🔥House Fire in Mentor: Quick-Thinking Driver Rescues 82-Year-Old Woman

A quick-thinking Uber driver helped save an 82-year-old woman from a house fire on Dartmoor Road near State Route 306 in Mentor.

The driver, Matthew Certain, was finishing a drop-off in the neighborhood when he spotted flames emerging from a garage late Wednesday night. Without hesitation, he parked his car and rushed to the home, banging on the door to alert the resident inside. The woman, identified as Roberta Winston, had just returned from a church service an hour earlier. Thanks to Certain’s actions, she was able to escape unharmed before the fire spread further.

Firefighters arrived shortly after and battled the flames for several hours. Mentor Fire Chief Ronald Zak praised Certain for his quick response, noting that the situation could have been far worse if help had arrived later.

The fire severely damaged the home, leaving it uninhabitable. Roberta is currently staying with her son, David Winston, who lives nearby. Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Certain, who happened to be in the right place at the right time, remained humble about his heroic actions, simply stating, “I’m just glad she got out safe.”
