work that is very much in demand.

For years, many students heard essentially one message after high school: go to college, earn a four-year degree and start a career.

College remains an excellent path for many students. But it isn't the only path to a good living — and some careers families once considered “alternatives” deserve consideration as a first choice.

Electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, industrial machinery mechanics, machinists, welders and other highly skilled workers can build careers through apprenticeships and technical education — sometimes earning a paycheck while they learn.

The opportunities aren't theoretical.

IBEW Local 673 and the Mentor Electrical JATC are located right here on Munson Road in Mentor. Its electrical apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with paid on-the-job training and progressive wage increases.

Nationally, median 2025 pay reached about $63,000 for electricians, $63,800 for plumbers and pipefitters, $64,100 for industrial machinery mechanics and related workers, and more than $95,000 for electrical power-line installers and repairers. Those aren't starting salaries, but they demonstrate why these careers deserve attention.

If the Mentor Channel has disappeared from your Spectrum lineup, the problem may not be your television.

The City of Mentor is reminding residents that some Spectrum customers who have switched to a newer digital box, the Spectrum app or a Xumo Stream Box may currently be unable to receive local public-access channels, including the Mentor Channel.

Residents still have several ways to watch.

The city’s free Mentor Channel app is available for Apple and Android devices as well as Roku and Amazon Fire. It streams the channel live in HD and provides access to previously aired programming.

Residents can also watch missed Mentor City Council and Municipal Planning Commission meetings online or through the Mentor Channel’s YouTube archive.

Traditional cable service remains available on Spectrum channel 1024 and AT&T U-Verse channel 99, although the city says those feeds are standard definition.

The city says Spectrum is working to make public, educational and government channels available through its app later in 2026.

Summer may have packed up, but Mentor definitely hasn’t.

The City of Mentor is reminding residents that plenty of local attractions and activities continue well beyond summer — and fall may be one of the best times to rediscover a few of them.

For an easy outdoor afternoon, Mentor’s 19 public parks and roughly 1,200 acres of parkland include fall favorites such as Wildwood Cultural Center, Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Veterans Park.

There’s also plenty to do indoors. The Mentor Community Recreation Center offers fitness, sports and recreation programs, while the Mentor Ice Arena schedules public skating throughout much of the year.

History fans can revisit the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, where admission and guided tours of the former president’s home are free. Or take your own driving tour along the Mentor History Trail to discover notable places around the city.

Golfers can check available tee times at Black Brook Golf Course, while residents 55 and older can find classes, activities, trips and social programs through the Mentor Senior Center.

And if it’s been a while since you explored your own hometown, this might be a good weekend to start.

A comfortable chair, an easy conversation and a host who actually sits down can matter far more than a flawless room.

A welcoming home rarely starts with spotless countertops, perfectly fluffed pillows or a room that looks untouched. More often, it starts with something much simpler: people feeling comfortable enough to settle in.

Most guests are not conducting an inspection. They notice whether there is an easy place to sit, whether they know where to put their coat, whether the room feels comfortable and whether the people hosting them seem genuinely glad they came.

That does not mean preparation is pointless. A quick reset can make a home feel easier to enjoy. Clear a few surfaces. Make sure the bathroom is presentable. Put away anything that creates obvious clutter or gets in the way. Check that there are enough seats, and make drinks or snacks easy to find.

Then stop.

There is a difference between preparing a home for people and preparing a home for judgment. One creates comfort. The other can leave the host distracted, apologizing for every unfinished project, stray toy or stack of mail.

A home that feels lived in can actually make guests more comfortable. A blanket draped over a chair, family photos, a book on the coffee table or evidence that real life happens there can make a room feel warmer rather than less polished.

The most welcoming hosts are usually present. They sit down. They join the conversation. They are not constantly disappearing to straighten something, refill something or explain why the house is not “quite ready.”

Hospitality does not require a showroom. It requires enough order for people to feel at ease and enough imperfection for them to feel they can relax.

The goal is not to make guests admire your home.

It is to make them feel at home while they are in it.

Mentor's girls volleyball team has a big conference test waiting tonight when Strongsville comes to town.

The Cardinals enter the matchup 7–4 overall and 4–0 in Greater Cleveland Conference play, while Strongsville brings a 13–1 record into Mentor. Mentor's most recent conference match ended in a 3–0 victory over Cleveland Heights.

With the Cardinals still unbeaten in GCC competition, tonight's match provides another opportunity to strengthen their position as the regular season moves into October.

Lake Catholic heads back onto the road tonight after another strong performance from senior Ahnna Bergant.

Bergant recorded 20 kills, 19 digs, two aces and a solo block as the Cougars defeated Beaumont, 3–1. Sophia Newland added 23 digs and two aces as Lake Catholic improved to 12–3.

The Cougars have now won back-to-back matches and remain one of the area's stronger volleyball teams as the schedule turns toward October.

Next up is a North Coast Conference road match against Holy Name.

The Mentor boys soccer team gets another Greater Cleveland Conference test tonight when Shaker Heights visits Mentor.

The Cardinals enter at 4–7 overall and 2–2 in conference play, but they'll be looking to build on some recent momentum after a convincing 6–2 road victory over Riverside.

Shaker Heights enters tonight's matchup at 7–2–1, giving Mentor an opportunity to pick up an important late-season conference result on its home field.
