👧🏻 Lake County Declares April Child Abuse Prevention Month

Lake County commissioners have unanimously approved a resolution designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, joining a national effort focused on awareness and prevention.

The observance underscores the importance of community involvement in protecting children and supporting families, as abuse and neglect affect all backgrounds. Over the past year, the county’s Department of Jobs and Family Services responded to nearly 1,500 child safety calls and assisted about 1,000 children facing complex challenges. In situations where homes were unsafe, 118 children were placed with foster families, relatives or other caregivers.

County leaders emphasized the need for prevention through strong families and connected communities. To promote awareness, JFS is working with local municipalities, distributing blue ribbons and wristbands, and participating in initiatives such as “Wear Blue to Work Day” and pinwheel displays in Painesville.

The agency also offers training for educators and other professionals on recognizing and reporting suspected abuse. Residents are encouraged to report concerns through the county’s 24-hour child abuse hotline.

🎤 Mentor Plans Tech Upgrade to Make City Council Meetings Easier to Follow

Mentor is preparing to upgrade how residents see and hear their local government in action. City officials have opened the bidding process for a project that will modernize the audio and video systems inside City Council Chambers at the Mentor Municipal Center.

The plan centers on improving the technology used during council meetings—everything from microphones and speakers to video recording and broadcasting capabilities. Contractors have until late April to submit proposals, after which the city will review bids and move forward with selecting a company to handle the work.

While it may sound like a behind-the-scenes upgrade, the impact is squarely aimed at the public. The new system is expected to make meetings easier to follow both in person and remotely, improving sound clarity, visibility, and overall access for residents who want to stay informed about decisions affecting their community.

As local governments continue to adapt to hybrid and digital engagement, Mentor is taking steps to ensure its public meetings are more accessible, transparent, and user-friendly.

Here’s an un-boring way to invest that billionaires have quietly leveraged for decades

If you have enough money that you think about buckets for your capital…

Ever invest in something you know will have low returns—just for the sake of diversifying?

CDs… Bonds… REITs…  :(

Sure, these “boring” investments have some merits. But you probably overlooked one historically exclusive asset class:

It’s been famously leveraged by billionaires like Bezos and Gates, but just never been widely accessible until now.

It’s had attractive growth and hasn’t tended to move in line with other markets from 1995 to 2025.

It’s not private equity or real estate. Surprisingly, it’s postwar and contemporary art.

And since 2019, over 70,000 people have started investing in SHARES of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso through a platform called Masterworks.

  • 28 exits to date

  • $1,275,000,000+ invested

  • Annualized net returns like 14.6%, 17.8%, and 17.8%

🏠 Hidden Water Risks Around Your Home Could Lead to Costly Repairs

Mentor and much of Lake County have soils that often include fine-textured, moisture-retaining layers that can lead to basement seepage and hydrostatic pressure. Local drainage conditions frequently allow water to collect near foundations, where it presses against concrete blocks and can eventually force its way through tiny cracks.

A flooded basement in Lake County costs an average of $4,000 to $7,000 for basic remediation, but the structural risks are more significant. When soil stays saturated, it expands and contracts, which may lead to foundation bowing or permanent wall displacement. Protecting your foundation is a practical necessity for maintaining property value in the Northeast Ohio real estate market.

Standard prevention advice is the most effective way to manage these soil conditions. Homeowners should install ten-foot rigid downspout extensions to move water completely past the "disturbed soil" zone immediately surrounding the house; standard three-foot splash blocks are typically insufficient. Additionally, check that the soil grade within five feet of the home drops at least six inches in height. A simple string level can help confirm if flower beds have settled into a "negative grade" that directs snowmelt toward the basement.

Taking these steps during late winter allows you to identify drainage flaws before the ground becomes fully saturated. Keeping gutters clear, extending downspouts well away from the house, and ensuring the grade slopes away from the foundation prevents the structural fatigue caused by repeated moisture cycles. Managing water flow remains the best strategy for handling the regional soil landscape.

⚾ Cleveland Takes Advantage of Sloppy Cardinals in 9-3 Win

The Guardians snapped a five-game skid against the Cardinals with a 9-3 victory Monday night at Busch Stadium, using timely hitting and taking advantage of St. Louis mistakes.

Angel Martínez set the tone early with a first-inning home run, and Cleveland took control in the fourth. Walks, smart baserunning, and a pair of singles turned into a three-run inning and a lead they never gave up.

Brayan Rocchio added a key two-run homer in the sixth to stretch the margin, while the offense stayed consistent and forced additional errors late.

Cleveland’s balanced approach—mixing power with situational hitting—kept pressure on throughout, especially as the Cardinals struggled defensively in key moments.

Despite a home run from Jordan Walker, the Guardians’ execution proved the difference. Gavin Williams pitched a solid 5 innings to get his second win of the season.
