📰 Community Basketball Tradition Returns as Broadmoor Bobcats Face Local Coaches

The Broadmoor School Bobcats are preparing for one of their most anticipated events of the year — their annual basketball game against local high school coaches and players on March 16.

The Bobcats, a team made up of students with a variety of developmental disabilities, have been bringing energy and excitement to the court for more than 30 years. The program has become a beloved tradition in Lake County, highlighting inclusion, teamwork, and the joy of sports.

During the season, the Bobcats play about 15 games against teams such as Riverside, Eastlake North, Madison, and Perry High Schools. They also face unique opponents including Lake Erie College’s Education Department and the Mentor Fire Department.

This year’s special event will be held at Lake Catholic High School. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with tipoff at 7 p.m. The free, family-friendly evening will feature entertainment, activities, a bake sale, and a 50/50 raffle.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Luke Farrell is expected to take part in the game. Farrell has supported awareness efforts for developmental disabilities for several years after visiting Broadmoor School earlier in his career.

The event takes place during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, offering the community an opportunity to come together and support Broadmoor students.

🚧 Sinkhole Forces Lane Closure on SR 2 Westbound Ramp in Wickliffe

Yesterday in Wickliffe brought some unwanted excitement. In addition to all the crazy weather, we had a sinkhole in the area.

Traffic disruptions are affecting drivers in Wickliffe after a sinkhole developed on a highway entrance ramp Saturday. Authorities report that State Route 2 westbound has been reduced to a single lane at the Lloyd Road entrance ramp while crews assess the situation.

The roadway issue was identified earlier in the day, prompting officials to limit traffic in the area for safety. Engineers from the Lake County Engineer’s Office are traveling to the scene to evaluate the damage and determine what repairs may be needed.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area if possible and expect traffic delays as vehicles merge into the remaining open lane. Local officials are monitoring the situation and will provide updates once the extent of the damage is confirmed.

📉 Lake County Sees Third Small Earthquake in Recent Months

Is this the new normal? A small earthquake was recorded in Lake County early Friday morning, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The seismic event measured 2.2 in magnitude and occurred at approximately 7:24 a.m. Eastern Time. Monitoring systems located the quake about 4.5 miles south of Madison Township, near the intersection of Dewey and Moseley roads.

While earthquakes of this size are typically minor and often go unnoticed by residents, the event adds to a recent pattern of seismic activity in the area. About a week earlier, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was detected roughly two and a half miles southwest of Madison.

Another tremor measuring 2.7 magnitude was recorded roughly two months ago east of North Madison, indicating several small quakes have occurred in the region in recent months.

The Mentor Christian Lady Crusaders saw their postseason run come to an end Friday afternoon with a 52–20 loss to Ohio Valley Christian in the OCSAA girls basketball semifinal.

Mentor Christian faced a tough challenge against a strong Ohio Valley Christian squad that controlled the game from early on. Despite the Lady Crusaders’ efforts on both ends of the court, the Lady Defenders steadily built their lead throughout the contest and maintained control of the matchup.

Ohio Valley Christian was led offensively by Remee Cremeens, who scored 17 points. Abigail Oliver, Abigail Heffernan, and Ava Sneed each added seven points to help push the Lady Defenders to the semifinal victory.

The loss ends Mentor Christian’s tournament run, while Ohio Valley Christian advances to the OCSAA championship game.

⚾ Guardians’ Slade Cecconi Adds Cutter as Key Weapon This Spring

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Slade Cecconi is expanding his pitching arsenal this spring by adding a cutter, a pitch that has quickly become an important part of his approach on the mound.

Cecconi showed the effectiveness of the pitch during a Cactus League appearance Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers, throwing four scoreless innings and recording six strikeouts.

The right-hander now features a six-pitch mix that includes a four-seam fastball, slider, curveball, sinker, changeup, and cutter. After using the cutter sparingly last season—less than three percent of the time—he has begun relying on it more during spring training.

Opponents hit just .200 against Cecconi’s cutter last year, making it one of his most effective pitches. As a result, he plans to phase out his changeup and feature the cutter more often against both right-handed and left-handed hitters.

Cecconi made 23 starts for Cleveland in 2025, finishing with a 7–7 record and a 4.30 ERA. The Guardians acquired him from Arizona in December 2024 in a trade that sent first baseman Josh Naylor to the Diamondbacks.

He is expected to play a key role in Cleveland’s rotation and could start the third or fourth game of the regular season against the Seattle Mariners. The first regular season game for Cleveland is March 26 at Seattle.
