šŸˆ Cardinalsā€™ Stellar Season Concludes with Narrow Loss to St. Edward

Thank you to the Mentor Cardinals for an Exciting Season!

On a rain-soaked evening at Bedford Bearcat Stadium, Mentorā€™s football team saw its remarkable season come to a close on Nov. 22 in a Division I regional final. St. Edward edged out the Cardinals, 13-7, in a tightly contested battle, ending Mentorā€™s dream season at 13-1.

A Tale of Two Plays

Mentor started strong with senior quarterback Scotty Fox breaking free for a 31-yard touchdown run on the teamā€™s opening drive. However, St. Edwardā€™s senior running back Bradley Eaton delivered two explosive scoring runs of 80 and 67 yards late in the first quarter and early in the second. Those two plays ultimately proved to be the deciding factor.

Mentorā€™s defense responded admirably, holding the Eagles scoreless in the second half. The Cardinals made key fourth-down stops and forced multiple punts, but their offense couldnā€™t capitalize on several opportunities to retake the lead.

Close Calls in Key Moments

Late in the second quarter, Mentor advanced to the St. Edward 27-yard line, but a pass to the end zone as time expired fell incomplete. Another promising drive in the third quarter ended when Foxā€™s fourth-down run came up just short. In the fourth quarter, Mentor reached the Eaglesā€™ 10-yard line, but a missed field goal thwarted their hopes of tying the game.

With under three minutes remaining, Mentorā€™s defense gave them one last chance after forcing a St. Edward punt. Fox connected with Jackson Farley for a 25-yard gain to cross midfield, but a critical interception by St. Edwardā€™s defensive lineman Colton Fee sealed the game.

Season of Achievements

Despite the loss, Mentorā€™s 2024 season was nothing short of extraordinary. The Cardinals finished 13-1, went undefeated in the regular season, won the Greater Cleveland Conference outright, and were ranked No. 1 in Ohioā€™s Division I.

Fox, who will continue his football career at West Virginia University, reflected on the season with pride. ā€œIt was amazing. I couldnā€™t ask for a better group of guys. I love every one of these guys, and Iā€™m gonna miss them.ā€

Looking Ahead

St. Edward advances to face Olentangy Liberty in the state semifinal on Nov. 29. Mentorā€™s seniors, meanwhile, leave a lasting legacy, cementing this season as one of the best in the programā€™s history.
