☃️ Arctic Blast Brings Dangerous Cold and Subzero Wind Chills This Weekend
A surge of bitter Arctic air will dominate the weather story this weekend, bringing dangerously cold temperatures across the region.
Overnight temperatures are expected to dropped into the single digits, with a few communities slipping below zero. Gusty winds will make conditions even harsher, with wind chills early this morning feeling as cold as 10 to 20 degrees below zero.
Despite some sunshine, temperatures Saturday afternoon will struggle to recover, topping out near 11-13 degrees.
Conditions will improve only slightly on Sunday, with highs reaching around 20 degrees, though it will still feel unseasonably cold for this time of year. Additional passing snow showers are possible Sunday, particularly in areas west of Interstate 77.
🏛️ Mentor Planning Commission Approves Vet Clinic, New Businesses, and Housing Project

Mentor Municipal Planning Commission
The Mentor Planning Commission approved a wide range of development projects during its February 5, 2026 meeting, advancing new businesses, architectural upgrades, and a residential subdivision across the city.
Commissioners approved a sports training and personal fitness facility at 7564 Tyler Boulevard, offering strength coaching and youth athletic programs. An after-hours veterinary urgent care clinic was also approved at 9434 Mentor Avenue, providing evening and weekend care for dogs and cats without offering routine services or boarding.
An existing auto repair shop at 5700 Heisley Road was cleared to continue operating under conditions aimed at improving traffic safety and reducing outdoor storage. In addition, a conditional use permit was approved for golf cart, ATV, and equipment sales at 8647 Tyler Boulevard, with landscaping required by June 2026.
Architectural reviews were finalized for Krazy Bins and Goodwill along Mentor Avenue. Krazy Bins must modify a bright green facade element tied to its signage, while Goodwill received approval for a new donation canopy and exterior improvements.
The commission also recommended approval of a five-lot residential subdivision on South Cedar Road, noting improved emergency access through a new cul-de-sac. Final approval now heads to Mentor City Council.
City staff also announced that a previously approved Sheetz drive-up lane was removed from plans, a change supported by commissioners due to improved traffic circulation.

👷🏻 Groundbreaking Marks Start of 2026 Lake County YMCA Dream House in Mentor
Community leaders, YMCA officials and residents gathered Feb. 5 in Mentor for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the 2026 Lake County YMCA Dream House.
The colonial-style home, located at 9025 Jackson St., is designed to blend classic architecture with modern living. The two-story house will feature an open-concept kitchen and family room, a private second-floor primary suite, a two-car attached garage, and a walk-out basement for additional living and entertaining space. Plans also include a large second-floor outdoor deck.
The home is being built by Osborne Real Estate Service, a longtime community partner of the Lake County YMCA, led by local builder Rick Osborne.
During February, supporters can take advantage of a Groundbreaking Promotion offering bundled house and car raffle tickets at a discounted price to help raise funds for YMCA programs.
Proceeds from Dream House ticket sales will benefit YMCA initiatives including youth development, wellness programs, childcare services and financial assistance for families throughout Lake County.

🏀 Mentor’s Press Powers 85-69 Win Over Cleveland Heights
Mentor’s full-court pressure fueled an early surge Friday night, lifting the Cardinals to an 85-69 Greater Cleveland Conference win over visiting Cleveland Heights on Feb. 6.
Mentor forced 11 turnovers in the first quarter to build a 24-15 lead, then extended the margin to 48-31 at halftime following a decisive second-quarter run.
Sophomore Jack Kennedy led all scorers with 26 points and nearly posted a triple-double with nine assists and nine steals. Senior Tony Katava added 23 points on efficient shooting.
Cleveland Heights tightened its play in the second half, outscoring Mentor 38-37 and cutting the deficit to 11 points, but the early gap was too large to overcome.
Mentor steadied the game behind continued offensive pressure, with Kennedy scoring nine second-half points and Katava adding 13 after halftime.
Sophomore Tommy Pavicic finished with 13 points for Mentor, while Jamell Stephens led Cleveland Heights with 25. Mentor improved to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the GCC, while the Tigers fell to 9-8 and 4-6.
🏒 Mentor’s Baron Cup Title Defense Ends With Semifinal Loss to Rocky River
Mentor’s attempt to defend its Baron Cup I title ended Friday night with a 3-1 semifinal loss to Rocky River at John M. Coyne Recreation Center in Brooklyn.
Rocky River advanced to the Baron Cup I championship game and will face No. 4 Hudson on Feb. 7 after Hudson upset top-seeded Amherst in the other semifinal.
Shot volume proved to be the difference in the fifth meeting between the teams this season, as the Pirates outshot the Cardinals 38-15. Mentor goaltender Luke Palmer made 35 saves, but sustained pressure kept the Cardinals largely in their own zone.
The game was scoreless after the first period despite Rocky River holding a 14-3 edge in shots. The Pirates broke through in the second period with two goals late in the frame to take a 2-0 lead.
Mentor answered just before intermission to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Rocky River restored a two-goal cushion with an insurance goal midway through the third period.
The Cardinals were unable to generate enough offense to rally and now turn their attention to the upcoming state tournament.
