Mentor Police Bring Holiday Joy to Local Kids with “Shop with a Cop” Event
On December 6th, the Mentor Police Department celebrated its 7th Annual Shop with a Cop, a festive event designed to bring holiday cheer to local families. The initiative, made possible through a partnership with Meijer and the Mentor Police Athletic Association (Kops and Kids), paired police officers with children for a special shopping trip filled with smiles and surprises.
Inside Meijer, the aisles came alive with laughter and excitement as officers helped children choose gifts—not only for themselves but also for their families. From toys and school supplies to warm winter wear, the day was a heartwarming reminder of the season’s spirit.
Adding a touch of holiday magic, Radar the Elf made a special appearance, entertaining kids and keeping a playful eye on the festivities. He even spent time with fellow elves searching for new homes, spreading even more seasonal joy.
The Mentor Police Department expressed deep gratitude to Meijer for its generous support, which played a crucial role in the event’s success. Shop with a Cop continues to foster meaningful connections between law enforcement and the community, creating lasting memories for both officers and families alike.

📰 Police Rescue Woman from Lake Erie After Pursuit Ends in Water
Woman Rescued from Lake Erie After Fleeing Police in Unusual Incident
A dramatic rescue took place in Mentor-on-the-Lake after a woman fled from police and entered the frigid waters of Lake Erie. The incident began when residents reported a woman knocking on doors and trying to open one.
Officers found the woman in a vehicle and asked her to exit, but she drove off. The brief chase ended at a park on the city’s north end, where she got out, ran to the lake, and entered the icy water.
An officer followed and pulled her to safety. Another officer was injured on icy rocks during the rescue.
The Mentor-on-the-Lake Fire Department responded with cold-water rescue gear. The woman was taken to a hospital. Charges are pending, and both officers are recovering.

🍃 Mentor’s Hidden Greenspaces Take Center Stage in Conservation Spotlight
Mentor Highlights Natural Spaces and Conservation Efforts in New Video Series
The City of Mentor is putting a spotlight on its commitment to environmental stewardship in the latest installment of its “Speaking of...” video series. While widely known for its retail and manufacturing strength, Mentor also manages more than 1,200 acres of protected greenspace—an often-overlooked asset in a rapidly developing region.
The episode focuses on how Mentor has preserved and restored its natural areas through thoughtful planning and sustained ecological work. Over time, areas once choked by invasive species have been carefully rehabilitated, leading to the resurgence of native plants, insects, and wildlife—including species that were once endangered.
Among the featured sites are Mentor Marsh, Springbrook Gardens Park, and the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. Each location has seen noticeable ecological improvements, becoming havens for biodiversity and valuable community assets for recreation and education.
These efforts are led by Mentor Natural Resources, a division of the Parks Department, which oversees maintenance and educational outreach programs designed to engage the public in conservation. The segment features Joel Throckmorton, a Natural Resource Specialist for the city, who explains how science-based practices and community partnerships are helping preserve Mentor’s natural beauty for future generations.
By investing in green infrastructure and habitat restoration, Mentor continues to balance urban growth with ecological preservation, positioning itself as a model for sustainable development in Ohio.
📰 CORRECTION: In our Dec. 10, 2025 issue (#707), we published a story titled “Mentor Fire Celebrates New Hires and Promotion in Ceremony Honoring Service.” The article incorrectly identified the name of Mentor’s Fire Chief. The correct Fire Chief is Ron Zak, who was appointed in February 2025. We regret the error.

🏈 Shedeur Sanders Shines in Week 14, Named NFL Rookie of the Week

Shedeur Sanders has earned his first major recognition of the season, being named the Pepsi Zero Sugar NFL Rookie of the Week for Week 14. The Cleveland Browns quarterback stood out among six nominees, including teammate Harold Fannin Jr., to secure the weekly honor.
In the Browns’ narrow 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Sanders completed 23 of 42 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 29 yards and scored his first career rushing touchdown.
The 364 passing yards were a personal best and tied for the third-most by a Browns rookie in a game. His three touchdown passes also tied for the second-most by a rookie in team history. He became the first Browns player to pass for over 300 yards with three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in a single game.
Since becoming the starter in Week 12, Sanders has completed 50 of 87 passes for 722 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also connected on a 50-yard or longer pass in each of his first three starts.
Through four games, he has three interceptions and has been sacked eight times. Despite this, coaches have noted clear improvement in areas like footwork and pocket presence. Head coach Kevin Stefanski praised Sanders’ dedication and growth, emphasizing that in-game experience is playing a key role in his development.

Mentor Cardinals Dominate Division I All-Ohio Football Honors
Following an undefeated 10-0 regular season, the Mentor Cardinals football team has been heavily represented on the Division I All-Ohio football team, as announced on December 8. The honors reflect a season of dominant performances on both sides of the ball for one of the state’s top programs.

Farley powered the ground game with 1,465 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, while Hodge proved a reliable deep threat, tallying 41 receptions for 815 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brede anchored the offensive line that helped the Cardinals accumulate over 4,475 total yards in the regular season.
Earning spots on the Second Team were offensive lineman Colin Pritchard, linebacker Carson Wolk, and defensive back Drew Morgan—each playing key roles in the team’s success on both fronts.
Third Team honors went to offensive lineman JoJo LoDuca, linebacker Ben Schenk, and defensive back Xayvion Dunn, rounding out a deep and talented roster that contributed to the Cardinals’ perfect regular-season run.

Does your car insurance cover what really matters?
Not all car insurance is created equal. Minimum liability coverage may keep you legal on the road, but it often won’t be enough to cover the full cost of an accident. Without proper limits, you could be left paying thousands out of pocket. The right policy ensures you and your finances are protected.
