🛣️ Mentor, Neighbors Oppose State Proposal to Offload Highway Maintenance Costs

Mentor and several neighboring Lake County cities are formally protesting a plan that would significantly increase their financial responsibility for State Route 2 maintenance. Current proposals shift a larger share of upkeep costs for the state highway onto local municipalities, a move Wickliffe Mayor Joe Sakacs and leaders from Eastlake, Willowick, Willoughby, and Mentor argue is unsustainable for local budgets. These officials contend that because SR 2 serves as a regional artery rather than a local street, the state should retain the primary burden for its repair and long-term infrastructure needs.

The financial impact on Mentor and its neighbors would be substantial, potentially diverting millions of dollars from local residential road programs and essential services. City leaders are currently coordinating their opposition to ensure local tax dollars remain focused on community-specific needs rather than state-owned transit corridors. Residents can expect further updates as city councils across the region vote on formal resolutions to block the funding shift. This decision will ultimately determine how much of your local tax revenue stays within city limits versus being absorbed by state highway projects.

📰 Mentor Channel Missing on Spectrum? Here’s Where to Find It Now

Mentor residents upgrading to new Spectrum digital equipment, including Xumo streaming devices and the Spectrum app, may notice the Mentor Channel is missing from its traditional lineup position. This disappearance is not a service cancellation but a change in how Spectrum categorizes local public, educational, and government access channels on its newer digital platforms.

To restore access, users must manually search for the channel rather than scrolling through the standard guide. On Xumo devices and the Spectrum app, use the search function and type "Mentor" to locate the live stream. If you use a physical digital set-top box, the Mentor Channel is located on Channel 1024.

The City of Mentor continues to provide all programming, including City Council meetings and community events, through these digital outlets despite the navigation changes. Residents who prefer streaming outside of the cable interface can still find all content on the city’s official website and YouTube channel. If you experience technical issues beyond finding the channel, contact Spectrum customer service to ensure your new equipment is properly provisioned for local access.

📰 Grant Fuels New Push to Restore Mentor Marsh and Protect Lake Erie

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission has awarded a Lake Erie Community Grant to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to accelerate restoration efforts at the Mentor Marsh. This funding targets the continued recovery of one of Northeast Ohio’s most significant ecological landmarks, ensuring the marsh remains a functional filter for Lake Erie and a sanctuary for native wildlife.

The Museum will use the funds to manage invasive species and promote the growth of native vegetation across the sprawling wetland. These efforts directly impact Mentor residents by improving local water quality and preserving the natural beauty of the region’s largest river-marsh system.

Restoration at the marsh has already significantly reduced the risk of catastrophic marsh fires by removing dry, invasive phragmites. This new investment builds on that progress, securing the site’s status as a National Natural Landmark. Residents can expect to see ongoing field work as crews continue the multi-year process of returning the marsh to its diverse, prehistoric state.

🍽️ Dinner Rescue: 2 Easy Meals Your Family Will Love Tonight

Dinner Rescue: What’s for Dinner Tonight?

If you’re looking to break out of the same old dinner routine without spending a ton of time or money, this week’s Dinner Rescue has you covered. These two meals are quick, flavorful, and budget-friendly, making them perfect for busy families right here in Mentor.

Both recipes use simple ingredients you can grab at any local grocery store—and they come together fast, which is exactly what weeknights call for.

🌮 BBQ Chicken Quesadillas

Using rotisserie chicken makes this meal even faster, and you can customize it with onions, peppers, or a side of sour cream and salsa.

🍝 One-Pot Cheesy Sausage Pasta

If you love hearty comfort food but don’t want a pile of dishes, this one’s for you. Everything cooks in a single pot—pasta, sausage, tomatoes, and cheese—creating a rich, creamy meal with minimal cleanup.

It’s filling, affordable, and packed with flavor. Plus, it reheats well, making it perfect for leftovers the next day.

⚾ DeLauter Homers, But Cleveland Falls Short Against Seattle

The Cleveland Guardians fell 5-1 to the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, as their offense struggled to build on an early spark and secure back-to-back wins to open the season.

Rookie Chase DeLauter provided a bright spot, launching a first-inning home run to continue his impressive debut stretch. Despite the early momentum, Cleveland was unable to generate further offense against Seattle starter George Kirby, who limited the lineup over six innings.

The game shifted in the fourth inning when Seattle took control with a three-run homer, putting the Guardians behind. A later two-run shot extended the gap and put the game out of reach.

Cleveland had a key opportunity in the middle innings after loading the bases, but a play at the plate cut the rally short and preserved Seattle’s lead.

With the loss, the Guardians were unable to carry over their opening win in the series, as the offense stalled after DeLauter’s early highlight.

🥍 Lake Catholic Opens at Home with Commanding 7-2 Win Over Cathedral Prep

The Lake Catholic Lady Cougars turned in a strong all-around performance Friday, defeating Cardinal Mooney 19-12 to improve their record to 2-1 on the season.

Gibbons also made a major impact defensively, collecting seven ground balls and forcing two turnovers. Maddie Cox contributed with six ground balls and a caused turnover, helping the Cougars control possession throughout the game.

In draw controls, Gibbons secured five while Gianna Ducsay added four, giving Lake Catholic an edge in key transitions.

Lake Catholic will look to build on the win as they return home today to face Chardon (1-1), with the game scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start.

🏀 Cleveland Dominates Miami as Strus, Mobley Lead Offensive Surge

Max Strus scored 29 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a commanding 149-128 win over the Miami Heat, as Cleveland delivered one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season.

Strus fueled the early surge with a barrage of three-pointers, helping the Cavaliers build a massive first-half lead and seize full control of the game. The team’s scoring output matched a franchise record for points in regulation.

Evan Mobley added 23 points, while Jarrett Allen returned from injury with 18, providing a strong presence on both ends. James Harden contributed 17 points and 14 assists in a steady all-around performance, though Donovan Mitchell struggled to find his rhythm.

Miami attempted to rally after falling far behind, briefly cutting into the deficit in the third quarter. However, Cleveland quickly regained momentum and carried a comfortable lead into the final period.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. led the Heat with 20 points, and Bam Adebayo recorded a double-double. The loss pushed Miami down the Eastern Conference standings, while Cleveland bounced back emphatically from its earlier defeat.
