🐕 DIY vs. Professional Dog Grooming: Which Option Is Right for You?
Professional Dog Grooming vs. DIY: Weighing the Pros and Cons
Deciding whether to groom your dog at home or seek the help of a professional dog groomer is an important choice for pet owners. Both options come with advantages and drawbacks, and selecting the right approach depends on factors like budget, time, and your dog's specific needs.
Pros of Professional Dog Grooming
✅ Expertise & Experience – Professional groomers are trained to handle different breeds and coat types, ensuring safe and effective grooming.
✅ Access to High-Quality Tools – Grooming salons use professional-grade clippers, brushes, and shampoos tailored to your pet’s needs.
✅ Safety & Stress Reduction – Experienced groomers know how to handle anxious or uncooperative dogs, reducing the risk of injury or stress.
Cons of Professional Dog Grooming
❌ Costly Services – Regular grooming appointments can be expensive, especially for dogs requiring frequent trims.
❌ Scheduling & Travel – Booking appointments and driving to a salon may be inconvenient for busy pet owners.
Pros of DIY Dog Grooming
✅ Cost Savings – Grooming at home eliminates salon fees, making it a budget-friendly option.
✅ Convenience – No need to schedule appointments or travel—groom your pet at a time that suits you.
✅ Bonding Opportunity – Grooming at home can strengthen your relationship with your pet, making them feel more comfortable.
Cons of DIY Dog Grooming
❌ Lack of Expertise – Without proper training, you may struggle with techniques, potentially causing discomfort to your pet.
❌ Time-Consuming & Messy – Grooming takes patience and effort, especially for breeds with thick coats.
❌ Challenging Tasks – Nail trimming and ear cleaning require precision and experience to avoid injury.
Key Factors to Consider
Your dog’s breed & coat type – Some breeds require professional expertise for proper grooming.
Your dog's temperament – An anxious or aggressive dog may be safer in a groomer's hands.
Your schedule & lifestyle – A busy schedule may make professional grooming a more practical choice.
Your budget – DIY grooming saves money, but professional services ensure expert care.
Your confidence & skill level – If you're unsure, consider taking a basic grooming course or consulting a vet.
Both options have their merits, and the right choice depends on your circumstances and your pet’s well-being. If you’re uncertain, speaking with a professional groomer or veterinarian can help you decide the best grooming approach for your furry companion.

🏀 Mentor’s Season Ends as Whitmer Pulls Away in District Semifinal
Mentor Falls to Whitmer in District Semifinal After Second-Half Surge
For one half, Mentor held its own against Toledo Whitmer, last year’s Division I state semifinalist, in a district semifinal matchup on February 26. The Cardinals entered halftime down just 30-26, and an early third-quarter surge tied the game at 32-32 after a layup by freshman Jack Kennedy.
But from there, the game slipped away. Whitmer took control with a 17-2 run, fueled by defensive stops, transition buckets, and dominant play inside. The Panthers pulled away and ended Mentor’s season with an 81-54 victory.
Whitmer’s Key Players Shine
Antione West (Purdue commit) led Whitmer with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half.
Andre Young added 18 points, while Makhi Leach (Bowling Green commit) had 15.
Charles Johnson contributed 13 points in the win.
Shooting Woes Hurt Mentor
The Cardinals struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 3 of 27 three-point attempts—all from Kennedy. Mentor coach Bob Krizancic acknowledged shooting as a season-long weakness, which proved costly against a fast, physical Whitmer team.
Strong First Half, Tough Finish
Mentor stayed competitive early, trailing just 17-16 after one quarter and briefly taking an 18-17 lead in the second. Whitmer’s ability to convert second-chance points and free throws allowed them to stay ahead until their third-quarter run sealed the game.
Kennedy led Mentor with 15 points, while Tony Katava (12 points) and Kobe Frasure-Azzano (11 points) contributed offensively.
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss, Krizancic remained optimistic about the program’s future. Mentor finishes the season 15-7, marking the program’s 29th consecutive winning season. The team will lose seven seniors, including Frasure-Azzano, but Kennedy and a promising freshman class give hope for a strong return next year.
Whitmer advances to play Brunswick in the district final on March 1 at Akron North.
