⚡ Thousands in Northeast Ohio Still Without Power Nearly a Week After Tornadoes
Nearly 99% of all Mentor homes now have power. However, many across NE Ohio are not as fortunate. Nearly a week after severe storms and tornadoes tore through Northeast Ohio, thousands of residents remain without power, anxiously waiting for restoration crews to fulfill their promise of restoring service by Wednesday, August 14. The prolonged outage, which began on Tuesday night for some, has stretched into its sixth day, leaving many frustrated and struggling without basic amenities.
University Heights has been particularly hard-hit. The community had reduced the number of homes without power to 205 by Sunday, but hopes were dashed on Monday morning when another transformer failure plunged several hundred more homes into darkness. Mayor Michael Dylan Brennan reported that over 600 homes in the area were still without power as of Monday, noting, "We are not out of the woods yet, unfortunately."
The National Weather Service confirmed that five tornadoes touched down in the region, exacerbating the damage and complicating power restoration efforts. Among those affected on Monday was Rebecca Nurse, who expressed relief that her home had initially been spared, only to lose power days later. "We were so grateful to God that we didn’t lose power until now," she said.
In Cuyahoga County, over 2,000 residents remained without electricity as of Monday afternoon. The outages have been scattered, with most impacting fewer than 20 customers at a time across Lorain, Geauga, and Cuyahoga counties. Those affected have been lining up outside the Zelma Watson George Community Center in Cleveland, where FirstEnergy is distributing water and ice.
Some, like Dot Garner of Willoughby, are staying with relatives and holding out hope that power will be restored before the initial Wednesday projection. Others, like Vondra Hill of Cleveland, have already had their power restored but are dealing with the aftermath. "I just threw away a large bag of spoiled food, and I had just gone grocery shopping," Hill said.
Communities including Willoughby, Chesterland, Cleveland, Lakewood, Parma Heights, and Brook Park are all hopeful that restoration efforts will be completed sooner than expected. Mayor Brennan noted that local resources like showers at the pool and charging stations at libraries have been made available to help those without power. Despite the challenges, FirstEnergy remains optimistic, expecting the majority of the outages to be resolved before midnight on Monday.

🏘️ DIY Electrical Troubleshooting: What to Check Before Calling a Pro
How to Troubleshoot Common Electrical Problems
As we’ve all found out of late, electrical issues can be frustrating. However, unlike a major community-wide power outage, many common problems can be resolved with a bit of basic troubleshooting. Here's a guide to help you identify and fix some of the most frequent electrical issues in your home. Remember, safety comes first—if you're unsure about anything, it's best to call a professional.
1. Power Outages
If the power goes out in a specific area of your home, it's likely due to a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Head to your electrical panel to check if any breakers have flipped to the "off" position. If you find one, switch it back to "on." For homes with fuses, replace the blown fuse with one of the same rating.
If the power outage affects your entire home or neighborhood, the issue is likely with your utility provider. In this case, contact them for more information.
2. Flickering Lights
Flickering lights can be caused by a variety of issues, including loose bulbs, poor wiring, or overloaded circuits. Start by tightening the bulb to ensure it's securely in place. If that doesn’t fix the problem, check the light fixture for any signs of wear or damage. If multiple lights flicker when appliances are running, your circuit may be overloaded, which could require an upgrade by a professional.
3. Dead Outlets
A dead outlet can be the result of a tripped circuit, a blown fuse, or a faulty outlet. First, test the outlet by plugging in another device. If it doesn’t work, check your circuit breaker panel for tripped breakers. Resetting a tripped breaker may solve the issue. If the problem persists, the outlet itself may need replacing, which should be done by a licensed electrician.
4. Light Switches Not Working
If a light switch isn’t working, the problem could be with the switch itself or the wiring. A common cause is a loose connection inside the switch box. While replacing a light switch is a relatively simple task, it’s essential to ensure the power is off before attempting any work. If you're not comfortable working with electrical wiring, it’s safer to have a professional handle the job.
When to Call a Professional
While these basic troubleshooting steps can help solve common electrical problems, some issues require more expertise. If you encounter a problem that seems complex or you're unsure about how to proceed, it's wise to contact a local professional electrician. They can ensure your home's electrical system is safe and up to code, preventing potential hazards.

⚾ Noel's Two Homers, Naylor's Clutch Single Power Guardians Past Cubs
The Cleveland Guardians pulled off a dramatic 9-8 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, thanks to Josh Naylor's clutch tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and a standout performance from rookie Jhonkensy Noel, who homered twice.
Cleveland found themselves in a back-and-forth contest, initially trailing 3-0 before surging ahead 8-3. However, the Cubs fought back, tying the game with a five-run outburst between the seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Jose Ramirez set the stage with a leadoff double against Chicago's Julian Merryweather. Will Brennan followed with a pinch-hit single, advancing Ramirez to third. Naylor then delivered a decisive grounder that skipped past third baseman Isaac Paredes, giving the Guardians the lead once again.
Earlier in the game, Naylor contributed another key hit, an RBI single that brought in Cleveland's first run. Noel, showcasing his power, blasted a three-run homer off Cubs All-Star Shota Imanaga in the fourth inning, propelling the Guardians to a four-run frame. Steven Kwan added to the offense with a two-run homer during a three-run fifth inning, helping Cleveland secure their third consecutive win after a seven-game losing streak.
Emmanuel Clase secured the win by earning his 36th save, his third in as many days, which ended the Cubs' four-game winning streak.
For Noel, it was a milestone night, as the rookie hit his first career multi-homer game, bringing his total to eight home runs in 31 games.
