📰 Mentor Councilman Defiant Amid Calls for Resignation

Mentor City Councilman Scott Marn, facing a 5-1 censure from colleagues Tuesday night, has refused to relinquish his seat despite serious accusations against him.

The controversy stems from a September altercation at a Buffalo Wild Wings that ended with Marn unconscious on the ground after admittedly responding to a Black driver with the phrase "you're acting like one" – a thinly veiled reference to a racial slur. The driver, Tony Jackson-Davis, is now serving prison time for the assault.

Marn conceded Tuesday that it was the wrong thing to say, offering an apology that came six months after the incident.

Council President Sean Blake didn't mince words: "Mentor is not a community that is racist. We do not condone one of us addressing somebody with that word."

The resolution also referenced Marn's attendance at a marina event allegedly themed around prostitution stereotypes.

Marn, who has served 25 years since his election at age 29, dismissed the proceedings as witchhunt and refused to resign.

While the resolution lacks legal force, it leaves hanging the question of what accountability means in local government when the mechanisms of removal remain unclear and the accused refuses to bow to moral pressure.

Major Upgrades Coming to Mentor Civic Center Park in 2025

Big changes are on the way for Mentor Civic Center Park, with several new amenities set to enhance the popular community space. As part of the redevelopment, tree clearing has already begun near the skatepark on Munson Road, marking the start of a multi-phase improvement plan.

New Basketball Courts & Expanded Parking

The existing skatepark will be replaced with two brand-new basketball courts and a larger parking lot with 152 spaces. Additionally, the current basketball court will be converted into three new pickleball courts. Construction on the parking lot is expected to wrap up by summer.

Exciting Waterslide Additions

A 42-foot-tall waterslide structure featuring three separate chutes is set to be installed at the Civic Center Pool. Work on this new attraction is scheduled to begin in the spring and is expected to be completed by summer.

Revamped Pool Complex

Following the summer swim season, the existing pool area buildings will be demolished to make way for a modern, interconnected complex. The new facility will include upgraded restrooms, locker rooms, a concession stand, a covered dining area, and more. The pool pad and splash pad area will also be expanded.

These upgrades aim to enhance the park’s amenities for years to come. Residents can learn more about the plans by watching the 2025 State of the City Address.

📰 The Evolution of Mentor: A Look at Its Rich History

Mentor, Ohio, has undergone significant changes since its founding in 1797. The city’s first settler, Charles Parker, was part of Moses Cleaveland’s survey team and built a cabin near what is now the intersection of Hopkins Road and Lakeshore Boulevard.

In the late 19th century, the Salvation Army established a farm colony at Reynolds and Hodgson Roads to support impoverished families. This initiative lasted about a decade before transitioning into a summer camp for disadvantaged youth, which remained active until the 1960s.

The property at Mentor Avenue and Center Street has seen numerous transformations over the years. Originally home to various businesses, including a drugstore, mill, library, post office, and tavern, it now serves as a medical facility. The original library from that location was moved in 1960 to Center and Nowlen Streets, where it now houses a confectionary shop.

The Matchworks Building on Station Street dates back to 1868 and was initially constructed for the Hart Bolt & Nut Company. Over the years, it hosted several businesses, including Mentor Knitting Mills, Lake Shore Chemical Company, and Columbia Match Company. Today, it serves as a hub for nearly 30 small businesses.

Mentor’s original cemetery was once located at Mentor Avenue and Center Street, but in 1854, the graves were relocated to accommodate the construction of a school.

A significant commercial milestone for Mentor was the opening of the Great Lakes Mall in 1961. Developed by the DeBartolo family, it was the largest shopping mall in the country at the time.

The Mentor Lagoons Marina & Nature Preserve has a history of near-development projects. Over the years, proposals for a steelyard, shipping dock, housing complex, boatel, and harness racing track were considered but never materialized, allowing the area to remain a natural retreat.

🏀 Cavs Clinch Playoff Spot with Gritty Win Over Short-Handed Heat

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured their 12th consecutive win and became the first NBA team to clinch a playoff spot with a 112-107 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night.

Despite a shaky final two minutes, Cleveland managed to hold off a short-handed Miami squad. The Heat, missing several key players—including leading scorer Tyler Herro—held a 107-106 lead with just under three minutes remaining but failed to score again. A potential game-tying three-pointer by Duncan Robinson was overturned after officials determined he had stepped out of bounds.

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 26 points, while Darius Garland contributed 10 assists. Evan Mobley and De’Andre Hunter each added 16 points.

For Miami, Bam Adebayo delivered a standout performance, scoring a season-high 34 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. However, without Herro and several other rotation players, the Heat struggled to close out the game.

A highlight of the night came early when Miami’s Kevin Love received a warm welcome from Cleveland fans in his first game back at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse since leaving for the Heat. A video tribute played in his honor, celebrating his contributions to the Cavaliers’ 2016 championship run.

Cleveland is now one of just seven teams in NBA history to record three double-digit winning streaks in a single season.
