🧊 Bitter Cold Ahead: Enbridge Gas Ohio Shares Winter Safety & Assistance Tips

With temperatures expected to plummet into the single digits next week, Enbridge Gas Ohio is reminding residents to take precautions to ensure their safety and maintain their natural gas service.

Winter Gas Safety Tips

As extreme cold weather increases the risk of carbon monoxide buildup and gas-related hazards, homeowners should take the following steps:

  • Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Place detectors on every level of the home, particularly within 10 feet of sleeping areas. Check and replace batteries regularly.

  • Inspect Gas Appliances Annually – A yearly professional inspection of heating systems and appliances can prevent potential carbon monoxide leaks.

  • Turn Off Fireplaces at Night – Gas logs and fireplaces should be extinguished before going to bed to reduce risks.

  • Report Gas Leaks Immediately – If there is a natural gas odor inside or outside the home, evacuate and call 911 and Enbridge Gas (877-542-2630) from a safe location.

  • Keep Meters and Vents Clear – Snow and ice buildup on gas meters can affect pressure regulation, posing safety risks. Clear snow by hand and avoid piling snow against meters or exhaust vents to prevent carbon monoxide accumulation inside the home.

  • Use Supplemental Heaters and Generators Safely – Never use stoves or ovens to heat a home. Generators should always be operated outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Assistance Programs Available

For those struggling with heating costs, Enbridge Gas Ohio offers several programs to help residents stay warm this winter, including:

  • Payment Plans & Budget Billing – Options to manage energy costs over time.

  • Winter Crisis Program & Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) – Aid for households facing financial hardship.

  • Housewarming Program – Weatherization assistance to improve energy efficiency.

  • EnergyShare® Program – A last-resort fuel assistance program for those in need.

More details on these programs can be found on the Enbridge Gas Ohio website, or by calling customer service at 1-800-362-7557.

🎣 Cold Snap Brings Solid Ice for Fishing—Best Spots in Northeast Ohio

Ice fishing enthusiasts in Northeast Ohio are finally getting their chance to hit the frozen lakes as solid ice conditions begin to form. With single-digit temperatures expected next week, many lakes and ponds are expected to develop safe ice for fishing—a welcome change after several years of inconsistent winter conditions.

Exercise Caution on the Ice

While ice thickness is improving, not all areas are safe just yet. Anglers should ensure the ice is at least four inches thick before venturing out on foot. For snowmobiles and ATVs, a minimum of five inches of solid ice is required. Ice conditions can vary, so it's crucial to test the thickness frequently.

Cleveland Metroparks Stocked with Trout

The Cleveland Metroparks have recently stocked rainbow trout, including trophy-sized fish, in several area lakes. Anglers are having success using small jigging spoons, Rapala Jigging Raps, and suspended ice jigs tipped with maggots, waxworms, or nightcrawler pieces.
Stocked Metroparks lakes include:

  • Wallace Lake

  • Shadow Lake

  • Ledge Lake

  • Judge’s Lake

  • Ranger Lake

Other great ice fishing locations in the region include Mosquito, Pymatuning, Punderson, and LaDue Reservoirs.

Lake Erie’s South Bass Island Draws Walleye Anglers

With ice forming around South Bass Island, Griffing Flying Service has already begun ferrying eager fishermen to the area, where they’re targeting walleye and yellow perch. As ice continues to thicken, more anglers are expected to arrive for prime fishing conditions.

For those looking to stay for an extended fishing trip, restaurants and hotels in Put-in-Bay remain open. Round-trip airfare to South Bass Island is $100, and anglers can book flights through Griffing Air Service (419-734-5400 or flygriffing.com).
