📰 Ohio Dispensaries Set to Launch Recreational Marijuana Sales

Ohio Approves Recreational Marijuana Sales, Dispensaries Gear Up for Launch

On August 6th, 2024 dispensaries with the appropriate license can start selling recreational marijuana. Ohio has approved dual-use marijuana licenses, allowing dispensaries to sell recreational cannabis to the public. With this green light, dispensaries and customers are gearing up for the new market.

Nectar in Euclid is among the many dispensaries ready to welcome a broader customer base. Jimmy Dawson from Nectar highlighted that while the dispensary will continue to support its medical patients, they are prepared to meet the increased demand from recreational users.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Age Requirement: Customers must be at least 21 years old with a valid state ID or driver’s license.

  • Purchase Limits: Without a medical marijuana card, customers can buy a 10-day supply per 24 hours. For instance, a half-ounce of cannabis counts as five days' worth, and five packs of 100mg gummies also equate to a 10-day quota.

  • Product Variety: Dispensaries will offer a wide range of products, including flower, vaporizers, edibles (chocolates, gummies, lozenges, baked goods, tarts), and cooking essentials (sugar, olive oil).

Dawson advises new cannabis users to start with lower potency products to gauge their tolerance, similar to alcohol. He warns against "greening out," a term for consuming too much cannabis, which can cause nausea and dizziness.

Most dispensaries, including Nectar, operate on a cash-only basis, but have ATMs available on-site. All purchases are subject to a 10% state sales tax, though medical marijuana cardholders still receive priority service.

Customers are reminded never to drive under the influence of marijuana, as it can impair driving abilities and lead to accidents or legal consequences.

🍧Sensory-Friendly Fun at Mentor-on-the-Lake’s SnoBalls with Safety Forces

Pelican’s SnoBalls

Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Lt. Tina Messinger, a mother of a child with special needs, recently participated in a heartwarming community event. The city hosted its first SnoBalls with Safety Forces event, dedicated to the special needs community, with involvement from the police and fire departments. This event was organized in collaboration with Heroes Helping Those With Special Needs, a non-profit founded by Jenna Newman, who is also a parent to a severely autistic child.

The event aimed to foster connections between the special needs community and first responders, featuring activities like bubble play, music, playground fun, and tours of emergency vehicles, culminating in a treat from Pelican’s SnoBalls. The event was funded by community donations to the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Association specifically for special needs events.

Lt. Messinger emphasized the importance of such sensory-friendly events, noting that traditional safety events can be overwhelming for special needs individuals due to sirens, lights, and large crowds. By keeping the event small and sensory-friendly, it provided a more enjoyable experience for attendees.

Mentor-on-the-Lake also stands out as one of the few communities with an Autism/Special Needs Registry, which helps emergency responders provide better assistance during emergencies. The registry can be picked up at the police station or downloaded from the city’s website.

🍷Ohio’s Wine Sector Gets $100K Boost for 2024-2025 Promotions

Ohio has allocated $100,735 to promote its wine industry through a partnership with Great Lakes Publishing Co. The funding will support advertising, photography, and sponsorships, primarily benefiting Lake County’s Grand River Valley.

Much of the focus will be on Lake County, home to Ohio’s Grand River Valley. The funding will support cooperative print advertising in Cleveland Magazine and Ohio Magazine throughout 2024 and 2025. Additionally, there will be a cooperative photography program, sponsorship of the TourismOhio App, inclusion in the TourismOhio Travel Planner Map, and the creation of a Sip magazine along with the Ohio Wine Guide, which will be featured in the magazine.

🏠 Post-Pandemic High: Active Home Listings Jump 36.6% in July

Active home listings increased by 36.6% annually in July, reaching a post-pandemic high. The South saw the most significant growth, and Tampa led major U.S. markets with a 94.9% rise in listings. The median time on the market increased to 50 days, and the share of price-reduced listings rose to 18.9%. This trend suggests a shift toward a more buyer-friendly market, providing potential home buyers with more options and possibly lower prices.

📉 Mortgage Rates Hit Lowest Levels in Over a Year

Mortgage rates have dropped by 40 to 80 basis points, providing a temporary relief to borrowers. This decline has led to increased interest from buyers and those looking to refinance. Rates are now in the high 5% to low 6% range for government loans and mid-6% range for conventional loans. Industry experts are cautiously optimistic, noting that while the lower rates are beneficial, they do not solve the ongoing housing inventory issue.

Orioles Overpower Guardians with Henderson's Homer and Rutschman's RBIs

The Baltimore Orioles triumphed over the MLB-leading Cleveland Guardians with a 9-5 victory on Sunday. Key contributions came from Gunnar Henderson, who hit a two-run homer, and Adley Rutschman, who drove in three runs.

Henderson’s home run, his 29th of the season, came in the fourth inning against Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams, extending the Orioles' lead to 6-2. Earlier in the same inning, rookie Jackson Holliday hit a solo home run, aiding Baltimore in splitting the four-game series.

Eloy Jiménez had a standout performance with three hits, while Colton Cowser continued his impressive form by extending his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the Orioles' rookie record set by Trey Mancini in 2017. This victory placed Baltimore in a tie with the New York Yankees at the top of the AL East.

On the pitching front, Corbin Burnes secured his third consecutive win, marking his 1,000th career strikeout. The right-hander pitched for five innings, conceding a season-high five runs, four of which were earned, and striking out four batters.

Cleveland's Josh Naylor hit a significant three-run homer measuring 420 feet, and Steven Kwan contributed with two singles and two stolen bases. Despite this loss, the Guardians have won five of their last seven games and boast the best home record in baseball at 35-17.
