Mentor Voters to Decide May 6th on $2.5M Observation Tower at Lagoons

City of Mentor

Mentor voters will decide May 6 whether to approve a 92-foot observation tower at the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. The project, costing an estimated $2.5 million, requires voter approval under the city charter.

The tower would provide panoramic marsh and Lake Erie views from a 25-by-25-foot deck, including an ADA-accessible platform. Originally funded in 2024 with $2 million, construction was delayed and rolled into this year’s budget.

If passed, work would start this summer; if rejected, the project would be shelved and $450,000 in state grant funding forfeited. Officials cite rising ecotourism and birding popularity, with over 220,000 visitors drawn annually to Mentor Lagoons.

🏘️ Spring Real Estate Season Off to a Sluggish Start as Sales Tumble in March

March saw a sharp slowdown in the U.S. housing market, with home sales hitting their lowest pace for the month since 2009. Higher mortgage rates and broader economic uncertainty dampened what is typically the busiest time of year for real estate.

Sales of previously owned homes dropped 5.9% from February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.02 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors. Compared to March 2024, sales were down 2.4%, with declines across all regions. The West experienced the steepest monthly drop but was the only region to post a year-over-year gain, driven by job growth in the Rocky Mountain states.

These results reflect contracts signed earlier this year when the 30-year fixed mortgage rate was above 7%, only dipping below that level in late February.

While inventory rose nearly 20% from last year, it remains below a balanced market level. Increased listings have started to cool price growth: the median sale price hit $403,700 in March, a new monthly record but up just 2.7% from a year ago—the slowest pace of growth since August.

First-time buyers made up 32% of the market, matching last year but below historical norms. All-cash sales dipped slightly to 26%, while investors remained steady at 15%.

Looking ahead, rising canceled contracts and April’s stock market volatility suggest further pressure on the market. Economists warn that inflation concerns and new tariffs on home goods could intensify the slowdown.

⚾ Red Sox Crush Guardians 13-3 Behind Rafaela’s Big Day

The Boston Red Sox powered past the Cleveland Guardians with a 13-3 win on Sunday, fueled by a standout performance from Ceddanne Rafaela, who homered and drove in five runs. Rafaela’s three-run shot in the seventh inning, launched over the center-field fence off Joey Cantillo, helped seal the victory.

Jarren Duran continued his strong form, delivering four hits for Boston, marking the second time in his career he has recorded back-to-back three-hit games. During the seventh-inning stretch, Duran confronted a fan who reportedly mocked his past struggles with mental health, but team staff and umpires quickly intervened to address the situation.

Adding to the Red Sox's dominant offense, Rob Refsnyder and Rafael Devers each contributed solo home runs. Boston has now won nine of its last 12 games and recorded 15 wins in April, the second-highest total in the American League.

For Cleveland, Nolan Jones provided a highlight with a three-run homer in the sixth inning. However, the Guardians' loss marked their first home series defeat of the season.

⚾ Mentor Cardinals Hold Off North Royalton for 5-4 Victory

The Mentor Cardinals varsity boys baseball team secured a close 5-4 home victory over the North Royalton Bears in non-conference play on Saturday.

North Royalton opened the game strong, scoring single runs in the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Mentor answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fifth to pull ahead. The Bears managed to chip away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings but ultimately fell short as the Cardinals held on for the win.

Mentor’s offense was steady, with seven different players contributing singles. Peter Kennedy led the way with two RBIs, while Brayden Bortnick crossed the plate twice. The Cardinals showcased their speed on the base paths, tallying seven stolen bases — Josh Wieland accounting for two, and five other players adding one each.

Mentor utilized five pitchers throughout the game. Adam Adkins earned the win despite surrendering a run in his single inning of work. Jacob Gunvelson came in to close, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings to lock down the save.

With the victory, Mentor improves to 11-2 on the season. The Cardinals are back in action today, facing Strongsville at 5 p.m.
