🏛️ Infrastructure, Recreation, and Reflection Define Mentor's Year-End Council Meeting

Mentor, Ohio

Mentor Council Approves 2026 Budget, Splash Pad & Bids Farewell to Veteran Councilman

At its final 2025 meeting on December 2, the Mentor City Council approved the city’s 2026 budget and advanced several key projects, including the Garfield Park Splash Pad.

The $115 million budget, passed unanimously, provides full-year funding for operations, capital improvements, and new initiatives. Notable allocations include $5 million for the splash pad and bath house at Garfield Park, $762,000 to reimburse the amphitheater fund, and $750,000 for the self-insurance fund.

Council also approved sidewalk construction along Tyler Boulevard, new public works equipment, and Motorola radios for the Fire Department.

The city is applying for a state grant to develop a master plan for the Mentor Lagoons Marina, with goals to improve parking, boat access, and long-term shoreline preservation.

The meeting closed with a farewell to Councilman Scott Marn, who retired after 26 years. Martin was recognized for his pivotal role in major developments including the Mentor Civic Amphitheater and Springbrook Park. He thanked residents, council members, and city staff, emphasizing the importance of continual reinvestment and innovation in public service.

Residents were also reminded that yard waste collection ends December 12 and that the Fire Department’s “Stuff the Squad” toy drive was a success.

The next council meeting is scheduled for early January 2026.

📦 Mentor Police Launch Undercover Operation to Stop Holiday Porch Pirates

City of Mentor

With the holiday season in full swing, package theft—or "porch piracy"—is on the rise. Thieves often snatch parcels within minutes of delivery, taking advantage of the surge in online shopping.

To counter this, the Mentor Police Department has launched a special undercover operation. Officers are using unmarked vehicles, surveillance tools, and GPS-equipped bait packages to catch offenders in the act.

Residents can also take simple steps to protect their deliveries. Sign up for tracking notifications, schedule deliveries when someone’s home, or send packages to secure locations like a workplace or an Amazon Locker at Great Lakes Mall. Trusted neighbors can also help by collecting parcels when you're away.

Video doorbells and visible security cameras are strong deterrents. Through Mentor’s Operation S.C.R.A.M., homeowners can register their camera locations with police, enabling faster response after a crime. Police don't access footage—just the camera’s location.

Vigilance is key. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles. Report concerns to Mentor Police at (440) 255-1234, and take note of license plates and directions of travel.

A few smart precautions can help keep your packages safe—and your holidays cheerful.

🐶 Your Dog’s Best Shape Yet: How to Build a Safe Fitness Routine in 2026

How to Build a Safe, Effective Fitness Plan for Your Dog (2025 Guide)

Keeping your dog physically active is essential for long-term health. Beyond burning off extra energy, a consistent fitness routine can help prevent injuries, maintain a healthy weight, support joint function, and improve your dog’s overall quality of life. But just like people, dogs benefit most from an exercise plan that’s tailored to their age, breed, and physical condition.

Start With a Vet Check

Before launching into any workout routine, it's important to get a veterinarian’s green light. Young puppies, aging dogs, or those recovering from injury may need a more cautious approach. Large-breed puppies are especially prone to joint stress until their bones fully develop, usually around two years of age. A vet visit can identify any physical limitations and, if necessary, lead to a referral for a canine physical therapist.

Ease Into New Activities

Jumping into a new fitness routine too quickly can lead to muscle strain or fatigue. Begin with short sessions, gradually increasing intensity over time. Basic training movements like controlled turns, pivots, and balance exercises can be simple yet effective for building strength and coordination.

Incorporate At-Home Exercises

Turn your living room into a mini gym with dog-friendly moves:

  • Doggy Push-Ups: Rotate between sit, down, and stand to warm up and build core strength.

  • Figure-Eight Stretch: Using treats, guide your dog to weave through your legs to enhance flexibility and focus.

Set Goals With AKC FIT DOG

The AKC FIT DOG program offers structured activity goals for adult dogs, with titles awarded for consistent participation. Whether walking 15 minutes a day, 10 times a week or opting for longer walks five times weekly, it’s a great way to stay on track. Activities like hiking, swimming, and fun runs also count toward progress.

🏀 Cavaliers Fall Flat Again, Lose to Struggling Trail Blazers at Home

Cavaliers Falter Again in 122-110 Loss to Trail Blazers

The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped their 10th game of the season Wednesday, losing 122-110 to a struggling Portland Trail Blazers squad. Despite facing a tired opponent, Cleveland couldn’t sustain effort or execution.

After a competitive first half, the Cavs fell behind by 18 in the third quarter. Late-game energy wasn't enough to close the gap, continuing a season-long trend of inconsistent play.

Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points and Evan Mobley added 23, both showing strong individual performances. However, with key players like Jarrett Allen and Max Strus out, the rest of the roster underperformed. Darius Garland struggled again, managing just six points on 2-of-13 shooting.

Cleveland shot poorly from three (13-of-52) and couldn’t generate enough inside offense to compensate. Meanwhile, Deni Avdija led Portland with 27 points, lifting the Blazers to a rare road win.

The Cavaliers host the Spurs on Friday, searching for answers after another disappointing night.
