📰 Mentor Voters to Decide on Observation Tower at Lagoons Preserve

City of Mentor

Mentor residents will have the opportunity to vote on Issue 4 in today’s election, which seeks approval for the construction of an observation tower at the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. Under the city's charter, any capital improvement within the preserve requires voter approval.

The proposed tower would stand 92 feet tall and be located approximately 1,000 feet north of the main trailhead entrance. Designed to provide panoramic views of the marsh, uplands, and Lake Erie, the structure would feature a 25’ x 25’ top deck along with an ADA-accessible elevated platform.

If approved, construction would begin in summer 2025, utilizing $450,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). However, if voters reject the issue, the project will be indefinitely tabled, and the grant funding will be rescinded.

Residents with questions about the project can contact the Mentor Public Information Office at [email protected]. A sample ballot will be available once released by the Lake County Board of Elections.

🛠️ Clogged Drain? Here’s the Fix You Can Do in Minutes

A slow or clogged drain can feel like a plumbing emergency — but most of the time, it’s a quick DIY fix. Whether you’re dealing with a bathroom sink, shower, or kitchen drain, a few simple tools and tricks can get things flowing again without calling in the pros.

Start with boiling water. It sounds too easy, but it works. Slowly pour a full pot of boiling water down the drain in two to three stages, giving it time to loosen up grease or soap buildup.

Still clogged? Try baking soda and vinegar. Pour ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drain, followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Quickly cover the drain with a stopper or towel. Let it sit for 15 minutes as the fizzy reaction breaks down gunk. Then rinse with more hot water.

Hair clogs — especially in showers and bathroom sinks — are the usual suspects. A plastic drain snake or “zip-it” tool can be your best friend here. Simply remove the stopper and insert the tool into the drain. You’ll likely pull up a mix of hair and gunk that's been blocking the way.

For bathroom sinks, remove the pop-up stopper and scrub it clean. Soap scum and toothpaste often build up here. In kitchens, food scraps and grease are common clog culprits — avoid dumping oil down the sink.

Avoid chemical drain cleaners unless absolutely necessary. They’re harsh on pipes and dangerous for septic systems. Plus, most clogs don’t need them.

Prevent future issues by using drain screens to catch hair or debris. Once a month, flush drains with hot water and vinegar. It’s an easy way to keep things fresh and flowing.

These simple steps can save you hundreds in plumber fees and give you peace of mind next time the water slows down.
