📰 Lake County Unveils First-Ever State of the County Report for Community Transparency

Lake County, Ohio

Lake County Administrator Jason Boyd and Commissioner John Plecnik recently presented the county’s first “State of the County” report, a new initiative to increase transparency and keep residents informed. Established by a resolution in July, the report offers a comprehensive look at accomplishments, ongoing challenges, and future projects across key areas, including public safety, economic development, and infrastructure.

Boyd highlighted the county’s robust economic base, with a focus on manufacturing, retail, and growth in eastern Lake County's nurseries and wineries. He also reviewed the county's financial standing, noting the 2024 general fund budget of $70.2 million, supported by a 1 percent sales tax, with 65 percent allocated to law enforcement, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the courts.

The report concludes with details about key county services, such as Job and Family Services and public safety. Plecnik and fellow commissioners emphasized the report's role in promoting open governance and encouraging community collaboration on local issues.

Copies of the “State of the County” report are available online and at county offices.

🏘️ Simple Home Care Tips to Protect Your Investment Year-Round

Taking care of your home is one of the best ways to protect your investment and ensure your living space is safe, comfortable, and efficient. For local homeowners, here are some key home maintenance tips that can help you stay on top of things year-round, save on repair costs, and add value to your property.

1. Inspect Your Roof and Gutters: Checking your roof for missing shingles, damaged flashing, or leaks is essential, especially before winter. Additionally, cleaning out your gutters prevents water from pooling, which can lead to foundation issues and basement leaks. Gutters should be cleaned twice a year to ensure they direct water away from your home.

2. Maintain Your HVAC System: An efficient heating and cooling system is crucial for comfort and energy savings. Replace your HVAC filters every 1-3 months, depending on usage, and schedule a professional inspection at least once a year. Regular maintenance helps keep the system running efficiently and can extend its lifespan, saving you money in the long run.

3. Seal Doors and Windows: Drafty doors and windows can significantly impact your energy bills. Inspect for gaps or cracks, and use caulk or weatherstripping to seal any issues. This simple step can improve insulation and keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

4. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Your family’s safety depends on functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them every month, replace batteries at least once a year, and consider upgrading to models with long-life batteries. This small task can have a huge impact on your home's safety.

5. Keep an Eye on Plumbing: Leaks can lead to expensive water damage. Regularly check under sinks and around appliances for signs of moisture, and fix any small leaks promptly. If you notice a spike in your water bill, it might be worth calling a plumber to investigate.

Wrap-Up: Regular home maintenance can seem daunting, but creating a seasonal checklist can make it manageable. By addressing these small tasks, you can keep your home in excellent condition, minimize costly repairs, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from a well-maintained property.

🏀 Cavaliers Extend Unbeaten Streak to 12, Outlast Bulls in Fourth-Quarter Surge

The Cleveland Cavaliers continued their remarkable unbeaten start to the season with a 119-113 victory over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. The win secured their 12-0 record, making them the only undefeated team in the NBA this season and marking the best season start in franchise history. This achievement places them among just seven teams in NBA history to start a season with 12 consecutive wins or more, a feat last matched by the Golden State Warriors in 2015-16.

Donovan Mitchell was pivotal in keeping the Cavaliers competitive early on, racking up 25 points in the first half, including five 3-pointers and a stunning 360-degree layup. Though Chicago surged in the third quarter to build a nine-point lead, the Cavaliers quickly countered with an 11-2 run, reclaiming control by the end of the period. In the fourth, with the Bulls tying the game midway, Mitchell and Evan Mobley responded, leading a 9-2 run that gave Cleveland the final edge.

Mitchell finished with 36 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, while Darius Garland added 17 points and five assists. Evan Mobley contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulls were led by Zach LaVine with 26 points and Nikola Vucevic with 20, but their 20 turnovers, converted by Cleveland into 35 points, proved costly.

The Cavaliers now prepare to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, where a win could tie the franchise's longest winning streak.
