📰 Mentor Schools Kindergarten Registration Begins March 1
Kindergarten registration for the 2025-2026 school year will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, for children who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2025.
Registration must be completed by a custodial parent or legal guardian residing within the Mentor Public Schools district. A child cannot be registered by a non-custodial relative or individual without legal custody.

🧊 Winter 2025: Lake Erie Ice Reaches Peak of 92%
Each winter, as temperatures drop, the Great Lakes begin to freeze, with ice coverage varying greatly from year to year. Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes at 210 feet at its deepest point, is typically the first to develop ice. Its western basin, with an average depth of less than 30 feet, tends to freeze over first.
This winter started slowly for Lake Erie’s ice formation. In December 2024, ice coverage reached just 3%. By January, however, the lake quickly transformed. On Jan. 1, ice coverage was 0%, but by Jan. 31, it surged to 75%, peaking at 92%—the highest since 2022, which saw 93.8%.
Since records began in 1973, Lake Erie has reached 100% ice coverage three times: in 1978, 1979, and 1996. The highest coverage in recent years was 98.1% in 2015, while the lowest recorded peak was just 5.4% in 1998.
📰 Mentor School Board Seeks Library Trustee Applicants
The Mentor School Board is seeking applicants to fill a vacant position on the Mentor Public Library Board of Trustees. The term ends Dec. 31, 2025, with an option for reappointment through 2032. Applications are due Feb. 26, and interviews will be held on March 3. The board plans to appoint the new trustee at its March 11 meeting.
