🦌 How Parma’s Deer Program Could Shape Mentor’s New Management Plan

Mentor and Parma officials are sharing their urban deer management expertise with Medina to help the city refine its culling operations. During a recent meeting of the Medina Special Legislation Committee, Parma Police Captain Kevin Riley and Mentor representatives detailed the logistics of successful municipal programs. Mentor has long utilized controlled culling to manage its deer population, focusing on public safety and the reduction of vehicle-deer collisions.

Parama’s program currently utilizes infrared and thermal technology to identify deer in densely populated areas, a method Mentor officials also monitor for efficiency. Both cities emphasized that professional sharpshooting is safer and more effective than recreational hunting in suburban environments. This inter-city collaboration aims to standardize protocols for baiting, site selection, and meat donation to local food banks.

Officials confirmed that clear communication with residents and strict police oversight are the most critical components of a successful program. Mentor continues to prioritize data-driven culling to protect local landscaping and residents. Looking ahead, the shared data will help all three cities adjust cull counts for the upcoming winter season. Source: medina-gazette.com

🦅 Why Ohio Becomes a Bird Migration Superhighway Every Spring

Millions of migratory birds are passing through Ohio, making Mentor Marsh a prime destination for wildlife observation. This seasonal movement follows the Lake Erie shoreline, where wetlands provide critical resting and feeding areas before birds cross the water. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is hosting a Spring Bird Walk at Mentor Marsh to help residents identify and appreciate these visitors.

Participants may see warblers, waterfowl, and raptors heading to northern nesting grounds. The guided walks welcome all experience levels, offering expert insight into why the marsh is a key link in the continental flyway and a measure of environmental health.

Understanding migration patterns underscores the importance of local conservation. Residents are encouraged to bring binoculars and dress for the terrain to make the most of this peak viewing period.

📰 Mentor Designates March 29 as Garrit Brass Day to Honor Revolutionary War Veteran

Mentor City Council has officially designated March 29, 2026, as “Garrit Brass Day” to honor the Revolutionary War veterans who settled in the city. This local recognition aligns with the America250 celebration, marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. Garrit Brass, born in New York, eventually made his home in Mentor and remains one of the few identified patriots interred within city limits.

The proclamation highlights the city’s commitment to preserving local history and connecting current residents with the figures who shaped the community's early foundation. By focusing on Brass, the city provides a personal face to the broad historical narrative of the American Revolution.

Residents should expect additional historical programming and community events as Mentor approaches this milestone date in 2026. This designation serves as the first major step in a broader local effort to participate in the national semiquincentennial festivities. Keep an eye on the city calendar for upcoming opportunities to engage with Mentor’s colonial heritage.

📊 Spring Housing Trends Signal Opportunity for Buyers

The housing market is showing signs of a shift as we head into spring—and it could impact buyers and sellers right here in Mentor.

Across the U.S., home prices are starting to flatten (realtor.com), with some areas even seeing slight declines. At the same time, inventory is slowly increasing (realtor.com), giving buyers more options and reducing the intense competition we’ve seen over the past few years. Homes are also taking longer to sell, signaling a more patient, less rushed market.

Experts are calling the current market “fragile but stabilizing.” In simple terms, we’re moving away from a strong seller’s market toward something more balanced—and in some cases, even slightly favoring buyers.

That said, affordability remains a challenge. Mortgage rates are still elevated, which continues to limit how much buyers can spend. And while national trends are shifting, real estate remains highly local—meaning Northeast Ohio may not see the same swings as hotter markets.

Bottom line: Buyers may have more negotiating power this spring, while sellers need to price strategically to stay competitive.

⚾ Guardians Held to Two Hits in Loss to Mariners

The Cleveland Guardians were shut out 8-0 by the Seattle Mariners, managing just two hits in a quiet offensive performance.

Seattle’s Emerson Hancock kept Cleveland off balance, throwing six hitless innings with nine strikeouts. The Guardians didn’t record their first hit until the seventh inning and were unable to generate any scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi struggled against a steady Mariners lineup that produced runs across multiple innings, including a three-run home run by Brendan Donovan that broke the game open. The loss leaves the Guardians searching for offensive rhythm as they move on to Los Angeles for their next series.
