❄️ Snow Day for Mentor Students After Major Winter Storm

All schools in the Mentor area, including Mentor Public Schools, Lake Catholic High School, and Mentor Christian School, are closed today due to heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions.

The winter storm, which tapered off overnight, left behind roughly 8 inches of snow as of last night, while some areas to the south saw totals exceeding twelve inches. Although the heaviest snow has ended, roadways, driveways, and parking lots remain slick and treacherous as residents begin their Monday.

Scattered snow showers will continue throughout the day, accompanied by blustery west winds ranging from 10 to 20 miles per hour. Expect a cold, slick start to the week with temperatures stuck in the upper teens, then sliding even lower as the afternoon and evening roll in.

The bitter conditions will intensify overnight on Monday. Wind chills late Monday into Tuesday morning are expected to plunge to 10 to 20 degrees below zero, with actual air temperatures dropping near zero. Residents are advised to dress warmly and use caution when traveling.

📰 Proposed Vet Clinic, Auto Shop, and Rec Facility Up for Approval in Mentor

The City of Mentor’s Municipal Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on February 5, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Mentor Municipal Center, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.

The commission will review three conditional use permit requests for proposed developments across the city:

  1. A recreational facility is proposed at 7564 Tyler Boulevard, Unit A. The application, submitted by Solid Contact Sports & Personal Training and the property owners, seeks approval to operate in the M-1 Light Manufacturing District.

  2. A veterinary clinic is planned at 9434 Mentor Avenue. The applicant, American Veterinary Group (doing business as UrgentVet), is seeking approval to operate as a similar use to pet shops and clinics within the B-2 General Business District. The request is submitted with Albino & Smith, LLC.

  3. An automobile repair shop is proposed at 5700 Heisley Road by NEO Motors and RD Investment Properties, LLC, also within a B-2 General Business District.

These applications are being reviewed under Section 1135.03 of Mentor’s Code of Ordinances, which governs conditional uses in zoning districts. The public is encouraged to attend and provide input.

📰 A New View: 100-Foot Tower Coming to Mentor Marsh!

Big changes are coming to our local landscape! Mentor City Council recently finalized an $1.8 million contract with Great Lakes Crushing Ltd. to officially begin the Mentor Marsh Public Access Tower Project.

This ambitious project will feature a 100-foot-tall observation tower, topped with a 25-foot by 25-foot deck. Whether you are an avid birdwatcher or just enjoy a great view, this tower will offer an unprecedented perspective of our unique marsh ecosystem.

The structure will be built using galvanized and painted steel to ensure it stands the test of time against the elements. While the project saw some delays during coordination with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the path is now clear. With $450,000 in state funding already secured and voter approval in hand, construction is set to move quickly.

If all stays on schedule, the project should be completed in about nine months. We look forward to seeing the skyline change this fall as we gain a new way to appreciate the natural beauty of Lake County!

📊 Mortgage Rates Edge Up, But Remain Far Below 2025 Highs

Mortgage rates rose slightly on Friday, January 23, 2026, though they remain nearly 80 basis points lower than this time last year. This dip compared to 2025 may benefit both homebuyers and those considering refinancing, with rates still near three-year lows.

As of the writing of this article on January 23, 2026, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate stands at 6.20%. The 15-year fixed increased to 5.55%, while the 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage reached 5.50%. Some loan types saw minor shifts, though overall conditions remain relatively steady.

Market data contributed to the rate environment. A dip in 10-year Treasury yields to 4.248% and a downturn in stock indexes typically signal downward pressure on mortgage rates. However, rising oil prices and increased investor optimism counterbalanced that trend.

Economic indicators show mixed signals. The S&P Global PMI suggests 1.5% annualized GDP growth for December and January, but new business growth remains slow. Employment has stagnated amid inflation concerns, with tariffs contributing to higher costs.

Consumer sentiment rose slightly in January to 56.4, though it's still well below the 71.7 mark from a year ago. Forecasts vary: Fannie Mae expects 30-year mortgage rates to stay near 6.0% through 2026, while the Mortgage Bankers Association predicts an average of 6.4%.

With the Federal Reserve in a pre-meeting quiet period, borrowers are encouraged to assess whether current rates make now a good time to buy, refinance, or access home equity.

🏒 Cardinals Drop 4-2 Decision to Rocky River

The Mentor Cardinals’ return to the ice following a demanding trip to Columbus ended in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Rocky River on Friday night. In a contest defined by special teams and physical attrition, the Cardinals briefly held the lead in the third period before the Pirates mounted a late-game surge.

The evening began with promise as Joe Mackey secured his 26th goal of the season in the first period, assisted by Zach Ulshafer. Despite a heavy initial barrage from Rocky River, Mentor goaltender Luke Palmer maintained composure, recording nine saves in the opening frame to keep the game level.

A pivotal moment arrived in the third period when Nick Biondolillo drew an interference penalty and subsequently converted a power-play goal to give Mentor a 2-1 advantage. However, the lead was short-lived. Following a successful kill of a five-minute major penalty, the Cardinals appeared to tire under the weight of nine total penalty minutes. Rocky River took advantage, scoring two goals in a 35-second span to reclaim the lead, followed by a final power-play cushion.

The loss moves Mentor to a 12-13-3 overall record. While the Cardinals showed significant improvement from their 9-1 loss to the Pirates in December, the lack of consistency and a lingering team illness hampered their ability to close out the victory in a hostile road environment.
