🌿 Spring Into Health: Simple Ways to Safely Detox Your Body This Season

It is still winter, but spring is right around the corner, which means it is time for some Spring cleaning. But that isn’t something we should only do to our homes. We live in our bodies, and they deserved to be “cleaned” as well.

A detox or a cleanse of your body may conjure up images of a strict liquid diet of green smoothies for a week or fasting for several days, but those extreme measures are not necessary and may cause more harm than good. Instead, try eliminating one thing that is no longer serving your body; caffeine, sugar, alcohol or sodas are a great place to start. A week without sugary sweets can help clear brain fog and reduce inflammation. Try to remove something else from your diet every one to two weeks and by the time summer rolls around, your body will thank you.

A great way to not only detox but to jump start your metabolism is to drink a cup of warm water with lemon first thing in the morning. (don’t skimp on the lemon; use at least the juice from one half). Try this daily for a week or two and take heed of how you feel each day.

There are so many health benefits to drinking water, but for the sake of detoxing, abundant hydration is needed for the liver to function properly. The liver is the primary filtration system of your body. It converts toxins into waste products, cleanses blood, and metabolizes nutrients. If you want something with a little more flavor than water, try teas that have the added benefit of encouraging bowel movement as warm liquid can stimulate the GI tract. Some flavors to try: dandelion, milk thistle, lemongrass or fennel.

For food that is cleansing, load up on dark, leafy green vegetables like endive, kale, arugula, parsley, spinach and mustard greens. In addition to other health benefits of leafy greens, the chlorophyll they contain can help remove heavy metals and toxins in your blood. Chlorophyll also supports your liver’s natural ability to detox itself by helping to keep that organ clean.

Over the counter medications can be toxic when used in large amounts or too frequently. These pass through the liver and can cause long-term damage to this vital organ. And not to harp on the water issue again, but did you know that swallowing pills without water can be dangerous? If they get stuck somewhere on their journey, they can break down and erode delicate tissue in the esophagus. It is best to take each pill with 8 ounces of water and never before lying down.

And as far as that deep clean for your house this spring…when you rid your living space of dust, mold, dander and other allergens, then you are helping keep your body clean as well. Check the label on your cleaning products. Strive to use ones with more natural ingredients (or make your own with baking soda, essential oils, vinegar and lemons). Inhaling the chemicals in most cleaning products is bad for your lungs and can even lead to headaches.

By the time you get your house AND your body in order this spring, it will hopefully be nice enough outside to go enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, which is something else your body needs!

🏀 Cavaliers Surge Past Knicks with Dominant Second-Half

The Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away in the second half to defeat the New York Knicks 109-94 on Tuesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 23 points, James Harden added 20, and Jarrett Allen posted 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers won for the eighth time in nine games.

New York struggled offensively despite 20 points from Jalen Brunson and 18 from Mikal Bridges. The Knicks shot 35-of-86 from the field and just 27% from three-point range, with Brunson and Bridges combining to shoot 12-of-36. Mitchell Robinson grabbed 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to offset the team’s cold shooting.

Cleveland led 60-54 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter, outscoring New York 23-11 and holding the Knicks to just three field goals in the period. A 13-2 run stretching into the fourth quarter extended the lead to 20 points, putting the game out of reach. Cleveland heads to Milwaukee on Wednesday to begin a three-game road trip.

🏀 Mentor’s Boys Comeback Falls Just Short Against Lakewood

Lakewood’s varsity basketball team earned a 61-58 home victory over Mentor on Monday in non-conference play. This was a “Play-in Game” to determine the playoff bracket.

Mentor held a 16-14 lead after the first quarter, but Lakewood took control in the second, outscoring the Cardinals 24-10 to build a 38-26 halftime advantage. The strong second period proved decisive.

Mentor rallied in the second half, using a 19-10 run to cut the deficit to three points and make it a tight finish. Lakewood, however, stayed composed in the closing minutes to secure the win.

Bernard Gnjatic led Mentor with 11 points and three steals. Jack Kennedy added eight points, six rebounds, nine assists and three steals, while Tommy Pavicic contributed seven points and five steals.

Mentor drops to 14-8 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Cardinals will host Lorain on February 27 at 7 p.m.

🏈 Mentor Graduate Fred Hale Joins Philadelphia Eagles Staff

Fred Hale, a 2007 Mentor High School graduate, is continuing his rise in the football world with a move to the NFL.

After five seasons with the University of Notre Dame, Hale is leaving the Fighting Irish to join the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff. He was promoted to associate director of strength and conditioning in 2023 and played a key role in player development during Notre Dame’s resurgence under head coach Marcus Freeman, including a national championship game appearance in 2024.

Before Notre Dame, Hale spent four years as co-director of sports performance at Eastern Michigan University.

Following the 2025 college football season, Hale is reportedly headed to the NFL. The Eagles are bringing the former Notre Dame strength and conditioning assistant onto their staff in a similar role, according to a report shared on social media by The Eagles Times, which described him as another offseason addition to the team.
