🚧 New Sidewalk Coming to Tyler Blvd. with Help from Laketran Grant

Mentor Council Approves Tyler Boulevard Sidewalk Project

Mentor City Council has approved a $394,712.75 contract with RMH Concrete and Foundations, Inc. for the construction of a new sidewalk along the south side of Tyler Boulevard between Heisley Road and Hopkins Road. The project aims to improve pedestrian access and safety in the city’s primary manufacturing district, where workers often walk along the road shoulder due to the lack of sidewalks.

The approved bid came in well below the engineer’s estimate of $570,857 and was also lower than the highest bid submitted, which totaled $535,340. City officials confirmed the bid met all contract requirements.

Funding for the project is largely covered by a grant of more than $400,000 from Laketran, which recently expanded public transit service to the Tyler corridor. Laketran has also committed to covering any local match or unforeseen cost increases.

The project is expected to benefit employees in the area who rely on public transportation, particularly those commuting to and from jobs along Tyler Boulevard. The project is expected to begin in early 2026.

📰 Council on Aging Delivers 30,000+ Emergency Meals to Lake County Seniors

To help seniors stay nourished during winter storms, the Lake County Council on Aging distributed over 30,000 shelf-stable emergency meals across its programs.

The effort included 25,750 meals through congregate sites and home-delivered services, along with 5,150 breakfast meals for homebound seniors. These meals require no refrigeration and can be safely stored in case severe weather disrupts regular service.

Funding came from the Jerome T. Osborne and Georgeanne S. Osborne Charitable Trust, which supported the project from planning through distribution.

Additional help came from the Mentor-based Alliance for Working Together Foundation, which provided storage space to streamline delivery.

This initiative reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable seniors, especially those living alone or dependent on daily nutrition services.

Debt sucks. Getting out doesn’t have to.

Americans’ credit card debt has surpassed $1.2 trillion, and high interest rates are making it harder to catch up (yes, even if you’re making your payments). If you’re in the same boat as millions of Americans, debt relief companies could help by negotiating directly with creditors to reduce what you owe by up to 60%. Check out Money’s list of the best debt relief programs, answer a few short questions, and get your free rate today.

🏠 Reverse Mortgages May Soon Be Easier and Cheaper for Seniors

Reverse mortgages could become more affordable and accessible under proposed reforms supported by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). Designed to eliminate cost and complexity barriers, the changes aim to help seniors tap into home equity without selling their homes.

A major proposal would shift the steep upfront mortgage insurance premium—currently 2% of a home’s value—to a percentage based on the actual loan amount, making smaller loans more affordable.

Other recommendations include increasing Principal Limit Factors (PLFs) to allow access to more usable equity, giving seniors greater financial flexibility for needs like in-home care and medical expenses.

The MBA also opposes blanket rules requiring automatic Life Expectancy Set-Asides (LESAs) for taxes and insurance, suggesting they be applied only when necessary to avoid tying up funds.

To streamline the process, the group proposes faster appraisals using automated valuation models, expanded remote counseling, and better digital tools to cut down on paperwork and delays.

Lenders could also benefit from reforms that reduce financial strain, potentially improving pricing and helping stabilize the reverse mortgage market.

If adopted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the changes could take effect by 2026, making reverse mortgages more practical and user-friendly for older homeowners.

🏈 Browns Offense Stalls as Bears Dominate at Soldier Field

Browns Struggle in 31-3 Loss to Bears, Fall to 3-11 on the Season

Cleveland's offensive struggles continued in a decisive 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears on Dec. 14 at Soldier Field. The Browns managed just a field goal and committed three turnovers, dropping their 11th game of the season.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders passed for 177 yards, including long completions of 42 and 47 yards to Isaiah Bond. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. caught seven passes for 48 yards. Sanders also led the team in rushing with just 24 yards, as Cleveland's ground game remained ineffective.

Chicago capitalized on all three of Sanders’ interceptions, turning each into points. The Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and added 17 more in the third, with touchdowns from DJ Moore and D’Andre Swift sealing the blowout.

Despite the defeat, defensive end Myles Garrett continued his record-chasing season with 1.5 sacks, pushing his total to 21.5—just one short of the NFL single-season mark. He also recorded four tackles and three quarterback hits. Alex Wright added his fourth sack of the year.

Linebacker Carson Schwesinger led the team with 14 tackles, while Mohamoud Diabate and Ronnie Hickman added eight and seven, respectively. Cleveland faces the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 21.

🏀 Cavs Miss All OT Shots in Painful Loss to Short-Handed Hornets

Rookie Kon Knueppel scored 29 points as the Charlotte Hornets defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 119-111 in overtime Sunday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Knueppel, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, built on his 33-point performance Friday with another standout game. Brandon Miller contributed 25 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, and six assists, while Miles Bridges added 20 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Playing without LaMelo Ball, Collin Sexton, and Tre Mann, the Hornets improved to 3-10 on the road.

Cleveland went 0-for-10 from the field in overtime. Darius Garland led with 26 points, while Donovan Mitchell scored 17 and missed a potential game-winner at the end of regulation.

Jaylon Tyson posted 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Cavs, who have now dropped six of their last nine games. They were also missing Evan Mobley, out with a strained calf and expected to miss a month.
