❄️ Wintry Pattern Brings Accumulating Snow Through Monday
A return to winter weather is expected across Northeast Ohio, with accumulating snow likely from Sunday through Monday.
We’ll start our Saturday in the upper 20’s to low 30’s and under mostly cloudy skies, with winds easing to 10 to 15 mph.
Saturday will be dry but overcast, with highs in the mid-30s. Snow showers are expected to develop late Saturday night and continue into Sunday. Daytime temperatures near freezing may limit early accumulation, but colder air arriving after sunset will allow snow to stick more efficiently.
Snow showers will persist into Monday and could impact the morning commute, especially if heavier bands or squalls develop. It will be windy, with gusts up to 40 mph and temperatures holding near 30 degrees. Most areas are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow by late Monday, with 3 to 6 inches possible in the snow belt.
📰 Asphalt and Concrete Projects Target Dozens of Mentor Streets
The City of Mentor is planning a major 2026 road improvement season, combining asphalt resurfacing and concrete pavement repairs across Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake.
Bids for both programs will be accepted until March 6, 2026, at the Mentor Municipal Center. The asphalt program carries a base estimate of $1,260,000, while the concrete repair program is estimated at $2,300,000. Both include alternate bid options.
Asphalt resurfacing will involve milling and replacing 1.5 inches of pavement, along with base and limited curb repairs. Streets scheduled for resurfacing include Perkins Drive, Carole Drive, Welland Drive, Sylvia Drive, Stamford Avenue, Argee Drive, Westmoor Road and Brentwood Road. Carole Drive will also see three inlet basins reconstructed.
Concrete repairs will focus on full-depth slab removal and replacement on Hudson Avenue, Kellogg Creek Drive, Brayes Manor Drive, Civic Center Boulevard, Ridgeway Drive, Palmerston Drive, Silvermound Drive, Malibar Court, Gatewood Drive, Rosemary Lane and Mallard Court. Additional locations in Mentor-on-the-Lake and Winthrop Court may be added.
Work is scheduled for completion in late August 2026. City officials say the combined investment of more than $3.5 million underscores Mentor’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe and reliable roadways.

📰 Mentor Designates ‘Benjamin Blish Day’ to Begin America250 Tribute
Earlier this week, Mentor Local Buzz reported during City Council coverage that Mentor planned to honor Revolutionary War veterans as part of the America250 celebration. The city has now officially designated Feb. 22 as “Benjamin Blish Day.”
Blish, born Feb. 22, 1753, in Connecticut, served as a private during multiple enlistments. In 1805, he and his wife, Phebe, traveled with their eight children from Massachusetts to Ohio, enduring a difficult journey before settling in Mentor Township. He died in 1825 and is buried in Blish Cemetery in Painesville.
He is one of seven Revolutionary War veterans who later made their homes in Mentor. The others are Garritt Brass, Roger Craine, Israel Fox, John Reynolds, Jacob Tyler and Ebenezer Wilson. Most are interred at Mentor Municipal Cemetery, with memorial markers placed for several of them in 1959 by local historian Jack Daniels.
The city plans to recognize each veteran with a dedicated day, install a memorial along the promenade on Veterans Day and feature them on Hometown Heroes banners.

🏀 Cavs Stay Hot as Donovan Mitchell Drops 32 in 118-113 Victory
Cavaliers Stretch Streak to Seven with Win Over Hornets
The Cleveland Cavaliers extended their winning streak to seven Friday night, holding off the Charlotte Hornets 118-113 for their 12th victory in 13 games.
Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, and sealed the win with a late jumper and four free throws, finishing 12 of 13 from the line.
Jared Allen added 25 points and 14 rebounds, and James Harden contributed 18 points and eight assists as Cleveland dominated the paint 50-28.
Rookie Kon Knueppel led Charlotte with 33 points and seven 3-pointers, giving him 193 this season — second-most ever by an NBA rookie. His shooting helped the Hornets erase a 14-point deficit and briefly take the lead in the third quarter.
LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller each scored 18 points, while Ryan Kalkbrenner had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Miller’s late three-point play cut the lead to four, but Cleveland closed it out.
Charlotte, missing three forwards due to suspension and injury management, has lost three of four after a nine-game surge before the break.

🏀 Bees Control Boards, Hold Off Mentor Rally for Key GCC Win
Medina seized control with a 23-point second quarter and held off Mentor for a 68-63 victory on Feb. 20. Both teams are now 14-7 overall and finished tied for third in the Greater Cleveland Conference at 8-6.
Despite missing 6-foot-11 senior Lucas Hogan, the Bees used their size to control the boards and limit Mentor’s transition game.
Junior guard Beckett Miller led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 6 of 8 from three-point range and all four free throws. Senior Brody Kopkas added 15 points as all eight Medina players scored.
After a tight first quarter, Medina built a 37-28 halftime lead behind Miller’s shooting. Mentor battled back to tie the game at 41-41 with 2:50 left in the third quarter behind 6-foot-7 senior Tony Katava, who was scoreless in the first half but finished with 17 points, including 11 in the third.
Medina answered with timely three-pointers and key stops to close it out.
Katava led the Cardinals with 17 points, while Jack Kennedy and Bernard Gnjatic each added 12. Mentor shot 45 percent from the field (23 of 51), went 7 of 23 from three-point range and 10 of 11 at the free-throw line.
Medina closes the regular season at Highland on Feb. 27, while Mentor travels to Lakewood on Feb. 23 as both await tournament seeding.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on Feb. 14, which coincides with which ancient Roman festival?
