📰 Mentor Maps Its Future with Community at the Center

Mentor Residents Help Shape the City’s Future Through Comprehensive Plan Update
Mentor residents are playing a central role in planning the city’s future as part of an ongoing update to its comprehensive plan—a roadmap that will guide growth, development, and preservation through 2045. On October 1st, the city hosted its second public workshop, inviting the community to weigh in on early concepts and priorities.
Organized by the City of Mentor Planning Department and consultants from Stantec Group, the workshop followed an April kickoff and incorporated insights from over 700 survey responses. The open-house event encouraged residents to explore land use maps, speak with planners, and review development prototypes designed to reflect Mentor’s evolving needs.
Residents shared strong preferences for preserving green space, improving walkability, supporting small businesses, and providing more diverse, affordable housing. They also voiced concerns about traffic congestion, underused commercial spaces, and maintaining the balance between old and new development.
A key part of the event involved reviewing three hypothetical development prototypes—general examples of how vacant or underutilized land in Mentor might be reimagined. These models showcased ideas such as mixed-use buildings, open spaces, and connected neighborhoods. Attendees gave feedback through sticky notes, dot voting, and direct discussion with the planning team.
Community input will shape a revised vision statement and set of guiding principles, which emphasize sustainability, safety, accessibility, and inclusive growth. This feedback will be used to draft the city’s updated land use plan, expected for public review early next year.
Residents who missed the workshop can still participate online by visiting the city’s comprehensive plan webpage at www.cityofmentor.com/comprehensiveplan. There, they can review materials and share input to help ensure Mentor’s future reflects the community’s priorities.

📰 Freshman Athlete Dies After Medical Emergency During Training
A community in mourning is rallying around the family of 14-year-old Lucas McGee, a freshman wrestler at Mentor High School, who has tragically passed away following a medical emergency during a conditioning workout last month.
Lucas collapsed and stopped breathing while running with a teammate after school on September 29. He was first rushed to the Cleveland Clinic in Mentor before being flown to the main campus for advanced care. Despite the efforts of ICU staff and being placed on a ventilator, Lucas did not recover.
Doctors explored the possibility that his sudden heart failure may have been linked to a recent illness, though an official cause has not been confirmed.
Lucas was the youngest of three siblings, and his family is now facing mounting medical and funeral costs. In response, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with expenses, which has already raised over $33,000.
Mentor Schools expressed condolences in a public statement, as the school and local community continue to support the McGee family through this difficult time.

🏈 Cardinals Extend Dominance Over Red Raiders with Blowout Win

Mentor continued its dominant run through the season with a commanding 49-0 win over Shaker Heights on Friday night, keeping their undefeated record intact and extending a long-standing winning streak over the Red Raiders.
The Cardinals wasted no time asserting control, overwhelming Shaker Heights on both sides of the ball. It marked the ninth consecutive win for Mentor in this matchup, as the Red Raiders once again struggled to find answers against a well-rounded opponent.
With the victory, Mentor improves to 8-0 on the season, further solidifying its position as a top contender. Shaker Heights, meanwhile, falls to 1-7 and continues to face difficulties, particularly on the road. The loss marks their seventh straight road defeat dating back to last season.
Looking ahead, both teams turn their attention to familiar conference foes. Mentor will take on Lorain at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in a game where the Cardinals will look to continue their perfect run. Shaker Heights will try to bounce back as they prepare to host Strongsville at the same time. No further details or stats were available post game.
🏈 Lake Catholic Steamrolls Padua Franciscan with 30-0 Shutout

Lake Catholic left no doubt about their dominance in a commanding 30-0 shutout win over Padua Franciscan, showcasing a relentless ground attack and a stifling defense from start to finish.
The Cougars leaned heavily on their running game, piling up 282 rushing yards while averaging a staggering 7.2 yards per carry. Leading the charge was running back Danny Zmorowski, who exploded for 173 yards, including a 59-yard sprint that helped swing momentum early. His consistent production kept the Bruins' defense on its heels throughout the game.
Quarterback Max Pisano contributed modestly through the air, completing 8 of 12 passes for 92 yards with one interception. However, his impact on the ground was far more significant, scoring two rushing touchdowns to help seal the win.
Defensively, Lake Catholic delivered a near-perfect performance. Peter Malchesky came up with a key interception, and the Cougars’ defense smothered any attempt by Padua Franciscan to build momentum, holding them scoreless for all four quarters.
With this victory, Lake Catholic improves to 6-2 on the season and extends their winning streak to two games, averaging 28 points during that stretch. Meanwhile, Padua Franciscan continues to struggle, falling to 1-7 with their fourth consecutive loss.
Looking ahead, Lake Catholic will face a familiar challenge as they prepare to host Holy Name this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Both teams boast strong defenses, with the Cougars allowing just 11.9 points per game and the Green Wave giving up 14.5. With both squads excelling at keeping opponents off the scoreboard, every point in this upcoming matchup will be hard-earned.
