Brutal Cold and Lake Effect Snow on Monday

Northeast Ohio is bracing for a blast of Arctic air to kick off the week, with Monday and Tuesday both heading for dangerously cold conditions.

Temperatures on Monday will struggle to rise above the upper teens, and a lake effect snow event is expected to develop later in the day, especially in areas near Lake Erie.

By Monday night, the Arctic front tightens its grip as temperatures plunge to around zero. On Tuesday, highs will only reach the mid-teens, but biting winds will push wind chills to a dangerous range of 10 to 15 degrees below zero.

Residents are urged to dress in warm, layered clothing if venturing outside. Pet owners should also take extra care to protect animals from the extreme cold.

⛳ Snow, Swings, and Support: Chili Open Returns to Lake County

Snowy Golf and Chili Warm Hearts at Annual Lake County Chili Open

Golfers in Lake County are preparing to brave the winter elements for a good cause. The annual Lake County Chili Open returns to Black Brook Golf Course on Saturday, January 24, 2026, offering a fun mix of outdoor activity and community support.

Participants will play nine holes of snowy golf, putting a chilly spin on the traditional summer sport. Afterward, they can warm up with a hearty bowl of chili, hot dogs, and hot chocolate served in the clubhouse.

Hosted by the City of Mentor at Black Brook Golf Course & Practice Center, the event costs just $20 per person. All proceeds benefit the United Way of Lake County, supporting local residents in need.

With limited spots still available, those interested can register by contacting the Mentor Recreation Department at 440-974-5720.

📅 Mentor City Council Meets Tuesday; Public Work Session Set for 5:30 PM

Mentor City Council to Discuss Bolton Property Ahead of Regular Meeting

Mentor City Council will meet on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the council chambers on the third floor of the Mentor Municipal Center. The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live on the Mentor Channel—available on Spectrum 1024, U-Verse 99, and the Mentor app for Roku, Apple, Android, and Amazon Fire.

A public work session will be held at 5:30 PM ahead of the meeting to discuss possible development of the Bolton property. This session is open for in-person attendance but will not be televised.

The full meeting agenda and supporting documents are available online via Google Drive for residents interested in staying informed.

 🏡 2025 Housing Market Cools as Inventory Rises and Rates Fall

The 2025 housing market saw a steady decline in mortgage rates, a rebound in home listings, and slower home price growth—factors that helped make buying more accessible. Rates ranged from 6.17% to 7.04%, significantly lower than previous years. Mortgage activity rose, especially refinances, as credit availability improved. Home prices increased only modestly nationwide, with some states seeing declines. Home sales saw slight gains, while inventory levels climbed for the 25th straight month. The market showed signs of rebalancing, setting the stage for more movement in 2026.

🏀 Rodriguez Leads Defensive Masterclass as Mentor Cruises Past St. Joe’s

The Mentor Cardinals delivered a dominant road performance Thursday, defeating St. Joe’s 59-31 with smothering defense and sharp execution.

The Jaguars opened with back-to-back threes to take a quick 6-0 lead, but Mentor responded with aggressive defense. Ashlyn McKinney and Lyla Willis disrupted the passing lanes, while Hayley McClintock applied strong on-ball pressure. That intensity sparked a 12-2 run, putting the Cardinals ahead 18-11 after one quarter.

Mentor kept the pressure on in the second. Nina Rodriguez entered and quickly took control—pushing the pace, scoring in transition, and sinking a deep three. Her composure helped extend the lead to 37-16 at halftime.

The third quarter started slow, with both teams struggling to score. Eventually, Mentor found their rhythm again, turning defense into offense. Peyton Willis stepped up with timely buckets, helping the Cardinals push the margin to 54-24 by the end of the third.

Rodriguez led the way with 19 points and set the tone on both ends. Her poise and leadership guided the Cardinals from start to finish.

With the 59-31 win, Mentor improves to 13-1 on the year. Later today they will play the Perry Pirates (10-2) at home. Tip off time is 6pm.

🏒 Mentor Falls Just Short in 3-2 Battle Against Olentangy

The Mentor Cardinals came up short in a tightly contested game against the Olentangy (Lewis Center, OH) Braves on Sunday, falling 3-2. The Braves struck early, scoring twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Mentor fought back to close the gap but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Both teams found success on the power play, with Olentangy converting one of two chances and Mentor scoring once on four opportunities.

Joe and Jake Mackey each tallied a goal for the Cardinals, while Hayden Vallance and Nick Biondolillo added assists to round out the scoring.

Goalie CJ Lobue stopped 19 of 22 shots in the loss.

The setback drops Mentor to 12-12-3. The Cardinals return to action Friday, January 23, when they visit the Rocky River Pirates (14-9-5). Puck drop is set for 5:30 p.m.
