Mentor Hiring Seasonal Workers for Summer 2024

The City of Mentor is gearing up for a busy summer season and is seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill hundreds of part-time positions. These roles are essential in keeping the city's pools, parks, and summer camps running smoothly, ensuring residents can enjoy a variety of recreational activities.

Both teens and adults are encouraged to apply for a range of opportunities, including lifeguards, camp staff, maintenance aides, cashiers, and special event attendants. Additional positions include assistant pool managers, water safety instructors, a Learn to Swim director, and a recreation intern. Roles are available at Civic Center Park, Wildwood Cultural Center, Mentor Lagoons Marina, and other city facilities.

📰 Longtime Mentor Police Dispatcher Millard Woods Passed Away February 23, 2025.

The City of Mentor is mourning the loss of Millard Woods, a longtime public servant who passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Woods joined the Mentor Police Department as a full-time dispatcher on April 12, 1999, and dedicated more than two decades to serving the community. He retired on December 30, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, professionalism, and kindness.

Known for his sharp sense of humor and unwavering dedication, Woods was a beloved colleague and friend. Beyond his work, he was also famous for his exceptional BBQ skills, which brought joy to many.

His passing is deeply felt by family, friends, coworkers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The community extends its thoughts and prayers to his loved ones during this difficult time.

📰 Mentor Board of Building & Zoning Appeals to Review Variance Requests on March 11

The Mentor Municipal Board of Building and Zoning Appeals will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Mentor Council Chambers, 8500 Civic Center Blvd., Mentor, Ohio.

The following variance requests will be reviewed:

• LAAD Sign & Lighting, Inc. & Creekside Associates LLC (9571 Mentor Avenue, PP16-B-054-C-00-002-0): Requesting a variance to Sec. 1171.18(e)(3) of the Mentor Code of Ordinances to permit a 26.65-square-foot rear wall sign, which is otherwise prohibited in the B-2, General Business District.

• Malorie Milo (7290 Hawthorne Drive, PP16-C-068-B-00-050-0): Requesting a variance to Sec. 1155.01(b) of the Mentor Code of Ordinances to allow a home/garage addition with a 28.89-foot rear setback, instead of the minimum 50-foot rear setback required in the R-2, Single Family Residential District.

Residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend and provide input.

For those who prefer assistance, RITA offers a drop-off service for tax return preparation. Taxpayers can print an Individual Municipal Tax Drop-Off Sheet from the website, attach necessary documents, and submit them at designated RITA locations, including the Mentor Municipal Center Lobby.

For the first time in program history, the Mentor Cardinals are headed to the state semifinals after a dominant 4-0 victory over University in the Kent District final. The long-awaited breakthrough came yesterday, as Mentor executed a near-flawless defensive game plan and capitalized on key offensive opportunities to punch its ticket to the Frozen Four.

A.J. Trobenter set the tone early with a short-handed goal in the first period, despite Mentor being outshot 10-4. The Cardinals continued their efficient play in the second, with Jake Mackey adding to the lead. Beckett Swinehart and Joe Mackey sealed the win with third-period goals, while goaltender Ryan Wilkinson delivered a stunning 28-save shutout—his first of the season.

Despite being outshot 28-11, Mentor's defensive discipline and ability to limit University’s second-chance opportunities proved crucial. The win makes Mentor the first public school in our area to reach the Frozen Four.

With a state semifinal on March 8 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Mentor now prepares for its biggest challenge yet. The Cardinals’ opponent and game time will be determined after rebracketing on March 2, but one thing is certain—this historic run has energized the entire Mentor hockey community.
