📰 Community Reflects on Lives Lost in Mentor Green Shooting One Year Later
A year has passed since the tragic events at Mentor Green Mobile Estates, where an active shooter claimed four lives, including his own. The shooting on November 16, 2023, left the tight-knit community reeling and marked a somber chapter in Mentor’s history.
The gunman, a 47-year-old resident named Jason Norris, carried out the attack after receiving an eviction notice earlier that day. He fatally shot property manager Laura Colon, 62, along with residents Terrance Mathis, Sr., 63, and Thomas Galiza, before taking his own life. Another individual was injured but recovered after brief hospitalization.
One elderly resident who lived near the shooter recounts the terror of that day. After witnessing his neighbor’s heroic but fatal attempt to help the property manager, he sought shelter inside the neighbor’s home. Despite the chaos, Mentor Police arrived just two minutes after the initial 911 call, swiftly evacuating 30 residents and securing the area with the help of SWAT teams.
The aftermath of the incident lingers. Trailer 84, where the shooter lived, remains on the property with shattered windows serving as a stark and painful reminder of the tragedy. For many, including survivors and first responders, the day is etched in memory—a reminder of loss, resilience, and the community’s collective strength.

🏠 Mortgage Rates Stabilize: What Homebuyers Need to Know in 2025
Mortgage rates appear to be stabilizing following recent volatility, offering a potential glimmer of hope for homebuyers and sellers. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in the U.S. dipped slightly to 6.78% for the week ending Nov. 14, according to Freddie Mac data.
Jessica Lautz from the National Association of Realtors notes that rate stability is crucial. "When rates are moving around a lot, it creates uncertainty in the market," she explained. The rates declined earlier in the fall but jumped after the recent election, driven by market expectations of potential economic changes.
Experts predict mortgage rates will likely remain in the 6% range through early 2025. James Tobin from the National Association of Home Builders attributes rate fluctuations to market perceptions of potential inflationary policies, including government spending and tax considerations.
Chen Zhao from Redfin highlights that more stable rates benefit homebuyers by providing predictability in budgeting. The current environment presents unique opportunities for different market participants:
Buyers may find less competition during winter months
Current homeowners could explore refinancing if rates have dropped significantly
Potential sellers might offset higher borrowing costs with larger down payments
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggests that strong economic growth allows policymakers flexibility in managing interest rates. While future rate cuts remain uncertain, any reduction in the federal funds rate could indirectly pressure mortgage rates downward.
Homeowners have seen substantial equity growth, with net homeowner equity reaching over $17.6 trillion in the second quarter of 2024 - a $1.3 trillion increase from the previous year.
For those considering refinancing, experts recommend carefully examining current rates and associated costs. Refinancing typically involves expenses between 2% and 6% of the loan amount.

🏀 Cavs Dominate Hornets, Extend Historic Start to 15-0
The Cleveland Cavaliers continued their historic start to the season, defeating the Charlotte Hornets 128-114 on Sunday night to improve to 15-0. Darius Garland led the way with 25 points, while Ty Jerome stepped up with a career-high-tying 24 points in place of Donovan Mitchell, who rested for the matchup.
With the victory, the Cavs are tied for the second-best start in NBA history, matching the 1993-94 Houston Rockets and 1948-49 Washington Capitols. Only the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who opened their season 24-0, boast a better start.
Evan Mobley added 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Jarrett Allen contributed 21 points and 15 boards. This marked just the second time in franchise history that Cleveland had four 20-point scorers in consecutive games, a feat last achieved in 1972.
Cleveland’s offensive efficiency shined, shooting an impressive 67% from the field in the first half. Ty Jerome not only delivered on the scoreboard but also tied his career-best with eight assists, stepping up admirably in Mitchell's absence.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized the importance of maintaining a long-term approach during this early-season success. Resting Mitchell, who had just dropped 37 points in the previous game, was part of the Cavs' strategy to ensure sustained health and performance throughout the season.
The Cavaliers’ streak faces its toughest test yet on Tuesday when they meet the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics. It will be just the fourth time in NBA history that a team with a 15-plus game win streak faces the reigning champions.

🏈 Browns Collapse in Fourth Quarter, Fall to Saints 35-14
The Cleveland Browns’ struggles continued in Week 11 as they fell to the New Orleans Saints, 35-14. After entering the fourth quarter tied at 14, the Browns’ defense was overwhelmed by the explosive playmaking of Saints’ versatile weapon Taysom Hill, who scored three unanswered touchdowns. The loss drops Cleveland to 2-8 on the season.
Key Moments: Missed Opportunities Define First Half
The Browns’ first half was marked by miscues despite promising moments. Denzel Ward delivered a standout performance with two takeaways, including an interception and a fumble recovery, but the offense couldn’t capitalize.
Jerry Jeudy Shines: Jameis Winston connected with Jeudy for an 89-yard touchdown in the first quarter, showcasing Jeudy’s speed on his way to his first 100-yard game as a Brown.
Missed Kicks: Kicker Dustin Hopkins struggled, missing three field goals, including a 32-yarder set up by a Saints penalty.
Fourth-Down Gamble: On their opening drive, the Browns failed to convert on fourth-and-1, setting the tone for missed opportunities.
Cleveland entered halftime with only six points despite racking up 254 total yards.
Fourth-Quarter Collapse
After a strong start, the Browns’ defense unraveled in the fourth quarter. Taysom Hill proved unstoppable, racking up 138 rushing yards and three touchdowns. His 33-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 gave the Saints a decisive lead early in the quarter, and a 75-yard sprint sealed the game.
The Saints’ offensive versatility proved too much for the Browns, with Alvin Kamara contributing 89 total yards and a touchdown. The defense surrendered five rushing plays of 10 or more yards and struggled to contain Hill’s dual-threat abilities.
Offensive Highlights and Struggles
Winston’s 395 passing yards and two touchdowns were overshadowed by the team’s inability to maintain momentum. He displayed strong connections with Jeudy and David Njoku, who caught nine passes for 81 yards. However, the offense faltered late, gaining just 92 yards in the fourth quarter and turning the ball over on downs to end any comeback hopes. With their playoff hopes fading, the Browns will aim to regroup as they prepare for Week 12. Despite Winston’s promising individual performance, Cleveland needs a complete team effort to turn the season around.
