🏃‍♂️ 5K and Resource Fair at Lakeland to Support Local Veterans

Lakeland Community College will host the Stars and Strides 5K Run/Walk and Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, May 17, in celebration of Armed Forces Day. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on the college’s campus at 7700 Clocktower Drive in Kirtland.

Organized by the college’s Veterans Center in partnership with Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity, the event is designed to honor and support military service members and their families. The 5K invites participants to run or walk in teams dedicated to friends or family members who have served in the military.

In addition to the race, the Veterans Resource Fair will be held in the H-Building, offering information on services and benefits available to veterans. On-site VA disability and health benefit enrollment will be available, along with booths featuring veteran-owned businesses and service organizations.

Open to the public, the event welcomes veterans, active-duty personnel, military families, caregivers, and community members. Additional details are available at lakelandcc.edu/veterans.

📰 Joe Glavan Named Next Superintendent of Auburn Career Center

Joe Glavan has been unanimously appointed as the next superintendent of Auburn Career Center, with his term beginning August 1. He will succeed retiring superintendent Brian Bontempo.

Glavan brings extensive experience in career-technical education, having served in leadership roles with Mentor Schools, Lakeland Community College, and the Lake Shore Compact. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Youngstown State University, along with degrees from Lake Erie College and Kent State University, and principal licensure from Cleveland State.

Auburn’s Board of Education praised Glavan’s vision, student-focused approach, and strong ties to the region. His leadership is expected to build on Auburn’s 59-year legacy as Ohio’s first career-tech education center.

Glavan looks forward to collaborating with students, staff, and community members to strengthen Auburn’s role in preparing students for meaningful careers. Board members and Bontempo expressed confidence in Glavan’s ability to lead the school into a new era of growth and innovation.

🍅 Mentor’s Garfield Park Hosts Family-Friendly Market and Kids Sale Today

Get ready for a fun-filled afternoon in Mentor as two community favorites come together at Eleanor B. Garfield Park TODAY, Friday, May 16, from 2 to 6 p.m. The Just Kids Stuff Garage Sale and the Early Bird Mentor Farmers Market Preview will offer something for everyone in one convenient location.

Hosted by Mentor Parks & Recreation, the Just Kids Stuff Garage Sale is an annual event where families can browse and buy gently used children’s items, toys, games, and more. At the same time, the Mentor Farmers Market will give visitors a sneak peek of its 2024 season, featuring vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, and local treats.

The Farmers Market will be located on the upper grounds of Garfield Park, while the garage sale will take place in the lower area near the pavilion and ball fields. With a mix of local shopping and family-friendly fun, this event is a great way to spend a spring afternoon in the park.

🚨 Jury Convicts Painesville Man in Killing of Teen in Willoughby

Fernando Alejo, 23, of Painesville, was found guilty of murder and two related felonies in the death of 17-year-old Rogelio Isaac Cabrera in Downtown Willoughby in 2024. The verdict came on May 13, with sentencing set for 30 days later.

📢 Painesville Car Cruise Rolls Back Into Town Starting Tonight

City of Painesville - Car Cruise Friday Nights

Painesville’s popular Car Cruise returns this evening, kicking off its 2025 season at Veterans Park from 5 to 8 p.m. The weekly event, a local favorite, transforms Painesville Square into a showcase of classic, muscle, and custom cars, all set against the scenic backdrop of the historic downtown park.

Held every Friday from May 16 through September 19, weather permitting, the Car Cruise offers more than just a stroll through vintage vehicles. Guests can enjoy live music, grab a bite from on-site vendors, and mingle with fellow car enthusiasts in a festive community setting.

The event is hosted by the Downtown Painesville Organization (DPO) and is free to the public, making it a perfect summer evening tradition for families, collectors, and anyone who appreciates a little automotive nostalgia.

🥎 Lake Catholic Softball Shut Out by Ravenna in Tournament Loss

The Lake Catholic girls softball team faced a tough loss on Thursday, falling 8-0 to the Ravenna Ravens in a tournament matchup held in Ravenna. The Cougars struggled to generate offense against a dominant pitching performance from Ravenna, managing no hits through seven innings.

Ravenna’s pitcher controlled the game from start to finish, allowing just one walk while striking out six batters. On the other side, Lake Catholic’s Lizzie Bammerlin turned in a complete-game effort, pitching six innings and recording ten strikeouts. However, she gave up 12 hits and eight runs, seven of which were earned.

The defeat drops Lake Catholic to a 3-13 record for the season. The Cougars will look to rebound in their next game, scheduled for Saturday against Magnificat.

🥎 Mentor Rallies in Seventh to Edge Medina in Conference Thriller

The Mentor Cardinals emerged victorious in a thrilling conference showdown on Thursday, edging out the Medina Battling Bees 9-8. In a game marked by constant lead changes, Mentor delivered a clutch performance in the seventh inning, scoring two key runs to take the lead. The Cardinals' pitching staff then held Medina scoreless in the bottom of the frame to secure the win.

Mentor’s offense was firing on all cylinders, collecting 13 hits in total. Four players notched multi-hit games, including Aubree Colon and Maddie Beam-Jones, each going 2-for-4. Beam-Jones added power to the lineup with a solo home run. Chy Harville also went 2-for-4, contributing a double, while Ireland Rainey went 2-for-3, also with a double.

On the mound, Maggie Haydu pitched a complete game. She gave up eight runs, only four of them earned, and allowed 13 hits, ultimately earning the win.

The victory improves Mentor’s record to 20-7 overall and a perfect 13-0 in conference play. The Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going in their next game on May 19 at GlenOak.
