š¬ Shore Middle Students Explore Forensics with Local Police Officer Childs
![]() | ![]() |
Eighth grade science students at Shore Middle School recently received a hands-on lesson in crime scene investigation, thanks to a special classroom visit from Officer Childs. As part of their unit on evidence collection, students learned firsthand about the real-world application of scientific principles in law enforcement.
Officer Childs, who not only serves as a patrol officer but also works as an Evidence Technician, gave students a detailed overview of his role in processing crime scenes. He explained the significance of proper evidence handling and demonstrated some of the specialized tools and techniques used in the field.
The visit offered students a unique perspective on how science plays a vital role in solving crimes, reinforcing their classroom learning with engaging, practical insights. The school continues to foster educational enrichment by connecting academic topics with real-world careers.
Weāre so thankful for our local police officers!

š± Mentor Deactivates City App, Promotes Emergency Alert System
The City of Mentor has deactivated its mobile app for Apple and Android devices, following a wave of resident inquiries. The app, which launched in 2015, was removed in April after it became outdated and redundant.
Its main featureāpush notificationsāwas replaced in 2020 by the Lake County Emergency Management Agency's Wireless Emergency Alert System (WENS). WENS offers real-time notifications via text, email, or voice for emergencies, weather alerts, road closures, and more. Residents can customize alerts by selecting specific communities like Mentor during the quick sign-up process.
City officials recommend deleting the old app and instead bookmarking www.cityofmentor.com for easy access to updates.
The Mentor Channel App remains active and is available for download at www.thementorchannel.com.
š° UPDATE: Driver Rescued After Crashing Into Ravine Off I-90 in Lake County
Authorities have released new information about the Memorial Day crash on Interstate 90 in Lake County that caused major traffic disruptions and required a complex rescue operation.
The incident unfolded around 5:15 p.m. Monday near Vrooman Road in Leroy Township. A westbound vehicle was reportedly driving erratically when it collided with a semi-truck. The impact sent the vehicle off the roadway, through a guardrail and chain-link fence, before plunging into a ravine. The car came to rest roughly 80 to 100 feet down the slope, suspended approximately 15 to 20 feet above Paine Creek.
Leroy Township fire crews reached the vehicle by 5:40 p.m. and initiated a technical rescue. By 6:51 p.m., the driver was safely extricated and lifted to the roadside using a specialized hauling system. A medical helicopter transported the individual to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. As of now, the driverās condition remains unknown.
Once the rescue was completed, the scene was turned over to law enforcement and a recovery crew from Bobās Garage to retrieve the vehicle.
The crash prompted widespread traffic delays in both directions on I-90. Emergency response teams temporarily closed lanes to accommodate the rescue effort, with the eastbound lanes used as a staging area. Motorists were diverted onto Vrooman Road, causing backups that stretched toward Concord. Westbound traffic was halted at State Route 528 near Madison, leading to significant congestion extending into Ashtabula County.
Despite the challenging terrain and heavy holiday traffic, fire officials noted the operation went smoothly, crediting coordinated efforts among emergency responders for a successful rescue.

š¶ 9 Surprising Benefits of Stretching for Your Body and Mind
Stretching is more than just a warm-up or cool-down routineāitās a powerful practice with wide-ranging benefits for your body and mind. Incorporating regular stretching into your daily or weekly schedule can help improve flexibility, reduce pain, and enhance overall physical performance.
š§ 9 Proven Benefits of Stretching
1. Boosts Flexibility
Improved flexibility supports ease in everyday movements and can delay the natural decline in mobility that often comes with aging.
2. Expands Range of Motion
A better range of motion in your joints allows for more freedom and functionality. Consistent stretching helps preserve and even improve joint mobility over time.
3. Enhances Physical Performance
Dynamic stretches before activity can prepare your muscles for movement, potentially boosting performance in workouts and sports.
4. Promotes Better Circulation
Stretching encourages increased blood flow to muscles, which can help reduce soreness and speed up recovery, especially after intense exercise.
5. Improves Posture
Targeted stretching of tight muscles, especially when combined with strengthening exercises, can alleviate musculoskeletal imbalances and help improve alignment and posture.
6. Supports Back Health
Tight muscles often contribute to back pain. Regular stretchingāespecially of the hips, hamstrings, and lower backācan reduce pain, prevent strain, and promote healing.
7. Reduces Stress
Tension tends to build up in areas like the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Stretching these areas can help release that tension and foster relaxation.
8. Calms the Mind
Stretching routines, especially when combined with breathing or mindfulness techniques, can be mentally soothing and act as a form of active meditation.
9. Relieves Tension Headaches
By addressing muscle tension caused by stress, stretching can help alleviate and prevent tension headaches, supporting overall wellness when combined with rest and hydration.
ā How to Start a Stretching Routine
If youāre new to stretching, start gradually. Focus on learning proper form and avoid pushing your body too far. Begin with five to ten minutes of stretching each day, paying attention to key areas such as:
Calves
Hamstrings
Hip flexors
Quadriceps
Shoulders
Neck
Lower back
Exercise Days:
Before workout: 5ā10 minutes of dynamic stretching.
After workout: 5ā10 minutes of static or PNF stretching.
Non-exercise Days: Schedule at least 5ā10 minutes for full-body stretching to maintain flexibility and reduce tightness.
ā ļø Safety Tips and Risks
While stretching is generally safe, consider these precautions:
Avoid stretching to the point of pain.
Donāt overstretchāmuscles need rest too.
Never stretch cold muscles; warm up first with light cardio.
If you have an injury or physical limitation, consult a healthcare provider or physical therapist before starting a new routine.
š§¾ Takeaway
Stretching can be a powerful addition to your wellness routine, improving flexibility, reducing discomfort, enhancing performance, and calming your mind. With the right approach and consistency, it can support both your physical and mental health in meaningful ways.
