☔ Cooler Days Ahead: Lake-Effect Showers and Breezy Conditions Early This Week

A noticeable drop in temperatures is set to arrive as the new week begins, bringing a crisp, early fall-like feel to the region.

Tonight, expect lows to dip into the upper 50s under partly cloudy skies—a sign of the cooler air mass moving in.

Monday and Tuesday will feature a mix of sun and clouds with occasional lake-effect showers. A brisk northwest wind will keep high temperatures well below average, holding steady in the low to mid-60s. These two days will feel significantly cooler compared to the recent late-summer warmth.

By Wednesday, sunshine returns and skies clear, but temperatures will remain cool, with highs only reaching the upper 60s. The dry weather continues into Thursday, offering a calmer and more pleasant midweek stretch.

Looking ahead to the end of the week, a gradual warming trend is expected. Afternoon highs will rebound into the low to mid-70s by Friday and the weekend, returning the region to more seasonable conditions. However, Friday also brings the next chance of rain, so keep an umbrella handy to end the workweek.

After a chilly start, the week gradually moderates, with improving weather and rising temperatures just in time for the weekend.

Driver Flees Scene After Two-Vehicle Crash on Mentor Avenue

Authorities in Lake County are investigating a hit-and-run crash that occurred August 14th night on Mentor Avenue near Millmore Drive.

The collision, reported shortly after 9 p.m., involved a Chevy Equinox, which remained at the scene with airbags deployed and visible damage. The second vehicle fled before police arrived and has not yet been identified.

Emergency crews responded quickly, finding several bystanders nearby. Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction while responders secured the scene and assessed potential injuries.

At this time, no description of the fleeing vehicle has been confirmed. Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Contact local authorities if you have information on the accident.

“Former Homeowner? You Might Still Qualify as a First-Time Buyer”

Can You Be a First-Time Home Buyer Again? Yes — Here’s How

If you’ve owned a home before but it's been a few years, you may be surprised to learn that you could qualify as a first-time home buyer again—and doing so can unlock big benefits.

According to HUD, anyone who hasn’t owned or lived in a primary residence in the past three years may be considered a first-time buyer. This rule means you can regain eligibility even if you’ve previously owned a home—so long as it wasn't your principal residence, or enough time has passed since you sold, moved out, or lost the property.

Why does this matter? Regaining first-time buyer status can give you access to:

  • Special mortgage programs like FHA, USDA, and certain VA loans

  • Down payment assistance and forgivable grants

  • Lower mortgage insurance rates

  • Tax credits or rebates

Common situations that may qualify you again include renting for 3+ years after selling, losing a home to foreclosure years ago, or owning only investment or vacation properties.

If you think you might qualify, speak to a lender familiar with first-time buyer programs. Many local and state housing agencies also offer assistance—especially if you meet income limits.

Being labeled a first-time buyer again could reduce your upfront costs and monthly mortgage payments—making homeownership more accessible than you think.

⚾ Rangers Complete Sweep with 5-0 Shutout Over Slumping Guards

The Texas Rangers wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday with a 5-0 win, fueled by strong pitching from Merrill Kelly and home runs from Rowdy Tellez and Joc Pederson.

Kelly delivered seven shutout innings and struck out eight — his best outing since joining Texas in a July trade. It marked his first win as a Ranger.

Texas took control in the fourth inning when Tellez hit a two-run homer. Wyatt Langford followed with a bloop two-run single to shallow right, pushing the lead to 4-0. Pederson added a solo homer in the seventh.

The Rangers, now 66-66, have won three straight and reached .500 for the first time since August 14.

Cleveland's offense faltered again, limited to eight singles over the final 19 innings of the series. The Guardians were shut out for a second straight game and have now lost 8 out of their last 10 games, slipping below .500 for the first time since July 29.

Gavin Williams allowed three runs in just over three innings, walking four. Despite his strong numbers against lefties this season, he gave up the key homer to Tellez.

Next, the Guardians return home to face Tampa Bay today.

⚾ TinCaps Power Past Captains with Early Surge and Late Homers

The Fort Wayne TinCaps secured an 8-3 win over the Lake County Captains on Sunday, powered by consistent offense and standout performances at the plate.

Fort Wayne jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, beginning with a two-run double to center that brought in Rosman Verdugo and Kai Roberts. A close play at the plate cut down a third runner trying to score, but the TinCaps continued their momentum. A pair of consecutive hits followed—first a single that added another run, then a soft double to left that extended the lead to 4-0.

The TinCaps' offense didn't slow down. In the fourth inning, they added a solo home run to left field. Lake County responded in the fifth with a solo shot of their own, trimming the deficit to 5-1. The Captains inched closer in the seventh, drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run.

However, Fort Wayne quickly regained control in the eighth when a two-run homer sailed over left-center, stretching the lead to 7-2. Lake County managed one final run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, but the TinCaps capped off the game with an RBI single in the ninth to lock in their five-run victory.

Lake County’s starter struggled early, giving up four runs over just two innings, a performance that set the tone for the rest of the contest. Fort Wayne’s offense capitalized and never looked back.
