❄️ Winter Storm Watch Issued for Northeast Ohio This Weekend

Winter Storm Watch Issued for Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for portions of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania, including areas along the Lake Erie shoreline, from 7 a.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Monday. The advisory was released early Friday morning as forecasters prepare for a potential round of significant lake-effect snowfall.
According to the latest forecast, snow accumulations of 6 inches or more are possible in areas where lake-effect snow bands persist. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph could cause blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility. Snowfall rates may reach up to 1 inch per hour at times, making travel hazardous during periods of heavier snow.
The watch affects several communities, including Cleveland, Mentor, Chardon, Ashtabula, and Erie, with more inland areas such as Andover, Orwell, and Meadville also under the alert.
The expected conditions could lead to slippery roads and poor visibility, especially during peak snowfall periods. Officials are urging residents to monitor forecasts closely and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the weekend.
📰 End of an Era: Kirtland Hills Mayor Jack Turben Retires After 31 Years
After 31 years as mayor, Jack Turben has retired from leading Kirtland Hills. Councilwoman Alyson Scott was sworn in as the village’s new mayor during the Dec. 15 council meeting. The transition marks the end of Turben’s 40 years in local government. Scott, president of Fredon Corporation, brings both public and private sector experience to the role. The meeting also saw several leadership changes, including the promotion of Lt. Jeff Bilicic to police captain and new appointments to council leadership positions.
📰 Lake County Agents Take Educational Approach to CBD, THC, and Kratom Laws
Lake County Narcotics Agency Focuses on Education Amid Changing Laws
As Ohio’s laws on CBD, THC, and Kratom evolve, the Lake County Narcotics Agency is prioritizing education over enforcement. Lieutenant Brad Kemp is visiting gas stations, vape shops, and convenience stores across the county, providing information to help businesses understand which products are legal to sell.
“The laws change frequently,” Kemp explained. “What’s legal in another state may not be legal here.” Many retailers, he said, trust distributors who may be selling products legally in states like Michigan or California, but not in Ohio.
The agency’s approach emphasizes cooperation. Kemp offers education as a first step and issues warnings, reserving enforcement for repeat violations. One recent challenge has been informing store owners about Ohio’s new Kratom ban, which went into effect last week. During visits to 10 stores in one day, Kemp found that two were unaware of the change.
The program began several months ago, and most businesses have complied once they’re made aware of the laws. The agency believes that building understanding leads to better long-term compliance than immediate penalties.

🏀 Fast Start Powers Mentor Girls Past Riverside in Dominant Win
Mentor Girls Dominate in Redemption Win Over Riverside
After a tough loss at Riverside last year, the Mentor girls basketball team made sure this season’s Dec. 17 rematch would end differently — and it did, in commanding fashion. With relentless defense and a fast-paced approach, the Cardinals surged to an early lead and never looked back, earning a 65-47 home victory.
Mentor stormed ahead 18-4 in the first quarter, using pressure defense and aggressive play to overwhelm Riverside. The quick start set the tone, and though Riverside settled in, the gap proved too large to overcome. The win pushes Mentor’s record to 6-1, while Riverside falls to 4-2.
Freshman Ashlyn McKinney led all scorers with 21 points, dominating in the paint and capitalizing on passes created by dribble penetration. Mentor’s scoring bursts were well-timed, particularly in the second and third quarters when Riverside tried to close the margin.
Despite some strong moments — including 3-pointers from Jordyn White and solid efforts from Rhys Shantery and Aubrey Laurenty — Riverside couldn’t match Mentor’s energy or execution. Their offense struggled to keep pace with the Cardinals’ speed and physicality.
Mentor’s coaches credited the win to a total team effort and a defensive mindset developed since offseason workouts. The team’s ability to start strong and sustain pressure made the difference.
Next, Mentor faces Shaker Heights on Friday and Solon on Tuesday before the holiday break. Riverside will take on Gilmour and Cornerstone Christian this weekend.
