📰 Mentor City Offices Closed November 28-29 for Thanksgiving Holiday

City of Mentor
City offices in Mentor, Ohio, will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead for any services or assistance they may need, as normal operations will resume on Monday, December 2.
✈️ Thanksgiving Travel Soars to Record Highs with 80 Million on the Move
As Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, both airports and highways are bracing for a surge in travelers, with 2024 poised to set new records for holiday travel. Nearly 80 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home, with most choosing to drive.
For air travelers, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is predicting its busiest Thanksgiving ever, with an estimated 18.3 million passengers passing through U.S. airports over the holiday week. The peak day is expected to be Sunday, with over 3 million travelers projected, possibly breaking records set earlier this year. TSA officials assure passengers that adequate staffing is in place to keep lines moving efficiently.
However, challenges remain. A worker strike at Charlotte Douglas International Airport has disrupted operations at one of the busiest hubs in the Carolinas. Meanwhile, a shortage of air traffic controllers continues to loom, potentially causing delays despite efforts by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to manage traffic flow.
On the roads, travelers can expect some relief at the pump, with gas prices averaging $3.06 per gallon nationally, down from $3.27 a year ago. Traffic patterns are shifting, with many spreading out their trips across several days thanks to remote work flexibility. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are predicted to be the most congested for drivers, while Thanksgiving Day itself should see lighter traffic.
Experts advise travelers to plan ahead, arrive early at airports, and avoid peak driving times for smoother holiday journeys.

📰 Concord Township Man Sentenced to Life for Girlfriend’s Murder
A Concord Township man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to the murder of his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in their home earlier this year. Brian K. Doerner, 53, pleaded guilty to the April 12 killing of Debra Moore and received his sentence on Friday in Lake County court. He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
Lake County sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on the 7200 block of Lochness Drive, where Moore's body was found in an upstairs bedroom. The following day, Doerner was arrested and later indicted on nine charges, including aggravated murder, kidnapping, and strangulation.
Court documents revealed that the incident stemmed from a domestic argument. Doerner reportedly became enraged after Moore decided against accompanying him on a planned trip to Florida. According to the case file, he followed her to the bedroom, strangling her until she lost consciousness and ultimately died. Following the act, Doerner was described as being in shock and covered Moore's body with a pillow.
Doerner initially faced a jury trial scheduled for November 8 but accepted a plea deal on October 24. This agreement led to his conviction for aggravated murder, sparing him a lengthier trial process.

🏘️ Smart Ways to Protect Your Home: Simple Tips to Deter Burglars
Protecting your home from burglars doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. From investing in security systems to adopting simple habits, there are numerous ways to enhance your home’s security and keep your family safe. By taking proactive measures, you can deter potential intruders and secure vulnerable areas of your home.
Strengthen Key Entry Points
The most common entry points for break-ins are front doors, first-floor windows, back doors, garage doors, and basements. Keeping these areas secure is critical. Start by ensuring all doors and windows are locked, even if you feel safe in your neighborhood. Consider installing smart locks that automatically lock when doors are closed.
For added protection, reinforce doors and windows with stronger locks and hardware. For garages, always keep doors closed and locked, and consider unplugging the opener when on vacation. Adding tilt sensors or motion-activated floodlights can further improve garage security.
Invest in a Security System
A security system is one of the most effective deterrents against burglars. Research shows that the presence of a system discourages many intruders from attempting a break-in. Modern systems offer features such as video monitoring, remote access, and emergency notifications. Even if a system is beyond your budget, security cameras alone can provide significant protection by monitoring your property and providing evidence if needed.
Smart and Affordable Hacks
Get a Dog or Pretend You Have One: A “Beware of Dog” sign or dog bowl can deter burglars who prefer to avoid confrontations with animals.
Secure Your Wi-Fi: Protect your smart home devices by setting up firewalls, using strong passwords, and keeping your antivirus software updated.
Hide Keys Wisely: Avoid obvious spots like under mats or rocks. Instead, use a lockbox or trust a neighbor with a spare.
Use Timed or Motion-Activated Lights: Well-lit homes are less attractive to burglars. Solar-powered and automated lighting can brighten dark areas and add convenience.
Involve Your Community
Getting to know your neighbors and setting up a neighborhood watch program can greatly improve safety. Together, you can keep an eye on each other’s properties and address concerns like abandoned houses or unkempt yards that may attract crime.
Plan Ahead
Create a family security plan that includes locking routines, alarm system usage, and emergency procedures. Before vacations, avoid advertising your absence on social media and use smart lighting to simulate activity at home.
Protect Valuables
Invest in a safe for important documents and items. Choose a heavy, bolted safe with fireproof and waterproof features for added security.
Stay Vigilant
Look out for suspicious activity, such as unfamiliar vehicles or door-to-door solicitors. These can be signs of someone casing your property. Report anything unusual to local authorities.
Bottom Line
Securing your home can be simple and even enjoyable, especially with easy-to-implement tips and modern technology. From securing doors and windows to investing in a reliable security system, these measures provide peace of mind and a safer home for you and your family.
