❄️ Major Winter Storm to Dump Up to a Foot of Snow Across Ohio This Weekend

Major Winter Storm to Blanket Ohio with Heavy Snowfall Sunday

Ohio is preparing for a major winter storm expected to bring widespread snowfall across the state from late Saturday night through Sunday. Snow will arrive from the southwest and continue throughout the day, with totals ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Many areas are likely to reach the higher end of that range.

Forecasters are confident that at least 6 inches will fall statewide, with some regions, especially central and eastern Ohio, seeing up to a foot. The heaviest snow is expected Sunday afternoon and evening, with snowfall rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. Snow will taper off Sunday night but may linger into Monday morning.

Winds will blow at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. Minimal impacts from blowing snow are expected, but travel conditions will be hazardous due to the storm’s duration and intensity.

Drivers are advised to avoid travel Sunday unless necessary. Those who must head out should ensure their vehicle is fueled and stocked with essentials like blankets and emergency supplies.

Because of the long-lasting snowfall, school closures and delays are likely Monday morning.

🗽Mentor to Honor President Garfield with Statue for Nation’s 250th

Mentor to Unveil James A. Garfield Statue for America’s 250th Birthday

As the nation prepares to mark its 250th birthday, the city of Mentor is planning a tribute of its own—honoring one of its most historic residents, President James A. Garfield.

A seven-foot bronze statue of the 20th U.S. president is expected to be installed by July 4, aligning with the country’s semi-quincentennial celebration. The $150,000 project is being handled by Cooper Mill Bronzeworks Ltd., and will be funded by the city, according to council records.

The statue pays tribute to Garfield’s legacy and his ties to Mentor. In 1876, he bought his Lawnfield estate on what is now Mentor Avenue. From its front porch, he ran his 1880 presidential campaign—a first-of-its-kind “front porch campaign” that reshaped American politics.

The property is now the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, drawing visitors year-round.

Renowned sculptor Alan Cottrill will create the statue. With more than 400 large-scale pieces to his name, including statues of 19 U.S. presidents, Cottrill is best known in Ohio for his depiction of Thomas Edison, now standing in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall.

Mentor also plans a formal unveiling and community celebration to honor both Garfield’s legacy and the nation’s milestone anniversary.

📰 WENS Registration Encouraged as Snow and Freezing Temps Loom

Lake County Urges Residents to Sign Up for Emergency Alerts Before Winter Storm

With snow and bitter cold in the forecast this weekend, Lake County officials are urging residents to sign up for the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS) to stay informed during emergencies.

WENS delivers alerts via text, email, or voice about severe weather, road closures, and critical updates. Residents can choose community-specific alerts, including for the City of Mentor, during sign-up.

Registration takes under a minute and adds an extra layer of safety. Officials note that WENS supplements traditional media like TV and radio, not replaces them.

Mentor residents should be aware that voice alerts are only sent between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, so text or email options are recommended for full coverage.

WENS is managed by Inspiron Logistics for the Lake County Emergency Management Agency. Questions can be directed to [email protected] or (440) 350-5499.

📰 New Program Enhances Police Interactions with Special Needs Community

The Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department has introduced the Blue Envelope Program in collaboration with the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The initiative aims to improve communication between law enforcement, emergency responders, and individuals with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities.

Designed for situations such as traffic stops or emergencies, the program provides officers with key information to better understand and support people with invisible disabilities like autism, anxiety, or sensory sensitivities.

The Blue Envelope contains important personal documents, emergency contacts, and notes about the individual's condition. It comes with an optional window decal for vehicles and a wallet card to discreetly alert officers that someone may need additional support.

Program materials are available for free at the police department or can be requested by email. A special needs and autism registry is also available online or in person, allowing residents to provide updated information and a photo to assist police during emergencies.

This program reinforces the department’s commitment to inclusivity, aiming to ensure safer, more respectful interactions for all members of the community.

🧀 Fireplace Mac & Cheese: The Ultimate Winter Comfort Food

As temperatures drop and the air turns crisp, few things hit the spot like a bubbling pot of homemade macaroni and cheese. This version, designed for cozy nights by the fire, brings classic comfort with a rustic twist—and it’s made right in a cast-iron pot or Dutch oven over a wood or charcoal-burning fireplace, fire pit, or grill.

To elevate the dish, add layers of flavor with crispy bacon or slow-caramelized onions. A buttery panko topping, dusted with a hint of paprika, adds the perfect crunch to every bite.

🏀 Mitchell, Mobley Power Cavaliers to Tight Win Over Kings

Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points and Evan Mobley added 29 as the Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Sacramento Kings 123–118 on Friday night. Mobley also grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out seven assists in one of his best performances of the season.

Cleveland, now winners of four of its last five, improved to 16–5 against teams with losing records. After leading early with a 16–2 run, the Cavs allowed Sacramento to rally and briefly take a 114–113 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell answered with a clutch three-pointer to put Cleveland back in front, and Jaylon Tyson sealed the game with a floater in the final 30 seconds. The Kings missed three straight threes down the stretch.

Domantas Sabonis led Sacramento with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists in his return from injury. Dennis Schroeder added 21 points and DeMar DeRozan had 20.

Cleveland was again without point guard Darius Garland, out with a toe injury.

🏀 Euclid’s Early Shooting Surge Sinks Cardinals in Conference Clash

The Panthers quickly gained control and handed the Cardinals a 93-79 loss on Jan. 23. The defeat dropped Mentor to 9-4 overall.

Jack Kennedy paced the Cardinals with 29 points, attacking the rim consistently and finishing the first half with a finger-roll layup at the buzzer. He also hit a second-half three-pointer as Mentor attempted to rally.

Tony Katava added 12 points, including Mentor’s first made three after an 0-for-12 start from beyond the arc. Nate Sabin chipped in 10 points with strong interior play.

After Euclid opened the game with five straight three-pointers and built an early lead, Mentor’s press defense forced 13 first-half turnovers and helped cut the deficit to 46-39 by halftime.

Mentor had success driving to the basket but struggled from deep, finishing with eight threes total. Euclid responded early in the third with a 13-5 run, applying a press of its own that led to quick turnovers and transition points.

Katava brought energy off the bench, and Sabin’s steady scoring kept Mentor within range. However, the Cardinals couldn’t complete the comeback. Asberry’s seventh three-pointer in the final minute sealed it for Euclid.

Euclid was led by Mehki Asberry’s 29 points and seven threes. Kye Owens added 23 points and five rebounds for the Panthers, who completed a season sweep of the GCC rivalry.
