š£ Easy, Affordable, and Local: Fishing Fun Across Northeast Ohio
You donāt need a boat or expensive gear to enjoy summer fishing. With thousands of miles of shoreline and dozens of accessible lakes, Northeast Ohio offers easy and affordable angling options for all skill levels.
What to Catch
For shore anglers, these six species are ideal targets during summer:
Bluegill ā Common and easy to catch (worms, waxworms).
Crappie ā Tasty panfish, black or white varieties (minnows, waxworms).
Catfish ā Hard-fighting bottom dwellers (nightcrawlers, shrimp).
Largemouth Bass ā Aggressive and widespread (minnows, shiners).
Smallmouth Bass ā Found in rivers and Lake Erie (crayfish, nightcrawlers).
Carp ā Large, strong, and often overlooked (corn, dough balls).
Licenses & Legal Info
Anglers 16+ need a license ($25/year; $10 for seniors). Fines for fishing without one can reach $200. Buy online or at retailers like Walmart.
Top Shore Fishing Spots
Local hotspots with great access and a mix of species include:
Mogadore Reservoir (Portage Co.) ā Excellent for panfish and bass.
Nimisila Reservoir (Summit Co.) ā Quiet waters, great for bluegill.
Portage Lakes (Summit Co.) ā Chain of lakes with a variety of fish.
Berlin Lake (Mahoning/Portage/Stark) ā All six species, plus walleye.
Clendening Lake (Harrison Co.) ā Top crappie and catfish location.
Donāt forget Lake Erie, where shore anglers can find smallmouth bass, catfish, carp, and panfish at accessible locations like Geneva State Park, the Emerald Necklace Marina in Lakewood, Miller Road Park in Avon Lake, and Lorainās lakefront areas. Lake Erie fishing remains alive and wellāand itās not just for boaters.
Closer to home options here in Mentor:
Veterans Park (Hopkins Rd., Mentor) ā A stocked inland pond perfect for beginners and kids. It's part of the Lake Metroparks system and offers easy access, restrooms, and walking trails. Weāre hearing thereās Bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish, and more. Perfect for a calm family-friendly outing.
Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina (Harbor Dr., Mentor) ā Lake Erie access via protected lagoons and a nature preserve. Shoreline access and marina areas provide opportunities to catch larger species. Weāre hearing thereās largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, carp, & perch. Natural setting with trails, docks, and quiet fishing areasāideal for those seeking a mix of lake and inland-style fishing.
Headlands Beach State Park (Mentor) ā Ohioās longest natural beach, adjacent to the Grand River and Mentor Marsh. Weāre hearing thereās smallmouth bass, rock bass, sheepshead, catfish, perch. Fish from the Grand River mouth, jetties, or break walls; excellent for those targeting Lake Erie species without a boat.
Additional accessible areas: Geneva State Park, Springfield Lake, and other Lake Erie access points all across the north coast.
For those with mobility concerns, top ADA-friendly options include Pymatuning, Mosquito, and Wingfoot state parks.
Tips for Success
Fish early or late in the day for best results. Target shaded areas like docks, weeds, and submerged logs. Basic rods, bait, and bobbers are all you need. Cane poles cost as little as $5 and work well for beginners.
Learn the improved clinch knot, use hook sizes based on fish type, and keep your rod at a 45-degree angle when reeling.

š Good News for Buyers: Mortgage Rates Barely Budge After Economic Report
Mortgage rates ticked up slightly following the release of the U.S. jobs report on Thursday, but the increase was more modest than many anticipatedāgood news for prospective homebuyers across Northeast Ohio and beyond.
The monthly employment data, a key indicator for financial markets, showed the U.S. labor market remains strong. Unemployment dipped unexpectedly from 4.2% to 4.1%, defying forecasts of a rise to 4.3%. Additionally, employers added 147,000 jobs in June, beating projections of 110,000.
Normally, such results would put significant upward pressure on mortgage rates, as a strong job market can delay interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Higher bond yieldsādriven by Thursdayās dataāusually translate to higher mortgage rates.
However, lenders appeared to have anticipated some volatility. Earlier in the week, mortgage rates had already dipped to their lowest levels in several months. Rather than dropping them further ahead of the long holiday weekend, lenders left a bit of a buffer in place. That cushion helped absorb the bond marketās reaction, keeping rate increases relatively minor.
For now, local buyers can breathe a small sigh of reliefāwhile rates are slightly higher, they remain near recent lows.

ā¾ Guardians Collapse Late as Losing Streak Extends
Guardians Fall in Extra Innings as Skid Reaches 10 Games
The Guardians came within one strike of ending their losing streak Sunday, only to watch it unravel in a crushing 7-2 extra-inning loss to the Tigers at Progressive Field. A wild pitch by closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth allowed Detroit to tie the game, and the Tigers erupted for six runs in the 10th to complete a sweep.
Clevelandās bullpen couldnāt hold after a strong start from Gavin Williams, who gave up just one hit over six innings while striking out eight. Steven Kwan led the offense with three hits, including an RBI double in the eighth that briefly gave the Guardians a 1-0 lead.
But the late lead slipped away, and Detroit capitalized in the 10th with a leadoff single, a three-run homer, and more damage that left Cleveland reeling. It marked the teamās 10th straight loss, their longest since 2012 and just two shy of the franchise-worst 12-game skid in 1931.
The Guardians now head to Houston looking to regroup before the All-Star break.

ā¾ Hartle Solid, But Lake County Offense Stalls in Shutout Loss
Captains Shut Out by Dayton in Weekend Finale
The Lake County Captains wrapped up their weekend series with a frustrating 4-0 loss to the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon at Classic Auto Group Park. Despite a solid outing from starter Josh Hartle, Lake County's bats fell silent, managing just three hits in the shutout.
Hartle took the loss but pitched effectively through five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking two. The Dragons chipped away with runs in the first and third innings, both coming on RBI doubles. Dayton added two insurance runs in the eighth, including a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring infield single.
The Captains struggled to generate any offense, failing to mount a serious scoring threat throughout the game. With the defeat, Hartleās record moves to 5-2, though his ERA remains solid at 3.36.
Lake County looks to bounce back as they prepare for their next series on the road.
