🎰 Illegal Gambling Crackdown Hits Three Mentor-on-the-Lake Businesses

Authorities in Lake County executed search warrants at three businesses in Mentor-on-the-Lake as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal gambling operations.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission, working in coordination with the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department, seized or disabled approximately 85 suspected illegal slot machines across the three locations. Officials also confiscated an undisclosed amount of cash during the raids.

The investigation was launched following reports that the establishments were operating unlicensed gaming machines, in violation of state gambling laws.

Search warrants were served at the following businesses:

  • Fun Hub, 5965 Andrews Road, Suite B

  • Skillz Zone, 7867 Plains Road

  • Players Club, 5977 Andrews Road

This enforcement action is part of a broader effort by the commission to crack down on unlawful gaming operations throughout Ohio. So far, more than 170 locations statewide have been targeted, resulting in the seizure or disabling of over 7,700 illegal slot machines — a number that surpasses the total slot machines legally operating in Ohio’s four licensed casinos.

🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ Hiker’s Five-Year Journey Across Ohio Ends in Mentor With Trail Completion

After five years and 1,444 miles, Waynesville resident Sarah Howard has completed a rare hiking achievement — a full section-hike of the Buckeye Trail, Ohio’s longest continuous trail loop. Howard’s journey officially concluded on October 13 when she reached the trail’s northern endpoint at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor.

Her milestone places her among a select group of roughly 200 hikers who have completed the trail in sections. Fewer than 30 individuals have finished the trail in a single, continuous thru-hike.

Howard began her adventure in the fall of 2020 while working as a park ranger at Caesar Creek State Park. Inspired by the proximity of the Buckeye Trail — which passes through the park — she set out with the goal of eventually hiking every section. Instead of following the trail in one linear path, she took a flexible approach, traveling to various parts of the state and tackling segments as her schedule allowed.

With the help of the FarOut app to track her progress, Howard typically hiked 10 to 12 miles per outing, though some stretches exceeded 20 miles. She faced a full spectrum of Ohio weather, from summer heat to winter cold, but stayed committed through it all.

While many of her hikes were solo, she also shared the trail with 25 to 30 different companions over the years. Her core group included about seven or eight regulars, contributing to what she described as an exceptionally supportive and welcoming hiking community.

Howard says the friendships and sense of community developed along the way are what she’ll miss most. Now that her Buckeye Trail goal is behind her, she encourages others to try it for themselves — no matter their experience level.

“It’s about starting,” she said. “You never know where a few miles might lead.”

🏈 Cardinals Aim for Perfect Season as Euclid Looks to Spoil the Party

Panthers vs. Cardinals

Mentor will look to complete a perfect regular season when it hosts Euclid in a Greater Cleveland Conference showdown on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

With a 9-0 record overall and 6-0 in conference play, Mentor has already secured a postseason berth in Division I, Region 1, and currently sits third in the rankings. The Cardinals are riding a wave of dominance, particularly on the defensive side, allowing just 34 points across their last six games. Despite surrendering 21 points to Strongsville earlier in the stretch, Mentor has consistently overwhelmed opponents.

Offensively, the Cardinals bring a potent attack. Quarterback Brogan Jones has passed for nearly 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns. Running back Jackson Farley has been nearly unstoppable, racking up over 1,465 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns while averaging more than 10 yards per carry. Wide receiver Justen Hodge adds another dimension, with 766 yards receiving. But it’s the defense — anchored by standout linebackers Carson Wolk and Ben Schenk — that has elevated Mentor to serious state title contention.

Euclid, meanwhile, comes into the matchup at 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the GCC, holding the 15th spot in Division II, Region 5. The Panthers still have playoff hopes and are fresh off a 32-14 win over Medina. Their most notable win came in Week 2 against Berea-Midpark, showing their potential to rise to the occasion.

Euclid’s dynamic duo of junior Kei’shjuan Telfair and senior Kymari Frieson could pose a challenge for Mentor’s defense. Both are versatile athletes who contribute at multiple positions, including receiver, cornerback, and return specialist. Their playmaking ability will be essential if Euclid hopes to pull off an upset and improve its postseason outlook.

Historically, Mentor has had the upper hand, leading the all-time series 31-17, including victories in 16 of the last 17 meetings.
