City of Mentor

Staying Safe and Prepared in Mentor This Winter

As winter arrives in Mentor, city officials urge residents to stay safe and prepared. With over 240 ponds, Lake Erie, and the Lagoons, local waterways may look inviting—but no ice is safe ice. Even when frozen, surfaces can be dangerously thin. Enjoy the winter scenery from solid ground and avoid walking on ice to prevent serious accidents.

In the event of a power outage, residents should report the issue directly to the Illuminating Company's Automated Outage Reporting Line at (888) 544-4877. This helps crews restore service more efficiently. Please avoid calling 911 for outages, and only use it for true emergencies such as fires, medical crises, or crimes in progress.

To stay informed during winter storms and other emergencies, locals are encouraged to register for the Lake County Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS). The system sends alerts for weather warnings, traffic updates, and city-specific information via landline, mobile, text, or email. Sign up at lakeohioalert.com.

Residents can also help prevent plumbing issues this season by properly disposing of fats, oils, and greases (FOGs). Instead of rinsing them down the drain, allow them to cool and place them in the trash. When FOGs harden in pipes, they can lead to costly sewer backups. For more guidance, contact the Lake County Department of Utilities at (440) 350-2645 or visit lakecountyohio.gov/utilities.

For those facing financial challenges with their electric bills, assistance is available. First Energy offers several support programs through The Illuminating Company. To explore eligibility, call (800) 589-3101.

Mentor residents are urged to stay alert, informed, and proactive to ensure a safe and smooth winter season.

✈️ 🛣️ Discover the Unexpected: Three American Spots with Big Personality

Sometimes the best escapes are the ones that don’t shout for attention. These three underrated destinations offer a quieter, more textured experience — perfect for travelers who prefer discovery over crowds.

Door County, Wisconsin
On the shores of Lake Michigan, Door County feels like a quilt of small towns stitched together by lighthouses, winding coastal roads, and cherry orchards. In winter, its pace slows into a cozy rhythm: waterfront trails, cold-weather hiking in Peninsula State Park, and candle-lit suppers in tiny supper clubs. Expect crisp air, quiet harbors, and a peaceful atmosphere that rewards those willing to bundle up. Or start now and plan your trip in the spring or summer.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
It’s not every day you meet a desert made of mountains. The Great Sand Dunes rise like sleeping giants at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range — a surreal experience in summer, but winter adds a strange, haunting beauty. Snow-kissed dunes, wide-open silence, and brilliant night skies make the trip memorable, though cold-weather gear and four-wheel drive are wise companions this time of year.

St. Augustine, Florida
For those looking to thaw out, America’s oldest city offers a gentler climate and a coastal old-world charm. Wander cobblestone streets, explore the Castillo de San Marcos, or enjoy unhurried afternoons along the Atlantic. It’s the most temperate of the trio — a warm pocket during Ohio’s winter stretch.

🏈 Ohio State Overpowers Michigan 27-9, Will Battle Indiana for Big Ten Crown

Ohio State Snaps Michigan Streak with 27-9 Win, Advances to Big Ten Title Game

No. 1 Ohio State ended its four-game losing streak against rival Michigan with a commanding 27-9 victory on Saturday, improving to 12-0 and securing a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game against undefeated No. 2 Indiana.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Julian Sayin led the way, rebounding from an early interception to throw three touchdown passes. He connected with Jeremiah Smith on a critical 35-yard strike on fourth down, and later hit Brandon Inniss and Carnell Tate for scores. Sayin finished with 233 yards on 19-of-26 passing, his sixth game this season with three or more touchdowns.

Freshman running back Bo Jackson chipped in a season-high 117 rushing yards as Ohio State controlled time of possession, including a 12 minute drive that sealed the outcome.

The Buckeyes’ top-ranked defense shut down Michigan’s offense, holding freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood to just 63 passing yards and an interception. The Wolverines were limited to 100 rushing yards and failed to score a touchdown.

Controversial officiating moments—including a debated touchdown catch and a questionable penalty—stirred debate but didn’t change the outcome, as Ohio State controlled the game throughout.

The victory likely secures a first-round College Football Playoff bye for the defending champs, while Michigan (9-3) awaits its bowl fate.

🏈 Wind, Snow, and Shedeur: Browns’ Week 13 Game Could Get Wild

Browns Face Weather Gauntlet in Week 13 Showdown with 49ers

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13, Mother Nature looks poised to play a starring role. Forecasts are predicting a trifecta of weather challenges: wind, rain, and snow — the kind of elements that could define the game as much as any player on the field.

For those who cherish the grit and grind of old-school, outdoor football, this matchup at Cleveland Browns Stadium may feel like a vindication. Advocates for keeping the Browns out of a domed stadium often point to the city’s unpredictable weather as part of its football identity. This Sunday, that identity will be on full display.

According to The Weather Channel, Sunday’s conditions include early rain showers turning into snow by afternoon, with high temperatures reaching only 38°F. Winds from the southwest are expected to blow between 25 and 35 miles per hour, with even stronger gusts possible. The combination of precipitation and high winds could disrupt everything from special teams play to passing accuracy and field goal attempts.

This stormy backdrop could also cast a shadow over the much-anticipated home debut of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. While excitement has been building around his first start in Cleveland, the weather may limit the opportunities for either team to showcase their aerial attacks.

The elements may force both offenses to rely heavily on the ground game and short, quick passes — a potential advantage for whichever team adapts fastest. The matchup, coming just days after Thanksgiving, is shaping up to be a physical, weather-driven contest that could be decided by field position and ball security more than high-flying offense.

With both teams entering the stretch run of the season, Sunday’s game might be as much about battling the elements as it is about besting the opponent.
